itchy flakey scalp? I have tried t-gel and anti-dandruff shampoos but to no avail. occasionally drench hair in olive oil for the night but its so messy and takes 3 washes to remove! Just to get some relief from the itching would be great . i have been to the doctor but she was more interested in sorting out my back....thank you in advance,
sueby doo x

I wonder if perhaps an essential oil like lavender or TeaTree might help?

Perhaps adding a few drops to a rinse after washing your hair might help.

I just did a search and found this

Recent research published in Aromatherapy Today, the International Aromatherapy Journal, indicates that Tea tree oil, added to shampoo in a 5% dilution, is at least as effective as 2% ketoconazole and 1% terbinafine in the treatment of dandruff. In the test, the subjects used a 5% dilution in a daily shampoo, and left the shampoo in their hair for three minutes before rinsing.

I've used essential oils for a few things and found them good.

The anti dandruff shampoos vary and it might be worth trying different ones.

I know someone who finds Nizorelle very good.

I use Nizoral (comes in a red box) which is very good - but not to be confused with Nizorelle which I personally didn't find as effective.

I think Contrary Mary is right... That's the one.

I remember one of our girls bought the wrong one last time, .... and that's the name I went and checked in the bathroom.

I did the same thing Gwyn, bought the wrong one that's how I know it's not as good as the Nizoral :-)))) Easily done though when the names are almost the same.

Try an organic shampoo? I dont believe any of the chemicals that go into the usual shampoos and conditions can be good for anyone - apart from the makers pockets, of course. lol

I wouldnt recomment the Jason range but have found Avalon shampoo very good.

Head and shoulders gives me dandruff big time. Anything with Lavendar makes me itch and tea tree products give me flaky scalp. I'vre been using the Boots own brand anti dandruff with conditioner which works a treat.
As for a bad attack of dandruff nothing beats Selsun, but it costs an arm and a leg. I have found that for mild attacks with an itchy scalp soluble aspirin can help (I kid you not)

Dear sueby.
Do you or have you always suffered with dry flaky scalp,
It could be that you have dermatitis of the scalp,
or that you are not suited to the shampoo that you use.
a tip, when washing hair use a mild shampoo, with warm to warmer water, shampoo it twice, then rinse as much as you can, till it squeeks then put on conditioner, on ends mainly, then rinse after a couple of mins, but as you rinse, turn the temperature of the water down, to cool, this kills all the soap residue...
some women suffer from this during menopause...
It is always a good thing to let your hair get naturally greasy from time to time, or as often as you can, it conditions the hair, and when you do wash it, it is much softer...

have you tried Nizoral shampoo? My OH gets itchy head and uses that. Head& Shoulders always works for me.

Make sure you always rinse hair well after shampooing and stuff, sometimes a good rinse in luke warm water is good too:)..

thank you cmd,
ive only been suffering for the past couple of years but since i had my hysterectomy 18 months ago, it has got worse. i have been using a mild baby shampoo which has no perfume and i do have to wash it every day because i feel unclean from itching so much. i have some raised clumps which makes me think its psoriasis but after looking on the web, some creams that are prescribed can cause hair loss and im not ready for that as my hair is quite thin anyway. i get embarrassed going to the hairdressers although i expect theyve seen worse. i will try all of your suggestions and am very grateful for your responces. x

I get this from time to time and have used the cheaper equivalent of Nizoral this week, as that is what the chemist gave me when I took my prescription in. It hasn't worked so well as before but has relieved the itching, scalp still a bit flaky tho. I think a lot of it is down to stress and the state of your health, I have been feeling very low and tired this week. Will have another go tomorrow, I have to wash my hair every other day or even every day if I am going out, as it is so thin and fine and looks awful if not newly washed.

Used to get a good dandruff shampoo from Sainbury's but they stopped doing it I think. Trouble is a lot of dandruff shampoos strip the colour from my hair, and I look very 'silvery'.
