Megs Dicky Island

Megs Dicky Island Report 18 Oct 2020 12:48

So I've hit a brick wall.

My gg grandmother Jane Mckenzie 1869 married Charles Newlands 1868 on 26/07/1889.

Up until today I thought they only had 3 children.
William Mckenzie Newlands 1890-1964 born Elgin, Moray, Scotland.
Jane Newlands 1893 - 1973 born Glasgow, Scotland.
Christina Dicky Newlands 1896 - 1985 born Edinburgh, Scotland.

I have asked relatives about a couple of photos I have of Dolly. I have been told Dolly is another sibling. I also have a photo of Dolly with young lady called Iris which we think is her daughter. In the photos Dolly does look younger than Jane and Christina.

I can't seem to find any records for Dolly, so hoping you lovely people can help me out again!

Thank you in advance.
Meg

Look for births on the GRO site, using ONLY the surnames

Assuming this is England/Wales, of course. You haven’t mentioned location, which is vital

Presumably, you’ve checked 1901 and 1911 censuses?

nameslessone Report 18 Oct 2020 13:06

Dolly could well be a nickname.

Have a look at births in the area on freebmd You can now use the GRO site to find the mother’s maiden name. The 1911 census will tell you how many children Jane had if she was alive then. Although she could just about had more after 1911.

Charles is in five GR trees - born SCOTLAND!!!!!

If the family are Scottish then you need to use Scotland’s People website.

Not on 1901 census. You’ll probably have to pay for units on SP to look at 1911

Look to see if they have followed the typical Scottish naming pattern for their children

ArgyllGran Report 18 Oct 2020 14:08

There are no deaths in Scotland of any Newlands with mms McKenzie, aged 22 or under , but 263 with no mms stated on SP, between 1889 and 1911.

Ten of those are in Morayshire.

I would suggest these - as possibilities only. You'd have to see the certs to confirm or not:

Found a baptism record for Janet Greenhorn Newlands 1894, parent Robert Newlands and Janet Boyd. Think that rules her out.
