Am I right in saying I'm the second eldest on this thread?
I know Frank has a couple of years start on me.
I recently had my sixty seventh birthday.
The rest of you will be comparative youngsters?

I have a completed Kitchen at long last :-D :-D :-D.I know don't care how long the rest of the work will take lol.Tomorrow will be a big cleaning job .I suppose the floor will feel a bit gritty for some time from all the grouting stuff. My steam mop will be working overtime (if I can find it ) :-S And I now have a blind at the kitchen window. The first time in 21 years!!!!.It was a bit of a bug*** to cut and fit apparently.
I think now I had better start getting dinner together.

I am a youngster of 58 David. :-D.I think William might pip Frank (not sure though)
I think Fiona might be our youngest(again not sure).

Mel talking of sweet shops. When I was between the age of maybe 5 to 9 I would get my thruppence pocket money and dash of to Mrs Trudgen who had a little wooden shop. She had all the old fashioned sweets.I know I have said before here that my favourite buy was Twisted Barley sugar sticks with chocolate that went down through the middle.I think they were a Penny each.I would suck them until I got a really sharp point on the top and then snap it off.(I could have poked someones eye out ) lol
Then it would be Black Jacks and Fruit Salads.I think they were 4 for a penny.
I do remember having a farthing sometimes!!!!........My two probably have never heard of a farthing.
Going back to Mrs.Trudgens shop .It was dark with wooden planked floor and wooden counter with scales.I do remember having Winter Mixtures weighed out .
All sweets put in to little paper bags and ending up all sticky :-S

Just had a phone call from a very groggy sounding James. He can be collected from the hospital at 8.15. :-D.

William Report 9 Nov 2012 19:46

Yes, Jane, I put my hand up and admit that I'm 77 years young. You probably guessed that from some of the tales I tell from the past.

Thanks for all the thoughts for Carmel and meal suggestions. She is resting a lot and doesn't really feel hungry, which does help on the menu side.

Maureen, it's Charley Fairhead you're thinking of in Casualty. We always thought he was a little wooden until we found out that he suffers from cervical dystonia, which means he gets spasms in his neck which are both painful and hard to treat. We found this out because Carmel; has oromandibular dystonia and we learnt about Charley through the support group. I suppose now we realise what he must go through sometimes on set.

Had tea on my own tonight and performed a miracle. I actually made my first ever perfect omelette. I know you girls (and probably Frank, our gourmet chef) will probably laugh at this admission. Normally my attempts end up with a a sort of egg crash in the frying pan! And boy did I ENJOY it, yummy.

Anyway, off to check on my patient . . . C Y A S

So I'm not so old?
We all get older at exactly the same rate.
Iv'e just been feeling my age lately :(

Any one remember aniseed balls :))

William

William Report 9 Nov 2012 20:54

Yep, David. The man in our off licence on the corner used to sell them from a big glass jar. It was next to the jar he kept my favourite big Arrowroot biscuits.
Also there were the gobstoppers and the black and white striped ones.
When I took the empty bottles back for the pennies on them, that what was my treat in exchange.

MillymollyAmanda

MillymollyAmanda Report 9 Nov 2012 21:12

Well i'am just behind Jane at a young 57 :-D

Oh i haven't had any Aniseed balls for years , didn't they have a little nut in the middle?

He is lying the settee ,with a face ache :-S.I keep telling him to go to bed but just get a dirty look .I will leave it to Jess to deal with him .He won't listen to
'Mummy' :-S :-S

I am off to bed myself now so will say night night..........I love Aniseed Balls and sucking them right down to the seed in the middle. It's been a long time since I had one.I think my sister brought some here a few years ago.

Frank

Frank Report 9 Nov 2012 21:43

My, you have been budy again. Natter Natter Natter. !!!!

Yes, The old girl in Canada is the oldest. U... But you can still get them at H & Bs. Ros will try to get to town to see if she can get some for me to try. :

We (us kids when young) would have our thrupenny bit on a Sat evening to go to the sweet shop. My brother always had a Mar# bar. That he would cut into SEVEN Pieces and have one a day. Mind you they were 3 times the size they are today. My sister would buy something that lasted a couple of minutes. My twin would get lemonade powder, and I would get either GOBSTOPPERS or aniseed balls. They always lasted the longest. Later on a Sat night when M & D went for a drink. We would make our own CRISPS. slicing very thin potatoes, and frying them in lard. Never tasted the same as SMITHS with the little blue salt bag.

The arrowroot biscuits were sold in the Off licence at a penny each. If you were lucky and he had some broken ones he would give you a load for tuppence. and crushed bags of crisps for a penny.

Have been waiting for Lewis's report to come through. but nothing yet.

