I have quite a few postcards sent to my paternal grandmother from my grandfather before they were married.
There was a whole thick album of them but mum left this with their sons match box collection on a seat she sold and the dealer took the lot.
I can remember there being lovely ladies in big hats with feathers on and a series of dogs I think. Then there were the ones that you could drop down a whole load of pics in a sort of concertina thing. A peacock and you could turn its tail around. Think I may still have one of those. There were lots that moved to entertain. I never forgave my mum for letting those go and they were'nt even hers to sell, they were mine as I was next of kin and not her as she thought. My dad died before my nan died.

Mel I got Chris a Chiminea for the patio. He had Channe* Bleu aftershave, shirt, books,Theatre Tickets (from Hannah),the Cinema tickets (James ,plus books and a nice bottle of Red.Fitz gave him a huge bottle of Glenliv** Whisky. Janices parcel hasn't arrived and yet it was guaranteed next day delivery.
My car ,that I thought would be back home this evening is still in the garage. It needs some new bits that have to come from France :-S.So I have had to ring the Insurance broker to fax them a cover note so I can have a courtesy car .She had done it for a week, but it can be extended for a further week if needed. The problem is something to do with oil leaking into the Cam Shaft(sensor).I don't know where oil is leaking from. A good job I had it go in as the Guarantee runs out next month !
Thanks William for the pics of the Card and Brooch .It is lovely and such a nice thing to pass on to your Daughter.
Frank when I see a load of emails in my inbox.I can guess who they are from lol
I think it is time to get that cake out and light the candles :-D

M el. That thought crossed my mind, but didn't like to ask. !!
SWALK. BOLTOP can't remember the words to BURMA, David will tell me.
Will, I had a postcard from my 2nd eldest brother from BURMA. all in silk of the turned up roofs on the houses, and temple's. Had if for donkey years, but got lost somewhere along the way. I think I mentioned before my eldest brother sent Mum a box of almonds from Italy. She kept that till the day she died. She kept all her insurance books in it from when I was a child.
Mel, I will have to try the old Washing Soda. I don't think we have any in the cupboard, but if we have, it will be solid by now. !!!
When I was going sea fishing Ros would always make and pack my lunch for the trip, in the sandwhiches were little love letters. Oh to be young again. I was FOURTY at the time. The lads would take the pi## out of me, but I just said what are you going home to tonight !!!! :-D :-D :-D
Glad you enjoyed Les Mis Jane, Ros says she could go and see it again any time. I bet she will too.

I was quite surprized when I bought my last pack of washing soda as it is not in those big chunks anymore. Now it is like a powdery stuff. Still works though, suppose they just crush it up more these days so people don't make bath salts out of it by adding a little food colouring. Who remembers doing that?????

Thank you William for sending the memories. Like you all I have all the old post cards, photos and other family memorabillia, all in a large suitcase going back to the 1850's!! Xmas cards going way back, and odd letters, Wills, even birth certificates!. My mother as the eldest, and only daughter, inherited the family archives from her parents, and, as an only child I inherited them from her and in time they will go to L. It is fascinating going through old photos, Post Cards from WW1, envelopes with 'received,(and the date)' written on the back. Two letters from me from school , one when I first went there (sad!!) other one just before I left (confident and self assured, not even remotely sad!) Also a card I wrote asking for Hockey Boots, Wellington Boots, my bible and geometry set to be sent as I had left them at home!! My mother has written on this card, 'sent geometry set, but NOT the rest'!!! I remember it, I was able to borrow,(lost [property) but there was still a fuss!! My mother died in 1986, and it was the worse day of my life - a sudden death, and to be honest I still don't want to talk about it. My stepfather followed 8 months later (cancer) and that was the second worse day of my life, trouble was, I thought they were both immortal, but they weren't - so, that was that. Still very windy here today, but at least the sun has poked through. M rang yesterday, There is a log cabin for sale near Newbury, and he is going to have a look at it! - He's got a very pretty cottage on top of the downs a mile out of Wantage so I don't think that moving is on the agenda, just curiosity I suppose!. We watch 'Murder in Paradise' too William. I don't think the story line is very good!! (I went to sleep last night from start to finish!) but we like the two main characters, and the Island scenery is lovely and colourful, and the pace is just slow and gentle. Don't think we shall watch 'Ripperr Sreet' any more, just too much gratuitous (spelling) violence. Stick to Mr S!!!!!

Morning all/Evening Kim,
Lots of wind last night (outside). This morning it's bright sunshine.
Mel, We use to use household soda in the bath, withour scent !!! to keep the scum off the side of the bath. We washed our hair from a chunk of carbolic soap cut from a block. No fancy shampoos for us poor people. AH AH.
Put salt and boiling water down the drain again this morning, will go out and see if there is any change. If not, It looks like MORE EXPENSE.
Took quinene tablet last night, no cramp. !!!
I woke with a real start at 4.00 am this morning. The time my DAD died. How strange is that. Took me a long time to get back to sleep. Got up and made tea about 8.00 am.
Ros has a new iron to try today, I sold the old one on Ebay and got over £20.00 for it. The new one was under £50.00. I also changed car insurance yesterday. The renewal was £260. odd The new one is £142.00. with better terms. ie excess was £250.00 now zero. windscreen cover excess was £100.00 now £75.00. replacement car as standard.
Nice to see you about Liz.
Hope you all enjoy todays Emails took me ages to forward. But for friends, NO TROUBLE AT ALL.

