How brilliant they took that amount Frank......and the scarves nearly all sold too and Ros has more orders! She is on to a winner with those. :-D :-D You will burning the midnight oil on E*ay ordering more wool next!! That price hike on the Blue Badge sounds extortionate!!

That's a nuisance about the roof tiles Mel. It's always the same with sizes isn't it. We can't get driveway brick blocks the same size as the ones on our drive now and they are only 11 years old!! OH's car dripped a bit of oil on we can't get off and we thought we'd buy 2 or 3........wrong!! Maybe you can get some close enough in size to use though, but it means holding up the job to get them just when your OH wants to get it done. :-S I watched a few episodes of the earlier The Land Girls Mel and enjoyed it but I seemed to forget when it was on. I didn't know about this last series.

Glad you had a good day with Hannah Jane. That market sounds interesting. I used to love the Birmingham market years ago with all the strange produce we never saw around here. I bet that one is a lot bigger though. What, another posh hotel, Luton Hoo was only last June.....Chris better watch out.....getting expensive tastes!! :-D :-D

I'm off to bed now to watch Strictly I recorded.....night, night xx

Just saw your post Fiona. I expect it is as you think after having had those staples out and that everything is a bit upset after the tugging to do it. Hopefully, things will settle down again now and you will have a better night tonight. It sounds as if you are healing nicely which is good.

Night Night all. What a great evening at the Albert Hall. Had lumps in my throat on more than one occasion.

Morning All,

Sorry to hear you had a bad night Fiona. You are bound to be a little bruised after haveing your staples out. Mum had those when she had her hysto. They looked vicious things and she too was very sore when they came out. Hope things were a bit better last night and you got more sleep.

Jane you sound like you really enjoyed your day with Hannah, I am so glad. it must be good to have a girly day.I have'nt been to London for about 28 years. I have'nt seen any of the new bridges or buildings only o the telly. I know I would'nt recognize many places there now.

Frank what a smashing amount for the scouts. Will there be a Christmas sale this year for them??

The blimmin sheet on the roof was blowing something shocking last night when the wind came up. I know he won't be up there today as it is still bellowing. He is also finding it difficult to stand up there for a long time. He is quite a big man and has big feet which don't exactly fit into the holes on the roof. His belly also gets i the way when trying to bend!! I told him he should loose a bit of weight :-| There is me on a diet and he is eating even more at lunchtime and at night :-(

Ann and Fiona you could always go to BBC iplayer and watch all the last series of The Land Girls.

Afternoon Everyone.
Did have a better sleep last night , but I am very weary today ,maybe my little trip out yesterday, took a bit more energy than I thought it would.
just resting today in front of the tv and waiting for the family to arrive for dinner usually around 4.

Have an appointment with the nurse at the surgery tomorrow for my usual 6 months blood test. honestly I feel this year I have done nothing than seen doctors, do tests and had so many blood tests taken I have lost count. :-|

Frank Report 13 Nov 2011 13:25

Afternoon. Was going to the church service, but decided I love the TV and all the marching, and music. So got myself settled and watch it for 2 hours.

Smashing morning out there today. The conservatory is like an oven.!!

Kim, If you would really like a scarf I am sure Ros would knit you one.

Jane, I have a job to remember the last time I walked along the Thames. I use to have my lunch most days sitting beside the Thames at The Tower of London. My office was only 5 minutes away. When a larger ship came up the River. The bridge would open up to let them through.

When Dad was on the pleasure boats, from the pier at the Tower, to Ramsgate/Margate. The Bridge has to open to let us out and again at night to let us in. The music was always "A LIFE ON THE OCEAN WAVES" and that was 60 years ago. or more.

I related a story to Ros last night about the Guhkers. My 2nd eldest brother was stationed with them in Burma during the war. One night this Guhkerr was sharpening his "DAGGER"/KNIFE. After about an hour my brother asked it was sharpe. My brother had the hairiest arms you could imagine. The Guhker took his hand and with one movement SHAVED his arm of all the hair. He never asked again :-0 :-0 :-0

Mel, Is there not a friend your OH could call upon to help with the roof.. We don't want any accidents.

The official opening of the Scout hut takes place at the end of the month, so they will have another sale then. And I think there is a Christmas Bazaar in the villiage hall during December. So loads more money still to come I will be on the internet later, when she decides what colours she wants. No peace for the wicked.

OK, *peeps round corner* it is like venturing into a new office or school or something to post on a thread where all are so obviously comfortable with each other but I have often read the thread and see a lot of 'old' friends on here.

