Funny you should say that Mel, I used to have a lot of problems insuring my car when I described my occupation they didn't know what to put down until someone found it under laundry worker. So maybe that would be my occupation on the census if there was such a thing in 1860

Afternoon All,

That's a nice pic of the little Squirrel Fiona. They seem to be out and about a lot this winter.

Frank, they say a nasty cold bug is about at the moment that causes upset tummies too so it looks like it may be what you and Ros have. Can last a fortnight which is a long time to be feeling ropey. I hope you both soon feel better, but don't try to do much till then. I noticed when I was out this morning that there seemed to be a lot of people with tissues and snuffles. I just asked OH how many times a week he goes to footie and he said once!!! :-0 I gave him an old fashioned look as today is the 3rd time this week!! Selective amnesia methinks! :-S

Oh Mandy I feel so sorry for your son. Mine was agony just in 1 toe, so what it must be like to have your feet swelling like that I can only imagine. It must be awful for him trying to sleep and keeping the little ones from banging into them. Looser socks sound good.

Maureen you have set me off again.....I think it's the 'getting going' with me too....I want to (try) to do a bigger one next and have an idea of what I want to do but I think it is the 'bigger' aspect that has been holding me back!! As you say, there is always the white paint if things go a bit wrong!! :-) and the bin if they go very wrong!! :-D lol. :-0

Mel, the Civil Service Commission was set up in 1855 so I would probably have been called a Civil Servant just the same only working in a different department...........on second thoughts they probably wouldn't accept women then!! Even after WW2 if a woman wanted to continue working in the Civil Service after she got married she had to get WRITTEN PERMISSION from her husband!!!

More paperwork now and then jewellery to finish for friday's class. BBL

Maureen Report 26 Feb 2013 16:24

Equal rights has certainly done a lot for women, can't imagine having to get permission from a husband, we have a lot to thank those suffragettes for.
Get those paints out Ann, it's surprising how quickly you can fill a blank space :-D

Frank may have been Coach Salesman?? or Letter Carrier?

David what would yours be please?

Jane could be Sick Nurse or Nannie.

Pat ?????????????????

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 26 Feb 2013 17:09

Chicken curry for us tonight and I am cheating as I bought a tin of curry sauce to try. Same make as I use for the Chilli.

Maureen

Maureen Report 26 Feb 2013 17:26

Oh well, I guess that's a step up from scullery maid Mel :-0

Jane

Jane Report 26 Feb 2013 17:28

If Chris told me he wouldn't give me permission for something,I'd tell him to take a hike lol.
I assume my Occupation on a Census in 1860 would be Nurse.I have never thought about that.

My eyes are all tested and new specs ordered. My pressures are slightly raised (as before) so yearly checks from now on rather than every 2 years.I have chosen my frames and am going to try Varifocals .It was buy one get one free. The second pair I will have as sunglasses, but haven't picked the frame for those yet.I will make sure I can get on with varifocals first.I think she said 30 days trial.Just had to pay half the price today and the other half when I collect on the 14th.So just under £300 :-| :-| I have 'Dry Eye'in my left eye and must get some drops. You wouldn't think it is dry as it runs all the time lol.I have a tissue at hand all the time to mop up.I hate it.

Maureen I have been twice to Venice.I think I have been since being on the thread.I just love Italy, but especially Venice.

Sorry your colds are not much better Frank. It's going to be a long one isn't it :-S
Chicken Casserole cooking nicely now.I have done so much ,and now I have a feeling Chris said he is out to eat tonight :-S :-S

No call from the Garage :-S..He said he would ring today :-| :-|

Frank

Frank Report 26 Feb 2013 17:45

Evening, Just popped in for a mo.

Ros made a big saucepan (her Mums old pot) of stew this morning, it's been simmering for 4 hours now. It will be nice for our throats, rather than have to do a lot of chewing and swallowing.

Yes Mel, I suppose a Car sales Manager, wouldn't have been around then, but I thought a Postmaster might have been.

Not a dry eye in the place then Jane. !!! You must get Chris to stop hitting you. LOL LO

Today as with yesterday, we both have an eye that keeps leaking, my right her left. Tissues at the ready all the time.

Going to have a bowl of stew. so BBL

LilyL Report 26 Feb 2013 18:05

'PERMISSION'(!) from OH?, you would have to be joking. Like you Jane, any attempt at that and he would be told in no uncertain terms to take a hike! Luckily neither of us tells the other what they can or can't do. We do offer each other advice at times,(which we may or maynot take!) which is fair enough, but at the end of the day we're grown up people and can both make and be responsible for our own decisions. I don't think that I would have fared very well before womens sufferage!!!
The Basset Hounds were here today - they are such lovely dogs, I think Millie thought they were deformed!! OH took her to follow the hunt, and she's now out for the count hopefully till morning!

