One of my ancestors, a Charles Mortimer, was born in Mildenhall, Wiltshire in 1821. He was the son of Edward Mortimer and Miriam James. I have found him on the 1841 census return living in Stratton, Wiltshire and then in 1861 in St Giles, Middlesex lodging with the Welling Family. I have not been able to locate him in 1851, or 1871 onwards - would appreciate any help. The 1861 census shows that he married a lady called Mary b 1825 and it looks like the place of birth is Whur Castell but I've tried looking on Google for this place name and nothing comes up. Any ideas? |

If he is actually 40 in that entry like it looks on the actual record then his birth year would be 1811 and it wouldn't be my Charles Mortimer. Not sure where they got 26 from on that. |

Just came back to edit that it was probably the wrong person. At least that one can be ruled out. |

How did you come by him - down from an earlier ancestor, or back from a more recent one? Whilst not meaning/intending to criticise your research skills, sometime it helps to have it checked. |

It is annoying with him being from Mildenhall what with there being two Mildenhalls in England - one in Wiltshire (where my Charles comes from) and one in Suffolk. The one in Wiltshire was also called Minal. |

Edward Mortimer and Miriam James are my 4x great grandparents. They married in Avebury in 1798, moved to Alton Priors where they had my 3x great grandfather Thomas Mortimer in 1809, then they moved to Mildenhall where they had the rest of their children. I have been to Wiltshire record office and obtained the baptism records for their children which is what gave me Charles' details. We never found a corresponding burial for him there so presume he lived through childhood. Plus with finding the 1861 census record for a Charles born in Mildenhall (see entry above) I am assuming this is him as there are no other Charles Mortimer's born Mildenhall around that time. |

Could this help with identifying the place name for Mary? Think phonetically |

They could have both died before the 1871 census. Have you searched for deaths in Middlesex? |

I'm thinking Whur Castell might be in Wales as Castell translates to Castle in Welsh. But still not sure about the first bit |

Might be worth chasing this Mary Ann on the censuses |

The Pollexfen name rings a bell actually - think I've tried looking in to her before but will have another go. I have had a look at the burials for Middlesex and found the following: |

If the 1863 death is for 'your' Charles, Mary may have married again by the next census, under the Mortimer surname |

Well I've not come up with much re: Mary Pollexfen - cannot find her on the census for 1851/1861 nor a birth around 1825 - (only checked Family Search though). |
