hi im trying to trace any living rellies on my farthers side, he was william george thomas born 1st dec 1901 mother ellen day born 1866 farther william born 1860 think his siblings were clara frederick and lillie, i remember going to lightwoods park birmingham and playing in the pool with my cousins whom i would dearly love to trace, anita xx

Just to be clear, is Thomas the surname?

Do you know where he was born? That info would help to find his parents and siblings (were they older or younger?) in the 1901 census, and having accurate info about the siblings could help find their marriage and children.

The only William George Thomas registered in the oct-dec quarter of 1901 was in Islington.

In the jan-mar quarter of 1902 (possible for a December birth) there were three, in Swansea, West Derby and Plymouth.

The 1901 household seems to be blended. It isn't there in 1891, although Frederick and probably Lillie had been born by the 1891 census. There is also a very long gap between Lillie and Clara.

However, there are these births:

The M D could well be for Maud Day.

A switch from Lily to Lilian would not be unexpected. My grandmother did it when she married, and I have seen other examples in families here at GR.

So, what I was getting at there was that the two oldest siblings of your William may not have been born as Thomas, but as Day.

So if you are looking for them in later life, you might need to look for that surname.

There doesn't seem to be a marriage for William Thomas to Ellen Day. Do you have your William Jr's mother's name from his birth certificate?

Since Ellen seems to have had two children as Day, it sounds like she was previously married.

If we could find her and/or the two older children and/or William Thomas Sr in the 1891 census, it would help, but I've had no luck.

I think my theory may be correct, and unfortunately that gives us a sad outcome for brother Frederick.

If that Frederick had been married, his wife's name would have been given.

His age matches the age of the Frederick Thomas in the 1901 census, and his mother's name was Ellen Day, the name you gave as your William's mother.


You started out by saying your father was born 1 December 1901, but now you have said he was born 31 July 1901.

Could you read over what you have said, and the info given in the thread?

Do you have your William's birth certificate, and are the names William Thomas and Ellen Day the parents' names on that certificate? - edit - yes, you've answered that now.

What do you think of the possibility that the two older children were born Day, and that brother Frederick was killed in WWI?

You spoke of a split in the family. Between William and Ellen?

I'm not having any luck finding any of these people with any of the others in the 1911 census.

Just to add, what is particularly sad about that Frederick's death is that he died two days after the Armistice.

My mother's uncle died in October 1918 and is also buried in Etaples Cemetery. He had been gased a couple of weeks earlier, and died in a US field hospital (he was Canadian). That is probably what happened to Frederick Day also, I would guess.
