Thanks .........he called in tonight on his way to work. Said his attic room was cold and could we lend him a radiator key. He already seems to be talking to us in a more grown up way.

Hazel I have COPD, I use an inhaler in the morning and at night, been able to go without one during the day so it is under control, no cure though. Hope your sister gets on ok Friday x

Oh bless, I lived in two attic rooms in Cambridge many years ago and they were very cold, not much central heating in those days either!
This will be the making of him Carole, and he will learn so much about the way of the world and how to budget and look after himself.

I didn't know you have COPD, were you a smoker? I have to use an inhaler morning and night, but rarely use the daytime one. I am listed as asthmatic, I think it came from all the cleaning products when I used to be houseproud and also had a cleaning job when my son started school.

We just don't know what we do to our bodies, do we?

Hope all goes well with R. He will thrive on the independence.

I used to smoke about twenty a day, about 29 years ago I stopped. I was diagnosed last year after going for chest x rays and having had anti biotic to try clear up a constant "cold". My chest hurt and was clogged up. Loads better now. It was very frightening when I had the attac and couldn't breath.

I'm sure R moving out will do us all good xx

Hello everyone, I haven't been on here for ages but kept looking in, Treehunter I am sending positive thoughts for your sister and a hug for you, as you say it's not a good start to the year.
I just wanted to wish all my friends on here a Happy New Year and hope this one is better for us all.
Ben you are doing well with your tree, keep it up I haven't done anything on mine for a year or so but will have to start again soon.

I know the 63rd were in New York in about 1778. I have found it was very feasible that a soldier went away in his army and his wife and children remained at home. I have been to New York twice and it would be good to find an ancestor who spent some time there in the army.

I would think it highly likely that the wife and children stayed home when the husband went away with the army, Navy or marines.

Hello all, hope things are looking up for those who find Christmas tough. Also hope that those up north are thawing out a bit after the big freeze.
Hazel, it sounds like your sister is a battler. I think COPD can be progressive, but hopefully she can get some good treatment.
Caz (Yorkshire), I really hope and pray that 2011 will be better for you than the past couple of years and that you will find away of getting some better pain relief.

Ben, I think Ann is possibly right about family staying home while the husband went away, but one of my girlfriend's ancestors was in an Ayrshire regiment and while I can find him and the family in some of the Scotland censuses, they seem to be missing from some as well. Also the later ones (1891, 1901) show that some of the children were born in Ireland and England.

Just want to wish everyone a better new year - I am coming off a 3-day migraine headache, so a bit wonky right now. Don't ask me any intelligent questions today. if I am feeling better tomorrow I'm heading to visit my son for a few days for a break. Liz take note that I ate my fair share of chocs over Christmas and paid for it with a migraine!
Carole, glad to hear you sound a little less stressed.
Tomorrow is the 60th anniversary of our arrival in Canada.

Mary, I wondered where you were. I hope the migraine has burned itself out and that you are able to visit your son.

The 63rd were in new York in the summer of 1776. I think I have enough to show the one who died in 1834 in Neasham is my ancestor. If he left the army in 1803 aged 58 he must have been in the army for some time and a sergeant.

I think he left his wife and children at home when he was away in the army. I would think he was in the regiment by 1775 so that means he must have spent time in America.

Hi Ben, that makes sense, I would assume most army men left their wives and children at home in those days. Have some Navy background in my tree with my grandfather who was a navy surgeon, when he was stationed in Malta, my grandmother did live there for a while also. Anywhere else he went , Crimean war South Africa, India, she was left in England.
I am visiting my son and GF in Toronto and getting some rest, didn't know how much rest I needed, basically slept all day and night yesterday!!
Staying till Sunday,then back to reality LOL

Son called to visit last night for a cup of tea and ..............take a
CD player! He is ok, so thats what matters.

I've had a bad head ache for two days now. Was going to go see Mum this weekend to try sort out yet more stuff with Dads pension, and hers.
I closed Dads account which there had been over payments from his pension and dissability living allowance. I paid back these monies but
what remains in there as part of his estate is Mums. I filled out the form took it along to the PO. Mum received a letter saying it was being processed. Now she has a letter saying they can't process it as there is a document they don't have so fill out another form to claim again. It would have helped a lot if they had said what is missing! I will have to phone them. Then there is the matter of Dads private works pension which Mum is now entitled to a percentage of. I thought that was sorted out, but no more problems with that. She is being paid what we consider too much.
Will I ever get to the end of chasing up all these ends? Let alone my own finances. Will this year be as bad as last with one thing after another? I just want to relax

Sorry to hear of all your problems .Whem we loose a loved one we have enough to deal with without all the extra problems .
When my OH died I tried to shut his building society account which was to the value of circa £13 .I had an interim coroners death cert and they wouldn,t accept it !!!

Thanks Maxi for confirming my suspicions on army soldiers. William was discharged in 1803 aged 58 as a sergeant and back then you had to serve at least 21 years so I think William served longer, meaning he must have gone to America with the regiment from 1775-1782.
