Hello Again Well i have made a little progress since my last post and would greatly appreciate if someone could check any S.A, or W.A records for me please. Patricia Bernadine O'Callaghan (born c1922 in South Australia, middle name Bernadine is in quesiton, as it may have been her 'confirmation' name) was living at Unley Road in 1941 with a John O'Callaghan (not sure of John's relationship to Patricia). She was a young unmarried woman when she gave her son John Michael O'Callaghan up for adoption in Rose Park Norwood in 1941. In the 1952 Electoral Role John O'Callaghan is still living at the Unley Road address with a John Michael O'Callaghan but no sign of Patricia, they remain there until 1961.
I have found a cousin of a Patricia Eileene O'Callaghan and they say she married a Ronald Stanley Bates in South Australia, and was believed to have been pregnant during WW2, I wonder if someone can find this marriage for me. This cousin thinks there is a good chance that her cousin Pat is the same person as the Patricia Bernadene I am looking for, even though they have different middle names. Patricia and Ron moved to W.A, NSW and then to QLD where Patricia remarried to W. Wallace. She is the daughter of Michael and Nellie and was born in 1923. So basically I have a whole heap of 'speculation' and only a few facts:
FACT: Patricia 'Bernadene" O'Callaghan born c1922 in South Australia, is age 19, unmarried in 1941, has a son John Michael O'Callaghan b. Nov 1941 in Rose Park Norwood, gives the child up for adoption.
In 1941 at her same address is a John O'Callaghan living with her.
In 1952 there is a John Michael and John O'Callaghan at this address, no Patricia.
SPECULATION:
There is a Patricia Eileen O'Callaghan born 1923 dau of Michael and Nellie O'Callaghan.
Believed to have been pregnant in 1941 though denied it to family memebers. Never did have children.
Married Ronald Bates and then later Walter Wallace in Gold Coast QLD. Died aft 1995 in QLD.
Not sure what records are available to be searched but any advice/assistance is greatly appreciated.
Danielle

You would probably benefit from adding 'Australia' to your title..........people with appropriate resources would pick up on it...........

Hi Danielle,
The Brisbane Council cemetery records (on-line) has one 'Patricia May Wallace' d age 77yrs 2007.
You could ask Brisbane Council for more details -
even who paid for the funeral etc.
Aus National Archives has 'Ronald Stanley Bates b 5/10/22 Adelaide enlisted Glenelg SA n.o.k.Patricia.
All State Libraries have an 'Ask a Librarian' service - (query forms on-line) they will check their records - electoral
rolls etc. Suggest you firstly check SA State Library for her FULL name on elect.roll when she's Ronald Bates wife.
.......The QLD State Library can then check
her from the date she's 'missing' from SA. and from when she's later Walter Wallace's wife.

Hi Danielle. These were Ronald BATES enlistment records. Shows he nominates a Patricia as next of Kin....in 1941
WW11...Service Record Name BATES, RONALD STANLEY Service Australian Army Service Number S47229 Date of Birth 5 Oct 1922 Place of Birth ADELAIDE, SA Date of Enlistment 27 Dec 1941 Locality on Enlistment PLYMPTON, SA Place of Enlistment GLENELG, SA Next of Kin BATES, PATRICIA Date of Discharge 14 Feb 1944 Rank Private Posting at Discharge X LIST 3 AITB WW2 Honours and Gallantry None for display Prisoner of War No
Nominal roll On line service records can be viewed here. http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/
There were two Patricia O'Callaghan births registered in S.A One was the Patricia eileen O'Callaghan you mention(1923 ) with the parents Michael and Nellie O'Callaghan.......The clue could be in the second name of "John michael O'Callaghan 1941".......and named Michael after Patricia's father.?..... This is of course a stab in the dark......This Patricia eileen also had a sibling Michael Robert O'Callaghan born 1922 Adelaide
This was the other Patricia's birth registered:
Surname: OCALLAGHAN Given Names: Patricia Noreen Date: 1922-04-07 Sex: F Father: Frederick James OCALLAGHAN Mother: Mary Catherine SHEEHAN Birth Place/Residence: St Peters District Code: Nor ( Norwood ) Symbol: Book: 93A Page: 531 Cross Reference:
Unfortunatley.....the S.A marriage cd's that are available to the general public ..only list up to 1937.....so i cant check whom this Patricia ( 1922 ) married.
Perhaps someone living in S.A ...may have access to this information.
Best wishes.
Tony ( Melbourne Vic. )

