i cant remember what it's called , they put the injection
into his back.

Its an epidural, and it works brilliantly.

I was given a sedative as well, and slept through the whole thing. Tell him not to worry, it'll be fine. Had mine done in March.

Hazel,

I had my assessment and they told me I would be in within 4 weeks, I asked to delay until the New Year, so I wouldn't think it would be long otherwise his tests would be out of date :-)

Hazel, it is in his spine but its completely safe hun.

When it first goes in you get a burning feeling in your legs, then they go numb fromthe waist down. I goes off very quickly, once they remove it. They kept mine in for 2 days, reducing it over that time.

Only thing is it made me itch, but they can give piriton for that.

My pre op assessment was two weeks before, I already had the date by then. The anaesthetist put my mind really at ease.

It won't be long then Hazel.

He'll be fine, although it is major surgery it is also routine these days, they know what they're doing, and he'll be amazed at the difference after a few days!

Best thing I ever had done, no more pain on walking, sleeping, sitting moving lol

Can I add to others comments that he will be fine but to remember that he won't know initialy when he needs to pass urine so may be catheterised post op or risk being incontinent. Not trying to alarm but best be prepared. Di (the nurse)

Forgot about that bit (as you do lol)

Yes I had a catheter until the epi had worn off and I was able to get to the loo...so it was about 4 days I think..

My bed was the furthest you could get from the loo in my ward, but at least it was by the window...can't have everything lol

Hi All
iv'e just asked OH again about what was done and said and he said that they couldn't get any blood from him at the Abergele hospital where he is going to have the op so when they finished with him he went on down to the main hospital which is Glan Clwyd and they took his blood so that has to be sent back to the Abergele hospital yet.
so maybe thats why he hasn't had a date .

The nursing and Medical staff won't want the risk of infection from urine getting into the wound. Sorry to be so graphic. lol

Does he know what type of hip replacement it will be? ie metal on plastic, or non-cement ceramic, or metal on metal?
