Late again.

Been watering the tunnel and I have to go back up there this afternoon and tie up all the tom plants and potato plants. My beans are about an inch long now. I took a pic!!

Mandy you writing Grandad Frank brought it all back to me. My dad was always Grandad Frank and my grandad was grandad Beech. Hubbies dad was just grandad.

Who was St. Swithin?

St. Swithin (or more properly, Swithun) was a Saxon Bishop of Winchester. He was born in the kingdom of Wessex and educated in its capital, Winchester. He was famous for charitable gifts and building churches.

Why do people watch the weather on St. Swithin's day?

A legend says that as the Bishop lay on his deathbed, he asked to be buried out of doors, where he would be trodden on and rained on. For nine years, his wishes were followed, but then, the monks of Winchester attempted to remove his remains to a splendid shrine inside the cathedral on 15 July 971. According to legend there was a heavy rain storm either during the ceremony or on its anniversary.

This led to the old wives' tale (folklore) that if it rains on St Swithin's Day (July 15th), it will rain for the next 40 days in succession, and a fine 15th July will be followed by 40 days of fine weather.

What symbols are associated with St. Swithins?

The emblems of St. Swithin refer to the legend of the forty days' rain (raindrops) and the apples from the trees he planted.

Apple growers ask St. Swithin for his blessing each year because they believe:
•Rain on St. Swithin's day 'blesses and christens the apples'.
•No apple should picked or eaten before July 15th.
•Apples still growing at St Swithin's day will ripen fully.

Mel, that was interesting and something I never knew about St Swithins.

Mandy after FIL refusing to change his 20 year old car because he was used to it, then after getting the little car, he decided it was the best thing since sliced bread! Now of course he wants one just the same as that!! :-S We are waiting a week before we do anything about another car for them as they are liable to change their minds but not ring to let us know!

I popped out this afternoon and although there are no floods near the river down the road, a few miles further on the fields were covered in water and had caused a little brook across the road! I felt so sorry for the farmers after seeing a cornfield knee deep in water........up to the ears you might say! All that work and ruined by the rain.

Maureen's put me in the mood for paperwork..........a sort out next I think and get some quotes for my car insurance. Mind you I got a nice necklace kit with some of my birthday money and that sounds much more interesting to do. ;-)

I do hope Fiona is ok......those headaches seemed to be going on a long time.

Jane, I can't believe you thought St Swithin's Day was the 14th! I always remember because it's my birthday (hint hint), my mothers birthday was St Patrick's Day and my borther in law (who is Irish) his birthday is St George's Day. My late step-son's birthday was also Shakespeare's birthday, and of course Shakespeare also died on the date of his birth.

Lovely sunny day here ,bit of cloud about but its warm in the sun.