From a different angle...what i cant seem to understand is that in 1941 there is a John O'Callaghan living with her, and 1951 a John Michael O'Callaghan ...but no Patricia. It almost sounds like this Patricia was not born an O'Callaghan.....but married one or took his name.?
You say.......living at**** Unley Road **** in 1941 with a John O'Callaghan (not sure of John's relationship to Patricia)........
There appears to be a John Michael O'Callaghan that was born in Victoria......that enlisted in the army in ******North Unley S.A******
Service Record Name O'CALLAGHAN, JOHN MICHAEL Service Australian Army Service Number SX39721 Date of Birth 18 Jul 1923 Place of Birth NEAUPHUR, VIC Date of Enlistment 10 Mar 1944 Locality on Enlistment NORTH UNLEY, SA Place of Enlistment IN THE FIELD, QLD Next of Kin O'CALLAGHAN, JOHN Date of Discharge 17 Sep 1946 Rank Private Posting at Discharge 8 AUSTRALIAN INFANTRY BATTALION WW2 Honours and Gallantry None for display Prisoner of War No
Poss Scenario: This ( above ) of course, could be the "John Michael O'Callaghan" and the next of Kin "John O'Callaghan" ( their father ) that were listed 1941 with Patricia O'Callaghan and 1951....and perhaps her sibling and father at Unley Road... S.A....or even a cousin and Uncle.? Perhaps Patricia named her son after a brother/sibling going off to war ( John Michael and O'Callaghan after her family name )
Again....cant check Victorian births for a Patricia OCallaghan in Victoria, as cd indexing for Victoria only list up to 1921.....................although you seem very confident that Patricia was born in S.A ***FACT: Patricia 'Bernadene" O'Callaghan born c1922 in South Australia****
Will keep looking for you.

WOW, thank you so much Tony! Looks like this one may be solved afterall. So it would see that John Michael O'Callaghan is either Patricia's husband or brother and that in turn John O'Callaghan is either her father in law or father. The reason I think O'Callaghan is her maiden name is that is how it is shown on the birth certificate of her child. Also I wonder if the reason she isnt shown on the electoral role is maybe she was in hospital (having the baby) or alternatively had a different residence and was only visiting whilst due to having the baby. So the next step would be to try and find out what relationship Patricia is to John Michael and John. By the looks of it the Patricia I am looking for is neither of the S.A Patricia's found, and maybe the VIC BMD records hold the key. Thanks again Tony, I am so grateful and so is my friend (Patricia's son - John Michael).

H Danielle. There are a number of possible's i guess. I wish i could say i am correct, but our privacy laws differ from State to State and make it very difficult to confirm any possibility.
This John Michael O'Callaghan could be either her husband or brother.? If it was her husband, i cannot see why she would have given her child up for adoptian?....so i'm leaning more towards her sibling/brother and father. Of course, i cant be sure of either statements....because of our stupid laws here.
For instance the two larger populated states ( N.S. W and Victoria )
N.S.W allows marriages to be checked free on-line forename and surname up to 1956.......but Victoria only allows up to 1942 on a purchased cd. (but no free on-line )..........N.S.W only allows births to be checked free on-line up to 1906......but Victoria allows up to 1921 for births on cd Index.....but are not free viewing on-line.........S.A however, allow births on cd.up to 1928 but marriages only up to 1938....but nothing on line.....lol So you can see our dilema when trying to do look-ups for people in various States around Australia ( Frustrating )
If you could find and obtain Patricia's Death cert. I'm sure it would answer a few questions.
I will keep my ears and eyes open for you. Best of luck. Tony ( Melbourne )

Once again you come through for me Tony! Cant thank you enough. I wish I could find the death certificate for Patricia. I had a search done of S.A death records and they came back with nothing, so she may have moved interstate or married, inwhich case I dont know her married name.
Well the progress made today (thanks largely to you) has given me that encouragement to keep going. The museum in Unley is getting back to me next week with the land/property rate details for the address Patricia gave as her residence in 1941 and where John Michael and John were living, will see what that comes up with.

