Hi ALL, This is driving me nuts and I need help with it... I have a George BRITTON born 1881 who married a Florence Maud GARLAND born 1883. Hanham Bristol. They married in 1899 and had their first born in 1901. But that means that Florence was only 16 when she married and yet she is still living at home at the age of 18. On the 1901 census she is living with George as man and wife. Please tell me I am not going mad.....!!!

Bernice - what do you mean, she is still living at home at the age of 18? Kate.

Bernice

Bernice Report 22 Jun 2005 17:14

Hiya, Florence married George in 1899. But her birth date was 1883, this makes her 16....

Bernice - do you have their marriage certificate? If so, what are the details on it? Is her age given as 16? What are the father's details? Does it mention her parents' consent? Kate.

Kate Report 22 Jun 2005 17:19

I suppose this is their marriage, from FreeBMD, but no mention of Florence having a middle name: Marriages Dec 1899 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Britton George Keynsham 5c 1288 Churchill Jane Keynsham 5c 1288 Garland Florence Keynsham 5c 1288 Ratcliffe Charles Keynsham 5c 1288 Kate.

Thank you Rosemary and Kate, Rosemary you are spot on honey, on the 1891 census she is aged 8 and ofcourse still living at home. Kate I have not got the marriage cert as yet, that will probably be my next step, I have also found a Maud Garland marrying a George Britton in 1901, so could Florence drop her name and marry in Maud. Its certainly a mystery and driving me potty....x

Bernice

Bernice Report 22 Jun 2005 17:23

Rosemary please don't say that.......her first born was Herbert in 1901...x

Bernice - I think your best bet will certainly be to get the marriage cert and see if the Florence on it had the same father as the Florence living at home on the 1901. My great-grandmother married my great-grandfather in 1899, and she is listed as unmarried, living with her father, in 1901, and that was because they had married in secret, without telling her family (they got married at a register office), but she was over 21 so didn't need her father's consent. I'm not sure how easy it would have been for a 16-year old to do the same, nor why she would be listed in two places. So I would definitely get the marriage cert if I were you. Kate.

Hi All, GARLAND, Florence Maud Record Type: Births Quarter: March Year: 1883 District: Keynsham County: Gloucestershire Somerset Volume: 5c Page: 659 (click to see others on page) This is the same florence who married george britton, (I think), however could there have been two of them with 2 years difference, she could not of been on the census twice as 1 is 16 and the other is married at 18.

Bernice

Bernice Report 22 Jun 2005 17:30

Are you 100% sure that it was Florence MAUD and not just Florence? Have you looked at the St Catherine's index to see if there are other ones in the right area? Are there other George Britton's marrying? I think you need to get the cert to see what it says before jumping to any conclusions. I've done that before, and traced the wrong family back for about 3 years!! Chloe

Hi Rosemary, Thank you i totally agree with you, George married Florence Garland in 1899, on the 1901 census George and Florence are together as man and wife with a birth date for florence being 1883, the only one I can find is a florence maud with that birth date...... thanks, x

Bernice, There's another Florence Garland with father George in 1891 listed as 13. She is missing in 1901 so she could be your Florence. Could be she lied about her age because she was older than her husband. In 1891 she and her siblings are listed as being born in Mangotsfield but by 1901 it states Kingswood for her siblings. You have to get the marriage cert to clear this up. Crista

Bernice Report 22 Jun 2005 23:46

Thanks Crista, The relatives are telling me that they think George was 20 and Florence was 18 when they married, and yes a cert would be helpful, but which one do I pick....? cheers. x
