Milly,John and Joseph and doubtless Joseph's Father all worked on the River Tyne as Watermen.
As oars and sail gave way to coal fired engines there was less need of them.
Mt GGF John Atkinson is listed as a marine engineer on my Grand Father's marriage certificate.

Hi All,
Well I spent all day on your thread Jane and thats why I was'nt on here. If you go to Find Ancestors you will see what people have found.
I thought you would have looked in there after you gave the details of the marriage cert as I copied and pasted it straight on the thread.
Dry here today but dull and a bit windy.

Glad you are getting sorted out with your rellies David and Jane, What a great help the girls are to us. <3 <3
Not much happening here. Ros is busy on the "CROSS" for the window at the chapel. The Pastor would like it in situ. by 15th October, HE SHOULD BE SO LUCKY !!! The girls are working their little cotton socks off for free to do this, so he will have to be patient. Weather here is very windy and overcast., looks like rain again. Some of the area's have had it realy bad. Did you see the poor devils in Spain ??? I was in that Area when I sold properties with Condad and Jan.
We are trying a piece of Brisket of beef today. I put it in the oven on 100 degrees about 12 pm for four/five o'clock dinner. Mum always put her big joint in at 6.00 am for 2.00 pm dinner. The slower its cooked the more tender it gets (LETS HOPE SO) Will have a look and see how it's doing.. I am also doing honey glazed carrots, cauli, runners, roast pots and parsnips.
That BL###Y song "Lets go fly a kite" on that advert. is driving me mad. I went to bed last night and it stuck in my head. and keept me awake till long into the night.

Mel, That song came from "MARY POPPINS" It was sung by David Tomlinson, when he took the children to the park. Blood# thing is stuck in the grove, and won't shift. round and round in my head like a disc. !!!!
Well the Brisket was a success, cooked on low heat in a roaster for almost 4 hours.on a trivet with Carrots, Onions, Celery and a potato in a pint of water. The trivet kept the meat out of the liquid. and it made lovely gravy. Still got a jug full over for tomorrow.
Going to have a read of my book now. Who was it who got a Kind#e ??? Don't forget the CDs that are going around, we will all be reading the same books soon. I'm on a good one at the moment DCI Banks. The series is coming on tele sood with ???? TOMKINSON. all about a detective in the Yorkshire moors Mel That B ADVERT HAS JUST BEEN ON AGAIN< It's set me off. !!!!

Afternoon All,
It's 'some enchanted evening' Mel. Don't start me off getting the words wrong.....I do it all the time......OH thinks it is hilarious!!
You did better than me finding Joseph in 1841 Mandy, it must be him too with the 'waterman' connection! :-D Perhaps David can tell us more about what the Watermen did? Was it moving goods about or did they help dock the big boats and guide them about?
It had gone over my head about Mel having another thread with people looking for Lottie.......well it was a fortnight ago!! I just looked and found it and see they are behind us in finding Walter Douglas Cole at Bideford. :-)
It's funny Jane how names years later can become a bit 'naughty'!! One day in the future it might be our names that have 'connotations'. ;-)lol I bet your sister has been looking forward to staying with you for a few days. Is she still using a stick or has her knee improved enough to be without one now?
We tackled the blocked sink in the kitchen this morning............it WAS the tiny bit of lamb fat I poured down it that was the trouble.......set in a hard disc only about quarter of an inch thick. I can't understand why the boiling water, then sink unblocker gel didn't clear it. :-S OH said, 'Well that's taught you that you shouldn't be pouring any fat down there'. I said, 'No, what it's taught me is that I'm doing too much cooking!!!'. That made him laugh as I hardly do any these days ! The good thing is the cupboard underneath got a good clearout. I won't tell you how many packs of dishwasher cleaner and bottles of descaler I found. lol
Frank is the CROSS a tapestry that Ros is doing? Is the KNEELER done now?
OH was telling me the chap with the pony tail that went with him yesterday was a former priest. I was telling OH he might well be but needed a nosebag as he had made a right mess with crumbs off his cobs in the back of the car.

Maybe Ill live a life of regret Maybe Ill give much more than I get Nevertheless I'm in love with you X
A river man worked on the river ferrying cargo from A to B usually in a row boat or a sailing boat with oars latterly fitted out with a steam engine. They might get work offshore from port to port.
You can be sure they were strong to cope with the rowing.