Just a bit more info. Failing finding a Death for Patricia, or whom she may have married and /or if she did marry at all.?
If the John O'Callaghan listed on electoral roll ( 1941 ) was her father ?.....then his Death cert. should show all his children.... Alive and deceased at the time of his death..
Australian death certs. provide names of children of the person deceased. If a Patricia is listed as a child of the deceased, and a John Michael ...... it would at least tell you John and John michael were her family......and should show any marriages of John ( spouse )...giving a mothers name of Patricia and John michael
Just another avenue.

Still finding more...:>)) I can stilll check for births in Victoria up to 1921..
Notice the birth place on this entry...and Fathers name. Could be one would think a sibling of John michael and perhaps Patricia ( if she was an O'Callaghan )
Birth registered Victoria:
Surname: OCALLAGHAN Given Names: Katherine Sybil Event: B Sex: Spouse Surname/Father: Jno Spouse Gvn Names/Mother: Louisa Salter MARCHANT Age: Age Code: Birth Place: NEUARPURR Death Place: Year: 1917 Reg. Number: 31119
At the very least this gives a Mother given name and maiden surname of MARCHANT.
Just need now to find a death of a Patricia ?.... with Fathers name of John O'Callaghan and mother as Louisa Salter O'Callaghan ( nee MARCHANT )
All is not lost.....Yet...and at the least it would dispell whether Patricia was a sibling or a wife/partner to John michael O'Callaghan

Terrific Tony thank you for your time and help with this. Yes and I suppose if I can find the death of Louisa Salter Marchant that may also tell me the children's names and hopefully I will find Patricia listed. She may have died in VIC or SA, as Patricia says she was born in Frances, is possible she was born on the families move to S.A from VIC.
Thanks
Danielle

Woohoo! Just checked FreeBMD in the off chance Louisa might be English and sure enough there she is Louisa Salter Marchant born 1896 Battle. I realize it isnt 100% that Louisa fits into the picture and I am getting a little ahead of myself but it all seems to be slowly coming together.

Well that makes it all the more interesting Danielle.
NEUARPURR Victoria...and FRANCES South Australia....are appox 5km from each other.!! Each town just over there respective boarder and divided by the State line.
To much of a coincidence perhaps.!!!
Looking more like Patricia is a sibling with the family on the move into South Australia from Victoria.?....but dont want to jump the gun just yet....lol
FRANCES is approx 1 to 2 km into South Australia from State border...and possibly Patricia was registered in Victoria births c.1922.?....and this is why she is not listed on South Australian Index. Quite a common error on many marriage certs, and childrens birth certs, show a place of birth by a spouse or parent as a town they grew up in, rather than a town they were born in, as thats where they remember their childhood, so figure thats where they were born and its added to BDM certificate.
Marriage records for Victoria show :
Surname: OCALLAGHAN Given Names: Jno Event: M Sex: Spouse Surname/Father: MARCHANT Spouse Gvn Names/Mother: Louisa Salter Age: Age Code: Birth Place: Death Place: Year: 1915 Reg. Number: 10744

Wonderful Tony, I am just downloading Alfred's death certificate and i have also just received the image of John O'Callaghan and Louisa Marchant's marriage cert. 6 nov 1915, John is 36, Louisa 20, John was born in Hamilton (???) and Louisa in Hastings England so all fits. John's parents are shown as James O'Callaghan and Kate O'Connor. The witness to the marriage are Joseph Timothy O'Callaghan and Catherine O'Callagahn.
I cant believe how much has been achieved today Tony your help has been invaluable.

Glad today has been a little success in your quest.
Seems your friend John Michael O'Callaghan has found his grandparents. One from England and the other born in Hamilton. There is a Hamilton in Victoria.
I carry all if not most BDM's for all states in Australia from Pioneer 1800s index's through to mid 1900s. If you need further lookups let me know.
Cheers.Tony
