They were my school sheets Jane, and yes it was a bit shaming! As you can imagine our Matron wanted to know the reason why and wasn't at all amused when told. - (another lecture!) It had to the truth, because, as my mother later told me, she checked, as I knew she would! Fortunately my friend's were sympathetic!! like me, their mother's didn't take any prisoners!! I certainly remember 'sides to middle' collars and cuffs the same and leather on blazer elbows! skirts to 'grow into' and shoes the same. I had a very nice thick (it was very cold in winter with little or no heat) blanket covered in patchwork which hid the thinish bits!! It was an army blanket that had belonged to my uncle during the war, and been all over Europe after D.day! I think that it was expendable, if it got lost or damaged it wouldn't matter too much - a decent blanket would!! As I said, no prisoners!!! We were all certainly 'war children'.

Liz,
My Mother always said she would prefer to deal with a Thief than a liar. BECAUSE you could lock things away from a thief. !!! How very true
My Dad, As much as I loved him was a bit of a tea leaf when it came to the Family. He would get his hands on big white Navy issue Towels, wrap them round his waist and bring them home. We also had our beds nice and warm from the navy issue wollen blankets, how he got those home I never knew.!!! .
I was unfortunate to have to sleep three in a bed, Bill,Ted and myself. I was always put in the middle which I hated. I always got very hot (as I do even today) and would sleep on the "bolster" or a big winged armchair in the corner of the room for most of the night. I was 16 years old before I had a bed to myself.
One story I can tell you. My brother bill who was 7 years older than me. Came home very late one night, He climbed in throught the toilet window after putting the ladder up the back of the house (He would have been about 17.) He went back down stairs and put the ladder away, when he got into bed he pushed me onto the side he slept. Within a minute or so, in came my dad with BELT in hand and belted me across the backside, thinking it was bill. It was only when I screamed he realized it was me !!!! TOO LATE.
I know when I came out of the RAF in 1960. I went to the stores and BOUGHT some towels, They lasted years and years. Better than anything you could buy in civi street. and more like a bath sheet than a towel.
I didn't know you went to boarding school Liz, It must have been a wrench being away from the family.
Ended up not having milk Jane, thought better of it. just had a glass of water.
Jan phoned an hour ago to say she was picking Ros up to go and see the new baby. They have just left. Lara (the mum) is a bit worried, the baby isn't feeding.. I suppose the older mums will be able to advise her. Her mum is away working in Norwich. so can't be with her to help. The other grandma lives in Spain.
It looks like the best of the day has gone. Turned very cloudy now, and looks so much like RAIN AGAIN.!!!!
Just had another of these phone calls "Have you received your Grant" I said If I had every grant that has been offer by everyone that phones I would be a Millionarre. Now sod off and take my name off your list. and put the phone down. I just don't need these calls.

I totally agree with you Frank about prefering to deal with a thief than a liar, a liar you simply don't know where you are, at least with a thief you can take precautions! Yes, I went to boarding school when I was eleven till I was 17 1/2. As you know, I was an only child of a widowed mother, and I was VERY clingy during the four years we were on our own. I wasn't very academic and failed my 11 plus!!! SO, my mother decided that it would be better for me to go away to school - so off I went! having said that, the school I went to was a Convent only 25 miles away, so I was able to go home once a month for the w/end, with 150 pupils, 70 boarders and the rest day girls. At first I WAS very homesick, but after a while I settlled down, and did reasonably well on the academic front, and in fact I didn't mind it at all, bit of a love - hate relationship!! I know that it had been a very hard decision for my mother to take, as she told me years later she had a lot of doubts that she had done the right thing, nothing worse than leaving a weeping child!! Anyway it WAS the right thing, as it certainly taught me independence, to fight my own battles and severed that 'cord' a wee bit. My stepfather was brilliant, very supportive, while managing to keep a low profile, not an easy position to be in. We get those wretched phone calls too, telling us that we should be claiming for X insurance payments - I don't think so!! Anything we can claim for we've done long ago!! I just tell them to 'go away'! As it's usually a recorded mesage, it's probably a bit pointless!!

We had a phone call yesterday asking if we had had the grant for loft insulation. We had'nt so they are coming to do a survey in about a week and it is not going to cost us anything.
We also keep getting these people ring about a PPI insurance on a lone or mortgage. Neither of us have ever had a mortgage or a loan or credit cards!!!! When told that they soon say goodbye.
Come to think of it I have had a couple of phone calls lately and when I answer a recorded message says Goodbye!

