did you remember to put .jpeg at the end of the name of all the files? If you dont it dosent always recognise them.

Do you have an option to view all files and are you using the same software as before to view them?

Hi Maddie

Thank you for your quick reply, as far as I can see it is all in .jpg.

When I try to view all files it allow me to view some but on others it says no preview available.

I get that when I forget to put .jpeg at the end of name of the file even though the format below is jpeg if that makes sense.

Does it then come up with another window giving you different programme files that you could use to open them?

You do not need to put "jpeg" Maddie - possibly .jpg but that is merely the file format so would be added automatically, as would .bmp, .gif etc. If they are merely copied as they were from the old PC onto a CD then they should be recognised on the new one.
What you need to do is see if you can open from CD on the old PC. When you view the CD, can you "see" the files even though you cannot open them? And, if so, what is the file extension (the bit after the full stop for each file name)?
There are a number of reasons why this may have happened, one being a dodgy CD, for example.

Although you cannot preview can you not actually open the files?

Well I would listen to Errol over me - I am only saying what happens on mine and Errol has more of a Global view being a more techy person and well known for helping out on tecchy things.

But I do use .Jpeg Errol although the file is jpg.

Maddie you are right in what you say - jpg is the file extension (tells windows what sort of file it is). It comes from the acronym jpeg which stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group and is the picture or photographic equivalent of an mp3 file - I really should get out more! lol
Jan, are you opening on the new or old computer? And what software are you using?

Janette

Janette Report 3 Jan 2008 23:07

opening on new pc with vista

Have you got a word processing or DTP programme on the new computer?

Janette

Janette Report 3 Jan 2008 23:15

Sorry Errol

I am a bit thick with programs.
I have Microsoft works, Works Processor is that what you mean

LOL

ok open up Works' word processor and see if you can open one of the photographs in that - one of the ones you could not open earlier.
To do that, if memory serves me correct, you click on the insert menu (at the top) and select "Picture" and then "From file". You will then have to navigate to the file on the CD - see if that works.
(Apologies if that isn't exactly how the menu looks but I don't have Works in front of me)

sorry to jump in here Errol

but what if Jan installed Picasa 2 and inserted disc, would that not find pics?

I know some do not like Picasa, but it has found all mine that I thought I had lost

Kim

Oh dear Errol

Tried that and it said

"Works cannot insert the selected picture because the picture may not be in the format which can be imported by the word processor. Save the picture in another format, then try inserting it again."

Thanks you

Kim I think Picasa 2.6 is Vista compatible but need to double check.
Jan, if you go to Computer from your Start menu and click on your CD drive can you actually see all of the files listed or only some of them?

Janette

Janette Report 3 Jan 2008 23:40

I can see all the files listed but on about 4 files the pictures cannot be seen, you get the picture number eg DSCN 1129 and jpeg image and size, but no preview.

Am I making sense to you,

Jan x
