Thanks Mandy that would be great! perhaps you could pm it to me. I think it's about to rain!!!

While I stand and do the ironing all sorts of funny things come into my head, today I was wondering if my great grandmother could be transported into my 21st century life she would probably think I was rich having a house all to myself, driving a car, cupboards stocked with food, wardrobes full of clothes. Wonder what she would of made of television, computers and telephones and she would have been horrified at the way I dress, always in trousers or jeans she would have said I dress like a man :-D

I agree Mandy, The Paradise was a bit slow but there's not much else on on a Tuesday, unlike tonight, thank goodness for ITV+1. Don't want to miss WDYTYA Or Mrs. Biggs so I can watch that at 10 pm.

Have a good time at the cinema Jane, anything with Meryl Streep in should be good.

Liz , have pm'd you.

Maureen i wonder too some times what they would have thought of all the mod cons we have today , when you think how hard they had to worked , all things electrical would have frightened them to death !!

When you think how we can sit here talking and the washing is going round in the machine , where as the washing took them all day !!!
We get the hover out ,they had the broom ,dustpan and brush!!
And we think we work hard !!
:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Maureen Report 26 Sep 2012 14:34

And don't you wonder if we could come back 150 years or so later what we would find. Seems hard to imagine how much more changes there could be but then they must have thought that in the 19th century. Life has certainly moved on for the better for us.

LilyL

LilyL Report 26 Sep 2012 15:07

And how! think of going to the dentist 100 years ago!!! before then probably a tooth puller - oh dear!!! I was thinking yesterday, the fact that nothing changed very much for hundred's of years, and then really from the end of the first war, EVERTHING changed so quickly, health, transport, air travel, housing, you name it! people from the 12th cent would have recognised a lot of society if they'd come back in the 15th cent; but anyone from the 17thcent wouldn't even begin to recognise society today, it's all changed out of all recognition in the same period of time. I just wonder why it took so long and then happened so quickly!! My Step-Grandfather was born in 1888 and died in 1980, the changes he must have seen!!! amazing.

Maureen

Maureen Report 26 Sep 2012 15:49

Don't know when electricity was invented but I would bet a whole lot of changes came about from that. Your step-grandfather lived to a ripe old age Liz.

LilyL

LilyL Report 26 Sep 2012 16:12

He did Maureen!! they were a long living family, (both sides!) his sister lived into her 90's and two brother's well into their 80's! My stepfather only made 67 (a youngster in that family!) but he died of Cancer; I think 4 years as a guest of the Japanese had undermined his health (as well as a lifetime of smoking), - what an awful business that was, our parent's/Grandparents generation certainly suffered badly from both those wars . Again we have been so lucky!!! I think you're right about electricity, it was 'invented' in the 1880's(I think) and it was after that everything changed.

Jane Report 26 Sep 2012 16:25

Well that was a kind of strange film.I did enjoy it .I'm sure it is so true for so many couples being married for so long (when everything gets rather forgotten in the bedroom department)and how difficult it is to (light the fire ;-) again).I thought it was dragged out somewhat.I'm more used to seeing Meryl Streep in something with a bit more oomph.

Mel I thought Fitz wasn't quite himself today. He is still getting a lot of painy/burning feeling from where his Kidney was removed.I just hope it is still the healing process ,maybe adhesions that are causing the discomfort. He will get his scan results sometime in October.I think he is getting himself worked into a bit of a tizzy.

I am so glad I live in this century and not the last.I don't like hard housework.Think I would have got myself a maid if I could have afforded one :-D

Not good news from James today........He text me to say that he will be made redundant :-S :-S. 70 /80%of staff will be loosing their jobs.He said he will either work until the end of October or if lucky up until Xmas.Poor lad.Just as he was getting going.

One bit of good news was though I have succeeded in getting that refund back from the company who supplied the first plumbers for the leak. You may remember they had £315 deposit from us and then then said it was non refundable when I asked for it back.I feel quite pleased with myself now for pursuing it. :-D :-D

Maureen

Maureen Report 26 Sep 2012 16:56

What a shame for James, back to the drawing board, still at least he can say he has some work experience now. Well done getting your deposit back sometimes it pays to make a fuss.

Does anyone know how to delete a book from the Kindle, I've pressed every button and still can't find anything which will let me delete. Don't want to keep books on there that I've read.

Jane

Jane Report 26 Sep 2012 17:11

Maureen ,I don't know how to do that either.I just have to put books I have read into the Archive thingy.
James has just got home.(down in the mouth). He is hoping that he will be ok until Christmas(but who knows). His Boss sounds great and has promised to give him a great reference when he needs one.

The sky is looking very iffy here.Maybe a bit stormy :-S

have we heard from Frank since he has been up ladders this morning?????

I think tonight there is a programme on about the testing of Ecstasy and the effect on the brain.Prof Nutt is the chap who is doing this.He was the one sacked by the Government a few years back.Hannah has met him several times (through her work) and says he is an amazing man.She is hoping that he will be her Mentor while she is in her Research Job.I know he is a bit controversial but he is the top in his field .So I hope he agrees to Mentor her.

