Find Ancestors

Hi,
I'm trying to trace my family. My grandmother was Beatrice Gooch, born 1896, died 1955 in Leeds. She married George Henry Clough and had two twins, George and Harry (my father). Beatrice had, according to the 1901 census, 7 siblings, but there may have been more after that, how do I find them? The seven siblings were:

Samuel - born abt 1882
Joseph - born abt 1885
Edith - born abt 1887
Arthur - born abt 1889
Thomas - born abt 1891 - married Beth and had a son Harry, who had two daughters, Helen and Alison.
Maurice - born abt 1893 - married Olive and had Jack, born 1927 and 12 other children - names unknown. Jack married Gwendoline Kerr and had three daughters.
Harry - born in 1900.
I know there were two sons called John and Basil but I'm not sure whether they were sons or grandsons and which one I'm not sure either.
The parents of the eight children were Harry, born abt 1860 and Anna, born abt 1863 - both born in Suffolk, children were born in Leeds.

The mother was called Emma - sorry I put it was Anna I got confused with another relative. I don't know her maiden name and I don't know how to find it out.

I have found that Harry Gooch Sr's parents were Samuel J Gooch, born 1813, and Elizabeth - but I don't know her maiden name - she was born 1830 I think.

Can anybody help me please?

Harry Gooch married Emma Marshall 1883 Mar Q Pancras.In 1881 Emma was a servant in Marylebone.
Samuel Gooch Married Eliza Chenery 1857Sep Q Stow -in 1851 she is living with him as his house keeper.
Samuel gives his place of birth 1871 as Stowupland but earlier in 1861 and 1851 he gives it as Lavenham.
The IGI has a baptism Samuel Gooch 11/9/1811 Lavenham son of Mary Gooch.
Mary Gooch was baptised 13/4/1788 daughter of Elizabeth Gooch.
Not strong on marriage at this point!

Yes thanks, that was how I found out most of the information and I remembered there being a Thomas and a Maurice as I know two of their children. You must be an expert at this - you found it in seven minutes but it took me ages to find - I suppose it just comes with practice. I can't find any other information though, can you help? Is there any way I can find out if there are any siblings after 1901? How do I find out Emma's maiden name?

Sorry, Gillian I hadn't seen your message! Thanks so much for that information - how on earth did you find that so quickly?!! What's the IGI? What's the Q stand for?

I'm unsure whether this Elizabeth Gooch is Mary Gooch's mother - Gooch won't have been Mary's maiden name - unless she didn't get married? Did Samuel have any siblings? How did you find information from 1788? What do you mean when you say not strong on marriage at this point?

OK David -explanations
The IGI is the international genealogical index which is free and can be found at familysearch.org
The Q means the Quarter in which the event -birth marriage or death- is registered
My bit about marriage was because the baptisms on IGI usually show mother and fathers names and if only mother shown the birth is probably illegitimate.
I myself have Suffolk forebears and not a few of them were born out of wedlock!
Samuels mother was Mary and her mother was Elizabeth
A kind son gives me sub to Ancestry so when stalled on my tree I try to help others.

In reply to your question about Samuelssiblings the only way I know is to try Hugh wallis's site-if you enrer Hugh Wallis into your search engine you'll find the first site listed refers to the IGI -click on that and then on country and county and "L" for Lavenham and click on christenings around 1811 and enter "Gooch" and work through to see if any more born to Mary -of course she may have married after Samuel was born which makes it dificult

In 1841 - the above Mary (aged 50) is living in the same house + another Mary Gooch aged 20

I'm confused :S. But this Mary is a Gooch and so is the younger Mary - so they might still be related. How do you know that she is not just his mother living next door and maybe that was her job? And maybe the younger Mary is Samuel's sister? So do you think that Mary is not his mother?

I am thinking that a Mary Gooch is Samuel's mother - no father mentioned so she may not have been married !!

There is a Mary Gooch living next door to him on 1851 which MAY have no connection, but just MAY be his mother.

This same Mary on 1841 had another Mary Gooch living with her - 1841 does not state relationships - SO, she could be yet another illigitimate daughter, or a daughter-in-law ?? - 1st wife of Samuel who is absent?

We REALLY need to find Samuel on 1841 !!

NOW - Please beware that not all people are serious researchers and SOME people are just 'name collectors !!

BUT - I have found this website with many of your relatives on it.

It is probably worth contacting them but be warned - the person is either a relative and has information you can share, OR the whole lot will be 'stuck together' and not really connected.

It would be worth a contact though to see which is the case.

You mean Samuel Gooch was married before? I also can't help but notice that Samuel was 19 years older than Eliza Chenery - is that normal for people in those days? I can't find Samuel Gooch on 1841 - I looked for one born in 1811 in Suffolk but I couldn't see him. I also tried to find Emma Marshall and I found one that was born in Leeds - which is where the children were born - but on 1901 it said she was born in Suffolk. Also how come they got married in London - I assume that's what it means when it says Pancras. Was Mary still living next to Samuel in 1811? If so you may be able to view the others on the same page?

I'll keep looking but it seems like you'd be more likely to find one than me? Any tips on looking?

I looked on Hugh Wallis' website but it didn't find any Gooches born in the 1739 to 1835 batch and on the 1813 to 1818 it only found a John Gooch and two Mary Gooches in Lavenham - one married a Thomas Evered and the other married George Farrants - both in 1814 - but no mention of any children? How did you find Samuel Gooch, Gillian?

Don't let it confuse you further though - If the person can't give you the right help - put it to one side for now and contact them again later when you have more info.

Thanks, sorry I'd already written my messages before I read that one. It looks like a good website and the dates certainly correlate with what you've found, although certain dates, ie. Mary's sister, Ann was stated to have been born in 1792 and died in 1872 yet he says that she was 73 when she died. I will contact this person to find out more information.
