Berona Report 28 Nov 2010 21:24

Good evening/morning everyone. Heavens!! minus fourteen???? How do you manage to get out of bed?

It has rained where I am, although I think Sue is getting it heavier than I am. Nothing at the moment, but outside is still wet. No blue in the sky, and more rain forecast. The overnight temperature can get down to minus 4 here in mid-winter - and we think that's cold.

How do the birds get to drink water if everything is frozen?

Good Morning Berona,

Sorry to hear that it's raining on you too, time you had better weather.

It is hard to get out of bed in this weather - not far away last night was minus 23, but only minus 18 C here.

I poured boiling water on the birds drinking bowl four times today, and filled with fresh water, they all take a drink while they can. One stupid bird was even taking a bath.

Thank goodness for that woolly nightcap you knitted me, I would perish without it lol.

Tec......9-33pm.

Hi Berona. I know the rain is good for the gardens but the grey skies and constant rain is so depressing. Even worse when you have to go out on the roads. People seem to go silly in bad weather.

Good morning Sue and Berona, good evening Tec

You are kinder than me Tec, I do keep my birdbath topped up with water, but I don't defrost it. That would mean walking right around the house to the back garden and I am not that brave. The birds are decimated in a very cold winter Berona, sad but nature I am afraid

Berona

Berona Report 28 Nov 2010 21:46

Tec - so pleased to hear that. Would you like me to knit a pair of socks to match?

People do daft things in the cold, I have just been playing spacial games with an estate car and our bedroom furniture.

We did order some new bedroom furniture and we had it especially stained to match the wooden wardrobes which cover one wall. The chap who stained it happens to live near us, so he wanted to deliver it this morning. I put the old stuff on freecycle (two chests of drawers and a bedside cabinet). i have been inundated by people wanting it,so I chose one and they were so keen they wanted to come tonight. OH and the chap were messing about trying to get it into the estate car, I thought about it, made a suggestion and hey presto, it went in. The chap went off happily and it is out of our way

Excuse me Berona, it was my feet which were cold last night not Tec's. I could do with some nice fluffy pink bed socks

Good evening Linda. I'm no expert, but I did read that birds tend to wait until they are desperate for a drink before they go to where they know they will get one and because of this, people who provide water for them should make sure it is always available, because if they arrive at their 'known' drinking place and water is not available, they can quickly die flying around looking for water.
Perhaps your birds can get enough moisture out of what they eat (wet leaves, etc). There must be some way for them to get moisture, or they would surely migrate to warmer surroundings?

Hmm,I had better qualify my last statement, of course as Tec lives at the far end of the country, I wouldn't know if he had cold feet lol

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 28 Nov 2010 21:54

Good Evening Linda,

I make a point of feeding the birds every day - I buy a big sack of wild bird seed, they seem to wait for me every morning and I feel that they have come to rely on me now. I have a pair of doves that sit on an arch looking straight in the kitchen window every morning when I open the blinds.
I can't imagine my garden without birds in it.

Tec........9-53pm

Linda - I wasn't eluding to anyone's cold feet - I just thought a matching pair of socks might go well with the night cap I knitted for Tec. It is pastel blue. I'll have to see if I have any pretty pink wool.

Berona I would love you to knit some bed socks - could you possibly make them knee length? with multi coloured circles - that would be great.

Linda, My feet have been frozen for days - they never get warm in this weather.

Tec..............10pm.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 28 Nov 2010 22:02

That would be really kind of you Berona, I shall look forward to their arrival, but as Tec is older (lol) perhaps you had better knit his first

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 28 Nov 2010 22:05

I don't knit. I sew and do crafty things but knitting and crochet is something I've never got into.

I may be more geriatric than you Linda, but Berona isn't that slow at knitting, so I am rather hoping to last for as long as it takes her to knit them. :))

Tec.......10-06pm.

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 28 Nov 2010 22:08

I wouldn't say you were crafty Sue :))

You wouldn't Tec? Someone said the other day that I can be very crafty. Do you think that was a compliment?