I thought The Paradise was a bit slow too ,but will keep watching.i think a lot of us thought Downton was slow when it first started too, and now most people really enjoy it. :-D

Maureen

Maureen Report 26 Sep 2012 17:16

I've been lucky here, quite windy but we've had no storms and no rain today. I've said it now .......

I've been watching The Food Hospital, it's really interesting and amazing how eating or cutting out certain foods dramatically changes the patients illnesses.

Why was the professor sacked Jane. Where's the Archive thingy Jane.

LilyL

LilyL Report 26 Sep 2012 17:22

Oh dear Jane, what bad luck for James, lets hope he is able to stay till Xmas, but at least he will have had work experience and a good reference. Yes Maureen, I've managed to delete from my kindle!! Go to your list of books, scroll down to the one you want to get rid of, press the right side of the square at the bottom, which will take you to the title of the book.scroll down the list to 'removed from device, then press the middle of the square and hey presto, it will be no more!!

Jane

Jane Report 26 Sep 2012 17:22

Maureen he was sacked because the Government didn't agree with his proposals to do with declassifying certain drugs(I think) I'm not sure exactly. But if you google his name it will come up.
I don't know what to press to find Archive on the Kindle but it is there.Maybe 'Settings'
I still have to ask Chris sometimes to help me out lol

Maureen

Maureen Report 26 Sep 2012 17:26

Jane

Jane Report 26 Sep 2012 17:43

ooh thanks Liz I will try that too.I have a whole bunch of books in Archives lol(that I don't want to keep)
Yes at least James has got some work experience now and he won't be loosing his job by his own choice. His Boss sounds a good chap and will do his best for him .

Come Dine with me now :-D I just love this programme.

HERE I AM, No broken limbs, and I didn't fall of the big step ladder. Tottered a few times, but managed to hang on.There is about eight branches on the apple tree that I can't reach. Next door neighbour will do that for me at weekend I HOPE.

You have been busy chatting today. It's nice to see Liz so active !!!

Sorry about. I know my Dad use to tell us stories of when he was a boy in the 1890s James's job. Will he start looking straight away or wait to see what happens.??

I often think about how things must have been last Century

Rverything has gone Ti#s up with my posting. You will have to read it the best you can, I'm not deleting that lot. !!

Need to look at dinner.

Got the gist Frank lol
James said he will start looking next week for jobs.He dreads the thought of having to go back on Job Seekers :-S :-S :-S

Hannah did something yesterday for research. She got paid£100 :-D.She spent an hour in an MRI Scanner.Had ear plugs and headphones. There was a screen that she had to look into and had to press a button when she saw certain things pop up.It was to show how her brain reacted. She said she felt very claustrophobic to start off and had the button to press to get her out.But she coped. She has asked for a copy of her brain scan pics.

The Paradise is written by the same person who did Larkrise To Candleford so it should warm up a bit soon. Laura from Larkrise is in it next week and we had Fisher Bloom and Minnie is the last one.

Hav'nt caught up with all your posts yet but I have to go up the tunnel and water. Oh has just gone ringing so I am home alone...... :-D :-D :-D

Annx Report 26 Sep 2012 20:09

Evening All,

It's hard to catch up on here when you don't pop in for a day or two!! Mel, I'll pop round......I'm home alone too. OH is clerking at Great Glen.

We were disappointed with that film too Jane, we thought there would be much more comedy in view of the subject. I found everything picked up in the bedroom after 20 years of marriage when I met my present OH. Then living at different addresses 12 miles apart for 10 years kept the flames smouldering...... Routine can quickly become a rut.

A shame James will be losing his job, but at least it isn't his 'dream' job and he has work experience and will get a good reference. He's better placed than when he was looking before and will be more attractive to a prospective employer. He should carefully update his CV now, listing all the skills and experience he has gained that will be useful to a future employer. I think OH may be in the same boat with some of his work if services are withdrawn due to spending cuts.

On Sunday we were stunned that the Ryton Gardons had closed their quite renowned restaurant and replaced it with a tiny, ordinary cafe. Then as we passed through villages on the way back we saw more than one pub that had closed down.

We have had a blocked kitchen sink since yesterday. :-S I have a feeling a few of the many beans I have been cooking lately might have caused it, but I had poured a tiny bit of fat down off some lamb chops yesterday, so thought it might be that. I tried kettles of boiling water, no good, then a plunger, but that's tricky as the sink has 2 plugholes!! Today I tried some sink unblocker, but that hasn't worked either, so I think OH may have to roll his sleeves up tomorrow! :-S He will have to be careful and wear rubber gloves as the caustic stuff I used will be down the pipe. I hope it isn't too far down as the pipe goes into the cavity wall and underneath the conservatory floor somewhere......no outside drain. I don't want my new tiles digging up like Jane!! :-0
