My Mum used to put salad cream on her salad and then sprinkle sugar on that! So did I as a kid. We're from Cornwall originally.
My hubbie is Norfolk born and bred several generations on each side and he's never heard of this sort of thing before. I guess it's a personal taste thing rather than a regional one.

I have a friend from Devon who used to sprinkle his lettuce with vinegar and then sprinkle sugar on it. I quite liked it but wouldn't do it now.

I also used to sprinkle vinegar on cabbage.

I tell you what my Mum also used to do which I hated. On a Sunday night we'd have a cold sort of buffet type tea and there'd always be dishes of salad stuff. The cucumber one would always be full to the brim of malt vinegar which you'd have to pick the cucumber out of. All it would then taste of was the vinegar. Yuk!

My Gran used to put sugar on her salad. I do it now and again. I like it makes the lettuce extra crunchy.
This is Lancashire.

Good job I'm eating my lunch as this thread - bizarre as it is - is making me hungry.

Peanut butter sandwiches with celery or cucumber are lovely by the way.

Bananas on hot toast? I'll have to try that one!

Salt making things sweeter sounds really weird - how does that work?

Going to give the strawberries and pepper a bash this summer. Should I use the powdery pepper or ground black pepper?

Jenny
The salt draws the water out of the onions and cabbage so that the vinegar is not diluted.
I remember sugar on lettuce and sugar on bread and butter, this was in Plymouth.

I have heard that ground black pepper is good on strawberries but as I hate pepper I haven't tried it. When you do the salt on pineapple, do you soak the whole pineapple is salt water or when it is cut?

When I went out with an American, years ago, he made me peanut butter and jelly (jam) sandwiches but I am not a great fan of peanut butter.
Interesting thread this,

Mum was from Cheshire and always put sugar and vinegar on lettuce!
Anyone like me and just love the black dripping from the bottom of the roasting tin on toast?
Cheese and apple make great sandwiches too.

Bread and butter with sugar on - a special treat during the war years can still remember the crunch. I also add a little sugar to tinned toms. takes the bitterness away

Dripping - used to love it. My dad (who was the cook in the family) used to save the dripping in a cup and I used to carefully prise the dripping out of the cup (when it was set) and scoop out the gravy from the bottom. On hot toast with a bit of salt! Delicious. Although, can't say I'd eat it now!