Shirl you often used to see children carting things about on pram wheels when I was young. Always a guy too would be seated on a set of pram wheels and taken to a good spot for asking for a Penny fo the Guy. I used to do that in south woodford high st with my friends whose dad my mum worked for. They lived in Grove Road on the corner. Had some smashing times with that family. We used to go fishing at weekend to many places but I think urnt Mill at epping was a favorite and also Copped Hall. with the big old house that was falling down which us kids played in. Picked the roses out the rubble in the garden and looked inside the house which had no roof and trees growing inside it. It must have had lovely gardens at one time as there were steps and things like that and bits you could walk underneath. Always did blackberrying on these weekends too. Would come home with scratches all over our hands from the brimbles.

Evening all,
Alls well on the tummy front :-D :-D Have been drinking cold boiled water from the fridge. I think it's helped.
Had some dinner tonight. Roast leg of lamb, just got enough for the two of us. Roast pots and Veg. All washed up and put away.
Ros is SOAPING so I have come out of the way.
She said baby is fine, and Lara is coping allright.
Had another call tonight about insurance for SKY equipment. Again I was very polite and rang off.!!!!
Mel, I know exactly were you are talking about. I use to go to Covent Garden and buy box's of Daffs. for Mothers day and stand by the subway at Sth Woodford Station selling them. It earnt a few bob, for a night out. My BIL and sister lived in a flat in Grove road, before moving to Radio Rentals flat at Wanstead, he was an engineer and she worked in the office. SMALL WORLD.
Just about run out of Runner beans now. Ros bought some today. Far better than any I grew.
Nothing much on tele tonight, so I might take myself off to bed for a read. and an early night. I might even get a good nights sleep.

Sunny Morning All! :-D
A carload of OH's footie mates have just parked their car outside and gone with him to Workington. One chap about our age had a long ponytail, but was big built and looked well able to look after himself !! Now I have a day all to myself and am spoiled for choice what to do. :-D
Frank, I hope your meal sat well last night and that you feel a lot better today. At least when you are at home the 'white friend' is handy! It is good that Laura and the baby are both doing well.
Yesterday, the teacher at jewellery class and one of the other ladies were saying they had been ill and in hospital over the summer. The new lady was was ill after a chicken takeaway and was in intensive care for a few days and the bug had caused internal bleeding. The teacher had caught a cold from her family, but had breathing difficulties as well so was carted off to hospital where they found the virus had affected her heart.
She brought examples of all the things we will be making this term.......I LIKE!! :-D There are a couple of necklaces, quite 1920s looking or art deco which I love and we are doing one next week. It looks like there will be some needle and thread work with small beads, so I better get my specs well polished each week!! After all the promises we are still squeezed around the big table in the SMALL room .
We saw FIL and MIL yesterday afternoon. FIL says his back is doing well again now after the setback after lifting heavy bags. We were surprised to hear they took up all the (white) stones they have in a path across the lawn to wash and put back last week. I'm not sure that was really necessary or sensible to do, but there is no point saying anything.
I think I will nip out to the supermarket for a few things now and call in the garden centre down the road on the way back. Will catch up with the posts later...........>>>>>>>>>>>

Jane, I think the Bristol family I found with Charlotte Annie Maney must be the one. even though, as I said, her birth is a few years out. I have also now found the same Charlotte, but with the surname Money as a theatre attendant in Bristol in 1911 c. The same birth year, a few years out as before! There are enough things that seem to fit I think.
Edward John Maney, her father was born 1855. This appears to be him and the 'T' in his name could be a 'J' I think. Also BMD doesn't even show a middle name.
1891 census
Edward T Maney Age:35 Estimated Birth Year:abt 1856 Relation:Head Spouse's Name:Annie Maney Gender:Male Where born:Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Civil parish:Lambeth Ecclesiastical parish:St Peter County/Island:London Country:England Registration district:Lambeth Sub-registration district:Lambeth Church Second ED, institution, or vessel:34 Piece:397 Folio5 Page Number:6 Household Members: Name Age Edward T Maney 35 Annie Maney 27 Charlotte A Maney 6 Florence L Maney 2 Edward T Maney 2 Months View Original Record View original image
In 1871c yound Edward was an apprentice 'gold beater'!
Edward's father was John, but in 1861 the family surname is shown as MAYNEY. He was born in 1819 in Cornwell, Ireland and in 1861 was a tailor. His wife was also a Charlotte, so it looks like her grandaughter was named after her.
