Evening everyone,

What a difference in the weather ,its really mild out there this evening .

Mel, have a lovely evening ,although you've probably gone by now .

Had problems with the lap top , had a thing come up telling me it was infected !!! had to get son to sort it for me , seems ok now .

Been shopping with DIL this afternoon , got loads more bits ,just got the fresh stuff to get now .
Have been a bit worried about DIL, she has been feeling quite rough lately ,and on monday she nearly passed out , it was a good thing her sister was with her ,they were in town and she went down on her knees as she felt bad , she rested for a while then walked home , i don't think she has been eating properly ,she gets food in front of her then she doesn't fancy it !! and she's been busy sorting things out for christmas day ,we're going and her parents and her sister ,so she's catering for ten people , Katie keeps waking in the night too so that doesn't help ,she so tired, son has been home with her today ,gave her a little rest .

David , A Very Happy Christmas to you and Ellen :-) :-) and all the best for the new year :-) :-)

William , nice to see you again , Happy Christmas :-) :-) :-) we wondered how things were with you :-)

Pat ,I bet you will have a great Xmas with all your family.Busy Busy Busy!!!!!

Just heard it was 23 years ago today the Lockerbie Disaster. My Aunty and Uncle lived through that dreadful time (thank heavens) ,but sadly they lost some friends whose house was wiped out .I remember trying desperately trying to ring my Aunty and Uncle ,but all the phone lines were down.It was many hours later after another Uncle of mine had walked miles to get to them that I knew they were safe.I can't believe it is 23 years.

Well folks I am away to bed now.Chester has been out for his last 'business'.James has gone off in my car"Boo Hoo" .I hope he and my car arrive home safely on Saturday.

Night Night xx

Nice you dropped in William........of course we remembered and missed you.......and your memories! I hope your wife recovered well from her operation. A hug and kiss will do fine for me and I would also like to wish you and your wife all the best and a...........

:-) :-)MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY, HEALTHY 2012 :-) :-)

Please keep in touch when you can.

Jane, I think if MIL was Chris's patient he might be thinking of an earlier retirement date!!! lol. :-0

Mandy, your DIL has taken on rather a lot hasn't she, especially with 3 young children too. She needs to take care of herself and get plenty of rest or she won't enjoy the day. I've never catered for more than 9 on Xmas Day and that was about 100 years ago and I was shattered by bedtime!!! lol

I hope Mel enjoyed her Ringers meal tonight......no doubt she will tell us what tasty goodies she had to eat.

Frank you are a STAR getting all that done!!! It will save a lot of time tomorrow.

OH went to bed for a couple of hours this afternoon. He was feeling very tired and hot with all the coughing, didn't sleep well last night, but he's perked up again.....at least he is eating like a horse. :-D Tomorrow he has an eye test booked and is also booked in to get his side light fixed. I might take his car for him if he looks sorry for himself!!

I better be off to bed if I'm to be up early to get those brussels etc and I've forgotten to get sausage rolls........night night xx

Christmas's remembered

Hi again folks, nice to be back amongst friends. This website is about family history - and it sure promotes a sense of building a 'new family'.
Anyway, I digress. I thought I'd just share some of my Christmas memories with you.
Going back to my '1940's childhood, you knew it was Christmas in our house when my Mum bought the EAT ME dates! I'll never know why she did this as none of us liked these sticky brown things that looked far too neat and as if someone had freshly varnished them. They hung around until about March, when they fanilly disappeared.
Dad always made sure that we had that most unlikely of nuts - chestnuts. Let's face it, you couldn't eat them unless they were roasted, which means I guess, that they were 'seasonal'. We had one of these metal shelf-on-legs devices that you could push up against an open fire to warm a kettle or such. We would cross-cut the chestnuts with a sharp knife and place them on the 'shelf', up close to the roaring fire. Then we'd sit back and watch the skins peel back. Finally, bouncing the blistering nuts in our fingers, we'd peel the skins off, dig out the 'bits' from the many wrinkles and chew away. Thinking back, the taste was in the first bites, from then on it it was a bit like chewing pulped cardboard! This would then result in needing a drink to wash them down. If I'd been good and Dad was in a festive mood - I'd be allowed a small glass of EMVA cream sherry or a drop of port wine.
It was a bit of a cash-strapped time for Santa, not that there were many kids things to buy, but my brother and I were more than content with anything we got.
Happy, simple days . . . . .
William

