Jane strangles is awful. It is a nasal infection which makes the horses throat and nose swell up. they have a discharge from the nasal passages which is contagous to other horses and can be picked up off a pasture by mucus. The horse also gets a fever and an abscess the lymph nodes swell in the throat and neck.

I remember having coloured sugar, not to be confused with brown sugar, this was tiny balls of sugar in all sorts of colours but I can only remember pink and lilac. No-one I know has ever heard of them when I've mentioned it.

It is Mel and just how you describe. Apparently he had a huge abcess under his throat that burst and left a big hole. I think she said the vet didn't want to give him penicillin so soon as it can affect their breathing and that is affected anyway with all the swelling, but he was so ill she didn't dare delay. They can't eat either Jane as the abcesses are inside their throats. She looks after him so well he is normally in top condition but she said he has lost so much weight his bones are all sticking out now. He is aged 20 now and she is a bit concerned he seems to be getting a runnier nose again. Usually once they have had it they are immune for a few months so she wonders if it is another infection while he is so run down.

We did a bit of shopping earlier and had to sit in the drive when we got back until the stair rods stopped coming down!! :-( Sick of it now and the wind blowing stuff over. I can't believe it is June!I hope it has been better where Maureen's daughter got married. I feel sorry for all the poor folk with open gardens, garden fetes and carnivals.

What a difference next week will make Liz. At least the weather won't stop the indoor stuff being done. I bet Millie is not totally sure which is base now with you showering in the caravan! lol.

It's worked out quite well with the summerhouse being there for James to use as his office hasn't it Jane! I think OH would like that.

Hi Josie,

I remember coloured sugar but it was in sort of flat retangular crystals in pink, yellow, green, lilac and white. Mum had some and said it was coffee sugar. I used to like to eat it as it was harder than normal sugar. There was also a brown sugar that was like broken stones also for coffee.

Ann I know you have to keep the abscess hol e really clean after it has burst. Young and old horses are suseptable to Strangles and it never leaves their systems. A virol infection that they carry all through their lives I think.

Jane

Jane Report 16 Jun 2012 21:42

Hi Josie. It was sugar used in coffee. We had the coloured sugar but it was only used in coffee ,mainly when we has visitors.(posh sugar lol).I always found it never dissolved as well as normal sugar, but it was nice to pinch a bit out of the sugar bowl when no-one was looking lolol.I do remember it going a bit solid in the bowl if it hadn't been used for sometime

Oh ,the poor horse :-S :-S It just sounds a dreadful thing :-( :-(.Fingers crossed it pulls through.
I am now totally cream crackered and am off to bed.
Yes the Summerhouse is just perfect for James to work in Ann,He will normally be out there until about 1-2am when things slow down and then he will come in to the comfort of the lounge .Not sure Chester is too happy about it as his sleep is disturbed lol especially when James has to answer phone calls :-S
Night Night x

Yes I remember it was always about when mum had coffee mornings or went to them. The mums in the street held weekly coffee mornings back then and out came the coloured sugar, us kids were always allowed to eat them as sweets on these mornings.
I wasn't alive when it was still rationing, but my sister who was says she thinks ordinary sugar was rationed, but coloured sugar wasn't. She remembers eating it all through the war and afterwards as sweets. Mind you her memory isn't always correct these days.

So glad a few others remember, otherwise I would think my sister and I were imagining things

H A P P Y F A T H E R S D A Y to all us fathers on this thread, to fathers, past and present of all those on the thread too. Hope you all have a happy day and are spoilt rotten : ;-) :-D <3

Also, I don't remember coloured sugar either???

Sorry I haven't been on, bad week, everything been going pear-shaped here. Carmel had her back pain injections at the hospital on Monday, very painfull, you should see the bruises - but maybe not! Then we have both had 'flu and are still shaking it off. The rest is a catalogue of bad news, it will keep to another day, don't want to spoil Fathers Day.

Nearest daughter has invited us over this afternoon for a Fathers Day meal, I've got my cards, texts and am just off to stick my bacon & mushrooms in the pan, yummy. So the rest of you, all have a good - and hopefully dry (weather-wise anyway) day, catch up with you all soon.

Morning all,

That sugar was un refined coloured rocks, It was a devil to melt, even in the hottest water. My ex use to buy it for her "Mothers Club Metting" held at our houses. I am happy to stick to the granulated.

Still very overcast here, with loads of clouds, BUT no rain yet, and the wind has droped off a great deal.

What a treat it is to be able to turn on the HOT TAP and get HOT WATER. I'm licking my wounds over the cost, but it had to be done.

No word from MY kids, but both the boys have been on the phone.

Welcome Josie, another youngster to add to my collection !!!!

Going to make the Yorkshire Pudding Mix now and cheese sauce for the Cauili (JUST FOR JANE). I will make indiviguals today, as there could be seven of us.

Must get showered and shaved, and put my best tucker on, and my APRON ;-) ;-) ;-) Must keep myself clean for my guests. :-D :-D :-D