Anybody doing anything nice this weekend ???

Hope James is O.K. when he returns from hospital.

Evening All,

Just lost my 'post'......boohoo!

We didn't go to the N*C yesterday, but might go Sunday as the teacher said it would be quieter and there may be some bargains on the last day. As I needed stuff for today's class I shot off to the bead shop at Loughborough......big mistake!! Diversions everywhere as there was a HUGE fair taking up loads of the streets, so it took me ages to park. I had a walk around some of the fair afterwards and had to chuckle to myself when I saw the Gallopers. The names have changed with the times, but 'Darren' doesn't sound quite right, somehow. There was also a pretty scary looking Ghost Train.

David I'm right behind you in the 'age' stakes! A lady missed class today because of her 60th birthday......I thought it sounded quite 'young' now. Shirl, I thought you were younger than that. No 'snake hips' for you on the dance floor then!

Sorry that Carmel is having a rough time William. How about jelly and icecream.....should slip down easy. Well done with your omelette, I bet you enjoyed it too!

Visited MIL today. She is doing well, but we have both noticed the last couple of weeks that when we go to visit, she answers the door using the walker the hospital lent her, but then leaves it in the hall. She then walks about, follows FIL around, answers the phone and goes upstairs without any problem?? :-S

Mel, OH is just the same. I bought a new silver line for the rotary ages ago and OH put it in the garage. The old one is falling to bits now so I asked him to fetch the new one for me to replace it........he couldn't find it so came and asked ME where it was. lol. My answer was that it was wherever he'd put it!!! :-S It's still missing!! lol.

Jane I bet you are itching to get your kitchen all straight tomorrow with everything to hand. I hope James' faceache soon goes so he can :-D at mummy again.

Frank, Lewis seems to have his head screwed on right, doing well at his new school as well as becoming a nice young man.....with such a good attitude he has a lot going for him. Fancy your little Poodle fetching her OWN crisps in the dark!

Will catch up with the posts tomorrow. :-D

Our local sweet shot was Charlie Butler's at the corner of Portland Road and Warwick Street. He sold every thing.

But another treat to spend our pennies on was from a grocers on Sandyford Road.He would sell you broken biscuits from the bottom of the tin.

I recall where played in the back lane. Some one would would have a huge gob stopper that he would suck till it changed colour then then I'd it until it changed colour again then some one else had a go.

I recall a bonfire a the end of the back lane when I was a small boy. Some older boy was fooling around and jumping over the fire.He stumbled and fell into the fire.I recall his name was Alf Parker.Nasty accident.

We had trams ran past the front of our house. On day a boy ran across the road in the path of a tram.Wasn't killed, but was never the same again.

Do you remember trolley buses?

Morning All and Evening Kim,

Well the sun is shining at the moment and we have blue sky with white fluffy clouds.

It rained yesterday evening and I did'nt see either hedgies. In fact most food is still there this morning. Hogwart came out the box last night earlier on as a little of the food was gone from his bowl and I put the stick back up against the entrance which tells me if he has been out again. It is still there.

So what's everyone up to today then??

I shall go and get the paper and some mince from the shop so I can do a nice easy chilli tonight then do some rings with moss and then clear some of the tunnel I think. I wonder how many things I get done as planned or what oh has planned for me today.

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 10 Nov 2012 10:02

It just rain lightly here as I went out to feed the wild birds :-( sun is still out though.

Morning from a wet Northampton,

Rain in the night and still bits and bobs around this morning.

Don't know what happened to my poist last night. I was going to say. You know shirl is the oldest, the way she boss's me around <3 <3 <3

DEavid. Yes the old trolly buses. They had a set route and when they got to the terminal they would transfer the poles for the electricity to the other side for the return journey. We had quite a few in the East end of London, also the trams. Very dodgey if you were on a bike, so easy to get your front wheel in the track.

Hows James this morning. ?? I bet his jaw is a bit sore. A drop of whiskey round the gum will help.

Ros is off shopping with Martine. Catch up with all the news. I expect my name will be MUD, and my ears will start burning. :-0 :-0 :-0

I am going to get brownie points today. There is a pile of ironing in the basket. So will set too and get thaqt done, before going for a pint at lunchtime, will leave her tops, or that will be wrong !!!!

Jane Report 10 Nov 2012 11:03

Morning/Evening All
Well I have the same weather as you Frank.Although I think it has stopped raining.
A perfect day for cleaning up.
James is OK this morning but is sore and face a little swollen. He has just had some sandwiches cut into little bits.
I think the only place I have seen Trams or Trolley Buses was in Amsterdam.

Right I really need to get on .Back this afternoon.