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 26 Feb 2013 18:31

Liz I have never followed a hunt but have been to meets and got the badge to prove I went to one after they banned fox hunting.

Yes Frank there were postmasters.

Jane I had rimless glasses again. Will you have the sunglasses as varifocals if you get on with them?

It took me a while to get used to them but I wold'nt have anything else now. They told me not to drive in them at first. When I went to feed the chickens, when I first had them and looked down at the ground I thought I was walking into a shallow hole/dip.

Jane

Jane Report 26 Feb 2013 18:40

Oh Liz I don't like Hunts. But I bet Millie enjoyed herself :-DI remember some years ago waking up early one morning to see a big pack of hounds with the Huntsman behind coming up our Road. They then turned down the lane to the stables where I think the Hunt started from. When ever I was out with my old dog and heard a Horn blowing I would leg it home quickly lol. They don't stop for anyone :-|

I had a little laugh today.I put a load of bird seed out near the patio, and then I spotted a little Vole running in and out from the rockery snaffling it up :-D.I will try and keep an eye open for it and see if I can get a pic.Trouble is it is so quick.

LilyL

LilyL Report 26 Feb 2013 19:37

The Bassets only come here twice a year Mel/ Jane,(from the New Forest) and they almost never catch anything including today! It's always on foot and relies on the dogs trailing a scent as, speed is not their forte! Rabbits nearly always go to earth and they then pick up another scent and off they go again! Hares are so swift they almost always get away although the Bassets will track them for miles. I'm not that keen on hunting, it is something I Iwouldn't want to do, BUT sadly 'they' have to be controlled and for me any other methods of doing this are far more cruel, poison, gassing, lamping, trapping, ughhh, horrible.
Death in Paradise tonight, last one, I shall miss it.

Jane

Jane Report 26 Feb 2013 19:39

LOL David ...I was going to say Dog's Body :-D.Need to find out where that saying came from.
Mel yes if i get on with the Varifocals I will have the same with sunglasses.
I had Varifocals once a few years ago and felt dizzy the whole time so went back to normals. But now I am so fed up changing specs every few minutes(one for reading and one for tv) it;s doing my head in .I will give the Vari's another go.
They always ask if Glaucoma is in the family....this is when I have to say I have no idea about my family history (being adopted).I was very impressed with Spec Sav***
I had to have the puff of air done again by the actual Optometrist. He had to hold my eyes open with his fingers so I couldn't blink when the puff came lol.

I have a ton of Casserole if anyone fancies.I can't believe how much there is :-S

Frank

Frank Report 26 Feb 2013 20:33

All settled for the evening. Ros watching Holby me with Football. At least we don't argue. !!!

Every Boxing Day when I lived in Barton I would go to Brigstock and see the Hunt go off. We were never able to follow, as they went over fields Until I moved up here I had never seen a hunt.and I was 26 !!!

My first Varifocals were difficult to get use to. When going down stairs they seemed TWO FOOT DEEP. or more. and had to keep taking them off.

Now, Now, you lady libs. You know you do as you are told. DON'T ALL WOMEN. I've just got my TIN HAT out. !!!

Did you all receive tonight's editions ????
Jane that tale of the vole reminded me when we were at Gayton, we had a family of mice living in the stone wall at the end of the patio. Silly Ros, would feed them cheese, and out they would pop, grab a bit and back in again. We would stand at the kitchen window for ages.

As we are talking about things ocular, did you see that in the papers a few weeks back about a woman lost her left eye following using contacts she had bought off ebay...Isn't that rotten luck?

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 26 Feb 2013 20:45

Jne my second pair change in the sun to sunglasses. I paid £49 for this reactalight lens.

I too used to go a bit dizzy with the first pair I had but this will be my third now. Mum had them too when she could see out of both eyes and even when she only had sight in one eye they charged her the same price and one lens was just glass.

Jane

Jane Report 26 Feb 2013 21:08

Oh Heck .I think Chester is demented tonight.Looks like he has lost the plot.He keeps wandering and standing in odd places just looking into space :-S.He reminds me of elderly patients who get confused at night, when they are not sure where they are.He has walked over 2 settees and chucked the cushions on the floor ,then went behind one settee and just looked at me from the corner. Then he went upstairs and came down again(probably looking for me) even though I was sat here calling him.
At least I know when I lock the doors tonight he can't let himself out and go wandering !!

Chris has just arrived ,so I had better go and 'Greet' :-D

Jane

Jane Report 26 Feb 2013 21:22

David ,I did see that. How scary was that???Poor lady :-S.Eyes are so delicate and precious. Was she the lady who was given a false eye that looked so real?
