Well all I would say that everyone was very happy when Hitler died. As for IRA in any disguise Rose, they never go away , lie low for a while and then return with a vengence. History books prove it and since so-called peace came - there have still been bombs and killings - news that never makes it to the National News.

I feel nothing wrt Bin Laden's death but I too find the celebrations distasteful. His death will not make a difference, someone else will step up and take his place and carry on with what he has/had planned.

At the risk of getting shot at...I think back to when the IRA were causing mayhem in NI and UK, ( my Irish roots are pretty strong so I was always 'aware' of both sides) ,

Nope, imo, though all of the above were relevant, it was the mindset of the Irish people who said enough is enough. We are repelled by the slaughter of innocents ( eg Omagh bombing) We want peace and security and a different life style for ALL of us, who then contributed to finding local and political solutions.

What I'm trying to say ( in a very poor fashion) is that you can't defeat terrorism by taking out one or many of them, only by changing their breeding ground so they are no longer welcome there either, so that their 'cause' is seen to be counter productive to the well being of their potential supporters.

I'd already used "distasteful" to describe a related phenomenon -- people making wisecracks about Muslim afterlife beliefs -- so I went with "unseemly" to describe the gleeful crowds on the streets of US cities. ;)

In practical terms, yes indeed, these displays are simply unwise.

But also in ethical terms, they are distasteful. No one has any obligation to mourn the death of anyone at all. But celebrating it is a step farther than not mourning.

Whatever ... why on earth would you suggst that Obama's "justice" is relevant to what was done by the US, or to what anyone might think of what the US did? If it was, I think you might find you'd have to excuse the attack on the Twin Towers.

We judge our own actions by our standards.

By our standards, no one is to be killed unless there is no reasonable alternative, in order to prevent some worse thing.

That may well have been the case for the killing of Obama; we don't have enough facts to say (and we may never have).


Taking private pleasure in someone's death is understandable, and something most of us will do at one time or another.

A public celebration of someone's death is an extraordinary thing, and something not to be undertaken lightly.

Our fundamental human value is the belief in the simple humanity of every human being. If we agree to treat anyone as if they did not share that humanity, we have embarked on a very slippery slope.

I do too and it's also not out of compassion in my case...it's out of concern that such actions are likely to ignite an already unstable situation even more !! x