Evening all,
Had another busy day still sorting the shed ,another trip to the tip!! we are slowly becoming regulars there :-D
Yes i had the Kindle Frank, son set me up with an Amaz*n account and i have managed to download a few books ,now i just have to find them on there and see how to find the page again after starting to read one !! :-S i just carn't seem to find the bit about how to use it now !!! i suppose i'll get the hang of it ,i mustn't let hubby see me pick up a book !!! LOL
Was it Maureen who had the CD's? is she away on holiday now ?
Hi to Janice ,hope you enjoy your days with Jane, are you both Lottie'd out yet LOL
I forgot all about the thread that Mel put on about Lottie too, so easy to get carried away looking and then not go back to check on it .
You wouldn't think a tiny bit of fat would block the sink like that Ann, i pour dribs and drabs down mine too , although i do try and run the hot tap and pour a little Fai*y down at the time . I tried one of those sink unblocker liquids , it didn't work , now if i think of it i just pour a few Soda Crystals down with hot water and leave over night .

Thats just what I was going to say Mandy. A few soda crystals and a drop of bleach and then a kettle of boiling water, soes the trick every time. Also you can clean the drains with a bucket of bleach soda and boiling or very hot water and it makes them smell nice for ages.
Have done mine like that for years.

I tried some bleach after the hot water to make sure any bugs were killed , but never thought of soda chrystals. I thought if the strong, unblocker stuff with all of it's 'precautions' wouldn't shift it then nothing would as I was sure it was food bits blocking it . Thanks for the soda chrystals tip in case it happens again, heaven forbid. OH reckons fixing it has done his shoulder in. The pipework goes up and around like a corkscrew with several joins as we moved the sink along the wall when the kitchen was altered.
Mandy, you will be on first name terms at the tip soon!! :-D I always find myself looking around to see what people have thrown away. At one time you could find some handy things to bring home with you that other people had thrown out, but around here the staff grab things that are any good and take them elsewhere, to be sold no doubt.
David your ancestors must have been very fit and strong, they would be loading and unloading as well as all the rowing.....out in all weathers too.
I must say I enjoyed the first of the Servants programmes on Friday. I recorded last night's to watch later, so am looking forward to that. Downton tonight too! We always record and start watching that a quarter of an hour after it starts so we can whizz through all the adverts.
We are up early tomorrow, OH to take his mum for her pre op check at the hospital and I am at the docs for my annual blood test and my first free flu jab, a needle for each arm I expect......oh the perks of getting older!!! lol. One of the city surgeries is going to have a doctor answer the phone for all appointments to see if people really need an appointment. The idea is to improve things as people are struggling badly to get appointments. I would worry a bit that some people might be put off even ringing if they felt they had to justify wanting an appointment first. :-S

X Factor on so i'm out of the way, back for DOWNTON
Yes Mandy, soda was always put in the washing up bowl, also went into our bath water. The old carbolic soap was a bit harsh on our skin.
Ros is forever lasting bleaching the sink and drains. When I do the outside drain, I use the bleach with boiling water.
I'm not sure who Jane passed the CDs onto. but i am sure if it was Maureen she will send them on to you.
Ann, The kneeler is fot the church. The vicar goes to about four churches. So she will take it with her for weddings. The Cross, when finished, I will try to get a photo. It's made of all different colour patches, Joseph' multi coloured dream coat type. from the centre of the ctoss, sun rays go out to each corner. I will also try to get a photo of the kneeler when thats finished.
Jane I hope your sister arrived safely, and you enjoy your few days together. Please give her my regards, as it seems we have heard so much about her, that we know her :-D :-D :-D
Hers something for you to get your teeth in, ANN, Mandy, and Mel. Who were the Father and mother of Christopher Bedford born 1804 in east London. Married to Betsey Farmer born about 1805. They married at St.Pauls Church Bermondsey on 11th January 1849. Also any info on Betsey.

Lol Frank. Well, just quickly before Downton comes on, the marriage record shows that Christopher Bedford was a batchelor and news vendor and his father was a Charles Bedford, gentleman. Betsy's father was Frederick Farmer, a news vendor :-D Thomas Fox and Samuel Chivers were witnesses.
Yes, please send some pics if you can when they are finished.

I'm confused now Frank!! Your Christopher Bedford must have married late in life at age 45 then? Can you say again what their dates of birth are?
This looks like them in 1851 census, but the dates of birth are wrong and this Betsey's maiden surname would be Fox as MIL is living with them and is a Fox, yet one of the witnesses on the marriage record is also Fox? I think maybe a fresh look tomorrow is called for.
