Bought some credits on ScotlandPeople o find more information on the 1881 census I posted earlier. Not a huge amount of extra infor. Only extra bit was that C H Mortimer was a Pit Labourer. Their daughter Mary C Mortimer was born Pollackshaw, Lanarkshire. I looked up the birth for her and found the following:

1874 Parish of Eastwood, County Renfrew
Name: Mary Christina Mortimer
Born: 1874 October 15th 39 Marwell Road, Polickshaw
Sex: Female

Father's details: Charles Henry Mortimer, Railway Pointsman
Mother's details: Mary Jane Mortimer Maiden Surname Logan
Parents married 1861 November 15th Ireland CAN'T READ TOWN - think it ends in Ward or nard and starts with an N - Nantward perhaps?
Registered by father.

Now I need to work out if this is them or not. Help with locating the Ireland wedding would be much appreciated and where the family went after 1881.

Sarah, I think the marriage might have been 1862:

Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958
Name: Charles Mortimer
Date of Registration: 1862
Registration district: Newtownards
Volume: 9
Page: 210 (click to see others on page)
FHL Film Number: 101248

There's a Mary Logan in the list of brides.

Thanks for the marriage - yes that does look like the one. Does anyone know what the deal is with irish Census returns? Are they available online? Would like to see if Charles appears on the 1851 and if the family appear in 1891. EDIT - One of these might have Charles place of birth on so that I can confirm if it is my one or not.

EDIT - Also, can you purhase the Irish certificates like you can the English ones? If I got the certificate it would have the father's name on.

Thinking the family on the Scottish 1881 who married in Ireland isn't the right ones. My charles and mary appear on the 1861 census in London as married while the other couple didn't marry until November 1861 in Ireland. I suppose it is possible that they were posing as man and wife before actually marrying. What do you think?

Sarah, only way to be sure is to get that Irish marriage certificate, even if just to eliminate it.

This thread has all sorts of useful links about Irish research, ordering certs, etc:

Regarding Irish census, the only ones that survived and are available on-line are the 1901 & 1911. They are free to search and view on http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