They're brilliant Frank and thankyou! Talking of Post Cards, in amongst my suitcase of goodies, there is a 'Gill' Postcard that my stepfather sent to my mother when she and I were on holiday, and he was left at home, and it shows a dumpy woman sitting up in bed with curlers, and the caption reads 'I do miss my old man, no cuppa tea, no nothing'! my father had popped Wo... before 'man' to make it read correctly!! It must have made them laugh to keep it all those years!!!

My dad was in the RAF and mum and he had only been going out a little while, he heard through the grapevine that she had gone to the pictures with a sailor, he wrote her a letter saying, do you want an airman or a sailor, make up your mind ...... forever the romantic my dad :-0

Hi everyone, glad you like the postcards. I have a whole raft of similar post cards that he sent, all blank and from that era. They are mostly songs of the time, three to a set, A Broken Doll, Rock of Ages, Roses of Picardy, The Rosary.
Anyway, David hasn't responded to Frank's request for what BURMA sttod for, Very naughty David, it meant Be Undressed Ready My Darling. What for, I can only hazard a guess :-D :-D I know there loads of different ones when I was in the RAF which we wrote on the back of our envelopes with letters to our sweethearts. (Now, there's a word you don't hear these days!)
Frank, loved the heap of emails as usual, but don't think I'll be buying anymore doughnuts! Love the Irish jokes too, even though I'm married to an Irish colleen - one things the Irish can do, is laugh at themselves. Only when you go over to Ireland they tell similar jokes but they are aimed at the people of Kerry - so are called 'Kerrymen jokes'
Mel, I've noticed washing soda is much finer now too. Not sure about making bath salts out it though! I was thinking of the 'old days' and I remember my Mum used to have a bottle of perfume called 'Phul Nana', had a picture of a dancing Asian or oriental girl on it. I think that was went she couldn't afford Evening in Paris..

I never heard of anyone cutting the lawn at this time of year Mandy.it must be soaking too.The wind is still very strong here .I haven't had anything out on the line as I haven't done any washing :-D I picked up the Courtesy Car this morning and it is WHITE.They normally have black ones.I don't like the white :-S.Can't grumble though ,at least I have it.
Mel I forgot to turn the Freezer on lol.So nothing in it yet.It had to stand for 4 hours before switching on.On now though.I will transfer the food that is in my neighbours little freezer that I borrowed so I can get that back to them once it is cleaned and dry. I will probably do a freezer shop next week.
I heard from my Birth Brother Peter, and he has booked into a Hotel just nearby on Friday so we can meet up.That will only be the third time I have ever seen him . It will be just me as I know the rest are the family are uneasy about the whole thing. I do understand in way ,but I can't change the way they feel,so as long as I see him thats fine.I just feel sorry that I can't invite him here.Thankfully he is understanding so it really isn't a problem.
I have a painful ear when I swallow :-S and a bit of sno*** feeling about me.I hope it doesn't turn into anything now :-|
Need to start dinner.Jess is going tonight .I think her train is at 8

Well I did'nt get my glass doors done. Friends called in and stayed ages. Did'nt see them since before Christmas and wondered why and they had both been ill all over Christmas. Not easy when you have about 10 horses and 6 pigs, two dogs and two cats. They only live just down the road from us and we never knew. We could have helped them otherwise.
So all I have done today is clean out Hogwart and a bit of ironing and lunch and do the chickens. I would'nt have minded but we were outside all the time and my feet got frozen.

Oh is off ringing tonight so its two boiled eggs for me and he can have a cheese and onion crustless quiche when he gets in.

Still got blocked drains, but seems to be getting better. Taking longer to overflow.I have spoken to Harvey, he can get something from a friend that should do the job. He has told me not to pay to have it cleared.
Lazy day apart from doing the drain with the plunger every few hours.
Steak and Kidney pie, mash, swede and cabbage for dinner tonight. Utterly STUFFED now.
See you later.

Glad I didn't make a mistake with speeling of Phul Nana - nice to know others have heard of it. Mandy, that price you quoted has me worried! Hope Mum wasn't doing anything illegal LOL.
Some nice emails folks, the glacier was totally awesome - nature can be so spectacular - and frightening sometimes.
Nothing much for me on TV tonight but I'm recording the afternoon BBC1 'Moving On' series - then we watch them in the evening- brilliant.

Hello Mel Fairy Godmother MEMORIES.
I did post some of my memories on this, but that was a couple of weeks ago, .
Yes I remember aqs a child ( kid ) , we used to collect R Whites lemonade bottles and take them to the shop to get the deposits , BUT ! Our l;ocal shop would only take so many, so then we would walk down the Cally (Caledonian Road ) or go up Holloway and take remainder to shops there.
The Lemonade crystals made good lemonade, my children used to buy SPACE DUST, it fizzled in your mouth, Also we used to buy GOBB STOPPERS half penny small one or a penny a large one , would take you hours to suck away ,sometimes taking it wrapping it in paper and started again later ..
Good Happy Memories, Its a shame because young now-a days do not have these experiances , JUST MOBILE PHONES ETC. . .No I can say I honestly am not jealous, I think they are missing out on their young lives. . dopeydoc dave