Mel, it puzzles me why the thread is so named when it is a chat thread? Is there a reason behind that or is it just that the thread has evolved? Nice to see that there are actually more people posting on the general board than we think anyway. :-) :-)

Frank good to 'see' you again, used to chat to you on another thread way back I think.

Afternoon everyone.
I am cream crackered today lol.Ache in every bit too :-S.I did sleep well though.
What a beautiful day it is .Just like a summers day.Chris ,me and Fitz have been sat out at the patio table having a good natter and glass of wine.I did notice though the the table is looking very black. It should be teak. It's all the result of the fire.So before we cover it up for the winter it will need a good scrub.
Chris has been up the ladder :-S :-S to fix the security light. It gives me the willies seeing him up there.James was on watch though (thank goodness)

It was nice yesterday to see so many people wearing poppies.I was trying to pin mine on in the morning and it came to bits :-S.So was poppyless.
Our meal will be about 3 o'clock. My nice Normandy Pork Casserole with little tiny roast potatoes.Jess loves my roast pots ,so I couldn't let her go back to uni without having any this weekend.

Fiona ,you are maybe still getting over the effect of the Anaesthetic. It can take a long time for some people (with tiredness)

Frank I think it is an amazing amount of money raised. Those Scouts are lucky Boys and Girls.

The thread has been whooshed a couple of times by GR for unexplainable reasons but we have managed to carry on.It is always nice to see a new name with new memories.

Subject: ONIONS ~ MAYONNAISE - a MUST READ

ONIONS ~ MAYONNAISE
PLEASE READ TO THE END: IMPORTANT

In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that
visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu.
Many of the farmers and their family had contracted it and many died.

The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very
healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different
the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the
rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't
believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under
the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu
virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping
the family healthy.
Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser in AZ. She said that several
years ago many of her employees were coming down with the flu and so were
many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions
around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must
work.. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who
regularly contributes material to me on health issues.. She replied with this
most interesting experience about onions:

Thanks for the reminder. I don't know about the farmers story.. but, I do
know that I contacted pneumonia and needless to say I was very ill.. I came
across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put it into an
empty jar...placing the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the
onion would be black in the morning from the germs.. sure enough it happened
just like that.. the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.

Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around
the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful
antibacterial, antiseptic properties.

This is the other note.

Lots of times when we have stomach problems we don't know what to blame.
Maybe it's the onions that are to blame. Onions absorb bacteria is the
reason they are so good at preventing us from getting colds and flu's and is
the very reason we shouldn't eat an onion that has been sitting for a time
after it has been cut open.

LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS

I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, Makers of
mayonnaise.. Mullins is huge, and is owned by 11 brothers and sisters in the
Mullins family. My friend, Jeanne, is the CEO.

Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I learned
from a chemist.

The guy who gave us our tour is named Ed. He's one of the brothers Ed is a
chemistry expert and is involved in developing most of the sauce formula.
He's even developed sauce formula for McDonald's..

Keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone
asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always
worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. Ed said
that all commercially- made Mayo is completely safe.

"It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but
it's not really necessary." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at
a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked
about the quaint essential picnic, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on
the table and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick.

Ed says that! when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials
look for is when the 'victim' last ate ONIONS and where those onions came
from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as
it's not homemade Mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the
onions, and if not the onions, it's the POTATOES.

He explained, onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked
onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. He says
it's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your
refrigerator.

It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit,
that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you
put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!)
Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions.

Please remember it is dangerous to cut an onion and try to use it to cook the next day, it becomes highly poisonous for even a single night and creates toxic bacteria which may cause adverse stomach infections because of excess bile secretions and even food poisoning.

Hi AnninGlos,

The thread started in 2008 and has been going for 3 years now.

As Ann said it has been whooshed twice :-| :-| :-|

We just carry on taking amonst ourselves as we have all become friends over the years.

So lets have some of your memories please?? once again. We don't mind if they have been on here before because most of us have forgotten them anyway and a reminder is always useful.

Well I am sure you have had all the following before but remember? Powdered egg, eggs preserved in isonglass, nasty tasting margerine, powdered potato, OK you an still get smash but the stuff we were served at infant school had such a peculiar smell. For breakfast we did used to have something I liked, Dad used to cook little fritters made from a powder beaten with milk, they used to crisp up and were lovely fried in bacon fat. Oh yes beef dripping smothered in salt (I wonder we survived fairly healthy!).
