Breaking news from USA president Obama has announced Osama Bin Laden has been killed
No other details as yet wonder if it is so or just wishful thinking

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 2 May 2011 05:30

It's all confirmed. I'm sure google news has nothing but, at the moment.

For that, I missed the last 20 minutes of Brothers and Sisters. (Okay, Brothers and Sisters is so bad that no Canadian station carries it any more, but I suppose the signal would have been cut anyway.)

Most unfortunate that Obama chose to announce this tonight.

We have a national election in Canada on Monday, and sometime in the next few minutes the vile and horrible Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be making some sort of speech in his capacity as PM (which of course is perfectly right and proper). Even the tiny fraction of an edge this could give him by influencing only a few votes could make a huge difference in the outcome of this unbelievably tight election.

Justice has been done apparently. Sounds a little bit more like revenge and I can't see it's much to celebrate however you look at it - hardly likely that it will lessen hostilities or that there's no-one to step up. Still, I have no sympathy for him.

SueMaid Report 2 May 2011 08:23

As I said to you before Tan - I'm happy to see justice done and I have no sympathy with the man but I can't in all honesty feel joy at the death of a man.

I'll not be shedding any tears over him either.

I'm just concerned about the reprisals..x

' ....... and they all lived happily ever after ......'

An ending to many a child's bedtime fairy tale.

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 2 May 2011 09:08

We surely can't imagine that this man was a representative of the Islam religion - he was a terrorist. No one is arguing that the man should have been allowed to get away with his shameful crimes but amid all the joyous celebrations has anyone apart from Muffy thought about the reprisals that are sure to come.

I've thought about reprisals Sue.

End July were getting on a plane to Florida for 3 weeks.

Security is tight anyhow, but I can see it getting tighter which is some what comforting. My concern is when were there. in Disney or Universal. 1000s of people in one place there will be the temptation for a jobby lot.

Trying not to think of the consequences. All I know is, a work colleague was in Disney on 911, and they evacuated all the parks immediately just in case.

Im sure the already tight security (bag checks etc) will now be tighter in such places. It wont take the risk fully away but it will help.

Rita - "I think people who have lost family through this wicked man may be feeling different to you" I don't understand what you mean. I agree that he was an evil man and that he deserved what he got. All I'm saying is that I can't feel joy at the death of another person - satisfaction that justice has been done, relief that an evil man has been removed but not joy.

I am disgusted that the implication is that I am saddened in any way by his death or that he should have been allowed to carry on the way he was.

I respect anyone's choice to follow their religion in peace. I have my own beliefs & am happy with them.

Religion is flawed tho, many people live by their religions teachings, which is fine, but many focus on small parts of text & put their own stance on them to suit themselves

for example

"An eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" (often used to justify retaliation by death to avenge someone else's death)

in the next breath

"Thou shalt not kill" (Its wrong to kill, don't do it ! )

A religious lady I used to work with used the former to justify the death of an innocent PC in the Tottenham riots.
When I brought up the latter phrase, she changed the subject & walked away.

Osama twisted parts of the Islamic religion to justify his actions as being right., just like my colleague did.

Islam is a peaceful loving religion, as many others are. Its those who are twisted in the first place who place justification for the evil they commit, and Bin Laden was one of them.

May he now be with his God, and thank God he's not still with mortal man

"I think in all honesty we have to live life for today and not allow our daily lives to be further affected. Whilst we all need to be vigilent there are people who are employed to do this."

You're absolutely right Joanne.

We will all look forward to our jollies & have a great time @ The House Of Mouse x

You do that Mildred - if we all stay at home because of fear then the terrorists have done what they set out to do.

We travelled to Florida on 2 October 2001. Airport security was horrendous but necessary. I think that in the intervening years security has tightened up much more so the increase should be barely necessary. And the same for the theme parks, you are probably safer there than anywhere else. Hope you have a fabulous time.

But what I find difficult are my own feelings on the matter. e.g. when flying if an obviously Moslem man sits next to me I feel a bit apprehensive. And I have Moslems in my own family. It is a fear i dislike.

great mayby our troops can come home now there families must be extatic, why should he live after vwhat he has done, how would u feelif it was your relative hed killed imho of course.

Rambling Report 2 May 2011 10:46

If I (personally) had lost family due to him, I would not be celebrating his death. I would want him to live in a prison of his own making, till every day felt like a year & every year a lifetime, till every step was crippled with age, till there was nothing left of life, ...you get the drift, that is my idea of a life for a life, death is too easy, unless one believes in hell? ...but if there isn't a 'life after death', then he has 'got away with it' .

Not read the details, but the last thing needed is anyone who could be seen as a 'martyr to the cause', and that cause is not Islam. Any religion and no religion breeds evil men...if there were no religion there would still be wars and terrorism, it would only be the 'justification' that would be different (imo).

ladylol

ladylol Report 2 May 2011 10:55

i think from a prison he could be treated like a god it could be fixed that way he could also still give orders to kill, i agree this could happen anyway but the fact he is dead he cant enjoy anything ever.

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 2 May 2011 11:15

"why should he live after vwhat he has done, how would u feelif it was your relative hed killed imho of course". Who is that directed at LFP? No me I hope.

Rita - I know how it feels to be indirectly affected by him. My son was in the Defence Force based on an Airforce Base at the time. He was restricted to base and on red alert. It was frightening for us as we couldn't speak to him for over a week.

I repeat - I have no sympathy for Bin Laden.

Joanne - I share the opinion of everyone on this thread. I just don't feel I can rejoice at the death of anyone - even someone evil.

I know what you meant Sue...you find the celebrations distasteful.

I do too and it's also not out of compassion in my case...it's out of concern that such actions are likely to ignite an already unstable situation even more !! x
