Sarah, only way to be sure is to get that Irish marriage certificate, even if just to eliminate it.

This thread has all sorts of useful links about Irish research, ordering certs, etc:
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/951721

Regarding Irish census, the only ones that survived and are available on-line are the 1901 & 1911. They are free to search and view on http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

Thinking the family on the Scottish 1881 who married in Ireland isn't the right ones. My charles and mary appear on the 1861 census in London as married while the other couple didn't marry until November 1861 in Ireland. I suppose it is possible that they were posing as man and wife before actually marrying. What do you think?

Sarah

Sarah Report 13 Sep 2012 10:53

Thanks for the marriage - yes that does look like the one. Does anyone know what the deal is with irish Census returns? Are they available online? Would like to see if Charles appears on the 1851 and if the family appear in 1891. EDIT - One of these might have Charles place of birth on so that I can confirm if it is my one or not.

EDIT - Also, can you purhase the Irish certificates like you can the English ones? If I got the certificate it would have the father's name on.

Sarah, I think the marriage might have been 1862:

Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958
Name: Charles Mortimer
Date of Registration: 1862
Registration district: Newtownards

There's a Mary Logan in the list of brides.

Bought some credits on ScotlandPeople o find more information on the 1881 census I posted earlier. Not a huge amount of extra infor. Only extra bit was that C H Mortimer was a Pit Labourer. Their daughter Mary C Mortimer was born Pollackshaw, Lanarkshire. I looked up the birth for her and found the following:

1874 Parish of Eastwood, County Renfrew
Name: Mary Christina Mortimer
Born: 1874 October 15th 39 Marwell Road, Polickshaw
Sex: Female

Father's details: Charles Henry Mortimer, Railway Pointsman
Mother's details: Mary Jane Mortimer Maiden Surname Logan
Parents married 1861 November 15th Ireland CAN'T READ TOWN - think it ends in Ward or nard and starts with an N - Nantward perhaps?
Registered by father.

Now I need to work out if this is them or not. Help with locating the Ireland wedding would be much appreciated and where the family went after 1881.

Ah I see - I will check out ScotlandPeople then - thought it was a subscription site.

Thanks HeyJudeB4Beatles for the Charles Mortimer in Southwark - That family is related to me a few generations down.

Thanks Moody Blue for the Pollexfen record - that Mary Ann Pollexfen married in 1861 in Horncastle to Francis Seaman Dymoke so is not likely to be the one from St Giles.

Well I've not come up with much re: Mary Pollexfen - cannot find her on the census for 1851/1861 nor a birth around 1825 - (only checked Family Search though).

Thought I'd check out the Welling family that Charles and Mary were living with but so far haven't found much on them either.

Someone suggested it could be White Castle that Mary was born. Found the following places:
whitecastle in Lanarkshire, Scotland
white castle is a street in Swindon, Wiltshire
white castle in Abergavenny
white castle in Louisianna, USA
white castle in donegal, ireland

There is an 1881 census record in Scotland for a C H Mortimer and Mary Mortimer (born Ireland) as follows:

Name: Mary Mortimer
Age: 57
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1824
Relationship: Wife
Spouse's name : C H Mortimer
Gender: Female
Where born: Ireland
Registration Number: 587
Registration district: Dalry
Civil parish: Dalry
Town: Dalry
County: Ayrshire
Address: New Street
Occupation: Labourer'S Wife
ED: 5
Household schedule number: 76
Line: 21
Roll: cssct1881_183
Household Members:
C H Mortimer 59
Mary Mortimer 57
Mary C Mortimer 6

It lists C H Mortimer as being from England - annoyingly, I can't view the original - anyone have access to ScotlandPeople site to view the actual image to see if there is any extra information?

If the 1863 death is for 'your' Charles, Mary may have married again by the next census, under the Mortimer surname

Sarah

Sarah Report 11 Aug 2012 15:30

The Pollexfen name rings a bell actually - think I've tried looking in to her before but will have another go. I have had a look at the burials for Middlesex and found the following:
Deaths Dec 1863 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mortimer Charles Hackney 1b 248

This is the only in Middlesex between 1861 and 1871. There are quite a few Mary Mortimer's buried - none for Hackney to match the Charles Mortimer. The ones from 1866 onwards don't match up with regards to age at time of death leaving me with five options to play with. That said, she may well have still been alive in 1871 census but as I don't know what her actual place of birth is, I'm not sure where to go with it. Even if Charles did die between 1861 and 1871 - I'm still to locate him in 1851!

Might be worth chasing this Mary Ann on the censuses

Sorry - can't help. Hope someone else can come up with something for you.

I'm thinking Whur Castell might be in Wales as Castell translates to Castle in Welsh. But still not sure about the first bit

They could have both died before the 1871 census. Have you searched for deaths in Middlesex?

Edward Mortimer and Miriam James are my 4x great grandparents. They married in Avebury in 1798, moved to Alton Priors where they had my 3x great grandfather Thomas Mortimer in 1809, then they moved to Mildenhall where they had the rest of their children. I have been to Wiltshire record office and obtained the baptism records for their children which is what gave me Charles' details. We never found a corresponding burial for him there so presume he lived through childhood. Plus with finding the 1861 census record for a Charles born in Mildenhall (see entry above) I am assuming this is him as there are no other Charles Mortimer's born Mildenhall around that time.

Sarah

Sarah Report 11 Aug 2012 12:20

It is annoying with him being from Mildenhall what with there being two Mildenhalls in England - one in Wiltshire (where my Charles comes from) and one in Suffolk. The one in Wiltshire was also called Minal.
