Hello I know little about my grandfather as he died before I was born. I am now struggling to find any information about him. All I have is the following:
Death certificate dated 5th April 1955 in Wavertree, Lancashire Age 66
Marriage dated 24th May 1920 in Princes Park Liverpool to Sarah Hale. Charles aged 30 a Railway Servant. Father Charles Pennington (deceased) a Gardener.
I have also found them on the 1939 Register where the birth date for Charles Henry Pennington was 4th February 1890. Living in Liverpool. Occupation a Railway Porter.
If you could help me perhaps find him on a census before his marriage or his birth record that would be wonderful.
Thank you very much

You should be able to find his birth on freebmd…………
Bear in mind that age on a death certificate is only ‘as known’ and may not be accurate
Who witnessed the 1920 marriage?
ADDED
Cert is on FMP….both witnesses named Hall, so no help there
The address Charles & Sarah gave was that of Sarah’s widowed mother, Ellen Hale

Hello ErikaH Sounds like the date on the 1939 Register of 4th Feb 1890 is correct then. Sadly there is no birth on freebmd that matches that. :-(

Only 1 Charles Henry Pennington born 1890 +/- 4 years with phonetic surname search
Name: Mother's Maiden Surname: PENNINGTON, CHARLES HENRY GLEW GRO Reference: 1889 D Quarter in GLANFORD BRIGG Volume 07A Page 691
which would be this chap in 1911 -
1911 Census For England & Wales Grange Farm Glentworth Lincoln, Glentworth, Lincolnshire, England
First name(s) Last name Relationship to head Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place Thomas Neare Head Married Male 33 1878 Farmer Lincs Cold Hanworth Mildred Neare Wife Married Female 27 1884 - Lincs Cold Hanworth Henry Neare Son Single Male 0 1911 - Lincs Glenworth Charles Henry Pennington Servant Single Male 21 1890 Farm waggoner Lincs Howsham Grange Robert Glew Servant Single Male 18 1893 Farm waggoner under Lincs South Kelsey Ethel Hill Servant Single Female 22 1889 General servant domestic Lincs Riby
If this is him and he joined the Railways after this, his job may well have taken him to another part of the country and if in hospital whoever completed the census may have thought he was from Liverpool ?/
HOWEVER - in 1921 he is in Lincolnshire with wife Bertha and is a Farm Labourer

Yes, Father Henry, but ruled out on fact of Charles being in Lincs with a wife in 1921.
Was he going by his middle name in 1901 - this family in Toxteth with "Father" Charles a Gardener. Is Charles perhaps Grandfather or adopted family as the 1891/1881 census doesn't show Charles and Margaret with children

On the image of 1911 census for Charles, Margaret and Henry in Toxteth Park - posted earlier by Greyghost -
the word "adopted" is added to "son" for Henry.
So if that's the right man, there's no way to know his birth name.

Just looking at the 1911 census with Charles, Margaret and Henry I would be fascinated to know if anyone can hazard a guess at what it reads under the crossing out. Could it be a name of the adopted Henry??

Almost certainly just a comment relating to the fact that the word ‘adopted’ had been added by someone other than the householder

It looks to me something like Marius (Marian ?) Santoria.
Possibly the signature of the person adding "adopted" ?? But I can't find anyone of a similar name living in Liverpool in 1911 - or at any time.

It is interesting that in 1901, the 'son' Henry is shown with a definite named birthplace, which might indicate that his natural parents were known to the family perhaps. Do you have any extended distant family in Anglesey at the time of his birth?
If you could locate records for his school in the 1901 census area, it might show when he joined and just possibly any further information about him.
I realise this is just an outside chance, but you have to explore such possibilities, when clutching straws :-)