Hi William and all,

My memories of Christmases past are :-

Parties and family get togethers where the adults would reminise about the old days and we would put the old records on and have a sing song. Its my birthday on Christmas Eve so Christmas was always extra special to me.

I would always have a party for my birthday, does anybody remember the game 'aeroplane' well we always played that (actually come to think of it it might just of been a game that my Mum and Dad made up) I have a brother and sister and they would always be around at Christmas time. Christmas morning we had presents in a pillow case and we would open our presents (Father Christmas had been during the night).

I remember the old christmasas with great fondness.

I am really enjoying reading all these threads.

Regards
:-) :-)

Morning William .How nice to have to back with us.
I cooked some chestnuts a couple of days ago in the oven .They were pretty disgusting and ended up in the bin :-S To be truthful I didn't really know how to cook them so I think they weren't done long enough.
I like dates ,but no-ne else seems to so I don't usually bother getting them these days. But now we are talking about them I think I will get a box when I go into town later :-D.Just for me :-D :-D
knowing what to do with the stones ,horrible sticky things lol.One thing we always had was those Petit Fours (sp)??I haven't any of those either so I better see what I can do about that too.

Now I am going to wrap a few pressies for James and have a coffee.I think Chris must still be stuck in Waitr*** .He got there at 8.15 and rang me to say it was heaving !!!!!

I still buy dates at Christmas William. Eat Me if I can get them but this year I have'nt seen them. This year my box reads Date Me!! They are nice though as I got the greengrocer to open the box for me to have a look. Mum used to do stuffed dates at Christmas. They are lovely. She would take out all the stones and pop almonds in each one and then roll them in desicated coconut. Also always had a pack of figs which were all lined up in the pack. Got very sticky fingers trying to seperate them to find the stalk to use as a handle to hold them whilst eating. Another thing mum used to buy was Chinese Figs which cmae in a hexaganal (SP) box and were covered in sugar. I looked for those this year but did'nt find those either. Mind you I have'nt been out on my own for a rummage around the shops. I too always had a very small glass of port with my Christmas dinner when young. Dad did'nt drink but he would have a glass of Stones ginger wine or if mum could'nt find that one it would be Crabbies Green Ginger Wine. I would also be given a little glass with a handle on the side sometimes with my port. My nan who we lived with would always tell me it was a wishing cup. It was pressed glass with tiny ridges all the way down the sides and on a short stem and the top rim was covered in silver. I still have it somewhere and now coming to think of it it could be a sylibub glass.

Being an only child I remember going to bed and waking up in the morning and the whole house would be decorated with coloured balls and bells and paper concertina chains criss crossing the ceilings. Such colour and I would be told that the Fairies had done it in the night ready for Christmas. We always had a tree that reached the ceiling and sometimes dad had to cut the topp off a bit to get the fairy on the top. Same fairy every year who would be packed away in a shoe box in black tissue paper. Her wings were made ou tof the gold paper from grandads 2oz tin of tabacco, it had like little diamonds printed into it.

An uncle bought me a set of fairy lights and they would go on the tree each year too. They were coloured bakerlight and they had nursery rymne characters on them, the one I remember was the cow jumping over the moon and it was on the pale blue shade. Always had cotton wool snow on the tree too and plenty of silver tinsel and coloured glass baubles. I loved to lay under the tree and smell the pine. It was like a little den for me. It would also be wedged into an empty Snowcem tin which mum would cover in red crepe paper with a big green bow around it also in crepe. I did this for my son when he was small too.
