Yes it's me again, having a blonde day. I have one ancestor I found that I am trying to build on. I've found him being born in Leyton, Essex that's through the 1891 census. When I look for him in births I cannot find him but find the same name but being born in West Ham. Can anyone please tell me if this district or whatever you call it is one in the same or is there somewhere in the future if I come across this type of thing again I can check on parishes, districts etc to see if they are one in the same.

Regards

Kathryn

Thank you Thelma, so I deduce from that list that Leyton and West Ham are one in the same or am I wrong? I will keep that list safe for any future reference.

Kathryn I might be wrong (I often am) but I think that's say Walter was born Leyton and living in Fulham. x

Elizabeth2469049 Report 7 Jun 2012 19:31

I think - not sure! - that the registration district refers to the district where the census took place, That wouldn't necessarily be the same as the birthplace. Leyton isn't so very far from West Ham - certainly not in Essex - but the census taker could have got it wrong. What is the address for your 1891 census?

Kathryn

Kathryn Report 7 Jun 2012 19:31

Hi Lesley you may well be right, although I have been researching for sometime there is a lot I still don't know. Anyhow I still can't find a birth for Walter. The only one I found was in the third quarter in 1882 and that gives West Ham.

Kind regards

You need to understand parish, registration district, county, on census's relate to where the person was on the date the census was taken, and not where that person was born,

Kay????

Kay???? Report 7 Jun 2012 19:37

They were living in Fulham on 1891 census,,,

West Ham was possibly the overall registration district Leyton was possibly one place they had lived when Walter was a baby and 8 years down the line with more children mistakes were made

although Leyton would have come under Hackney,,

Hi again, thank you for that but call me thick then why does it say on the census he was born in Leyton? The birth Roy has given is the only one I found but was searching for a birth in Leyton. Must get to grips with this thing.

Kind regards

Kathryn Leyton is only about 3 miles from West Ham so probably Walter was born Leyton and birth registered in West Ham. x

Kathryn

Kathryn Report 7 Jun 2012 20:24

Hiya, I have a copy of his marriage cert. He married on 16 November 1901 in the registration district of Islington and his address is given as 44 Charteris Road which I believe is in North London as well and he has given his age as 20. Do you see where I was getting confused, not hard for me. In 1905 he has a daughter and he is at an address in Hendon but can find no sign of him with his wife Marie Adele Day nee Noel in the 1911 census. Not sure about him, he just seems to disappear. Perhaps I shouldn't be posting all this on this thread as it is supposed to be a general chat but somehow I've got carried away.

Kind regards

Kathryn

Have you found his parents in the 1881 to see if they lived in the west ham district then?

have you found his parents marriage?

Roy

also, did mum go to stay with family whilst giving birth?
