daff yes i was thinking on those lines especcially as he is displaying symptoms of depression, as for food additives we are pretty choosy and try to eat fresh but i know they crop up every where drinks etc, so i dont think its the case with him,any way im waiting for him to come home for this interview just hope he does xx

Im so sorry Puss, I hope something turns up for David soon. I work with a chap with aspergers and the college were made aware, but he is much older.

I'm sorry I don't understand the start of this thread you can't get rid of Aspergers its a condition you live with and never goes .If your Autistic which is what Aspergers is you have it for life .But am sorry you are having problems as I have a daughter with the condition and a son who is high functioning Autistic.

You are correct Tory you can't get rid of Aspergers but you can make lifestyle adjustments that reduce the sevrity of the condition - I worked with a member of my staff who had Asperger's, and by the time I became his manager he was on the verge of being fired. By working with Mark I was able to make adjustments to his work and shift patterns that greatly improved his performance and retained him in the business.

Puss - sure David will be okay, but a prospective employer must be told, we haven't got crystal balls and can't do anything to help and support, if we aren't made aware of a medical condition

i wish david luck with his interview...and you too...what is it about sons

my 17 year old son left college in December for no apparent reason (well no reason he will tell me) since then he has become an almost recluse in his bedroom.

everything i suggest he isn't interested. I think if David has said he doesn't want you to speak to the employer then you should do as he asks...in my experience the more you interfere the worse it is. Although your son may be different ...you know him best

Colin you are right the employer should know but usually there is somewhere on application form to put such things isn't there?

at long last my son has an interview for a job on Tuesday. He wont discuss it or tell me anything about it. I am so hoping and praying that he turns up and they give him a go.

Hi Webster, yes most companies have pre-employment medical questionaires but people are reluctant to declare they have an issue as they feel it may jepodise their employment prospects....with a reputable employer it won't but it will allow support and adjustments to be put into place

Puss , your one fantastic Mum, I know absolutely nothing about Aspergers , but I know it was hard enough dealing with my son at that age .He,s 21 now and seems to be doing well , others 16 an a real Kevin !
Just keep doing what your doing , he,s a very lucky lad to have a family like yours ..

Thanks Tory....I have always managed people on the basis if they fail as an employee then there is a good chance I have failed as their manager....as you say though not all managers are of the same frame of mind

CarolB....As you rightly say its an individual right to declare or not, but I would strongly urge those who do have any form of disability to declare...it stops problems later on and helps a management team to support the indivdual

A tough one indeed CarolB...but as a manager I want and need to know so that I can support the individual but fully understand the doubts they may have about a manager's ''intentions'' if they do declare Again as you say a tough one. But good luck to David in whatever he does decide is the best option for him (and thats the most important bit - its his decision)
