Does this look a likely line?
You mentioned to me in a PM that there was a supposed Somerset link in case people are wondering why we are scooting off in this direction.

In 1861 your great grandfather James is working away from home. Don't worry...Woolavington and Huntspill are very close and nearly join.

It could be. My father, the youngest of 4 children, was born in 1916. Which would make his father 30 then. That could be correct. Although, Linda has found a 26yr Charles E Wall in Cymmer on the 1901 Census. His eldest child was John C - although my father's brother was named Joe. Again - could be! This is the type of thing I've been up against for the last 2 years. But at least we seem to be getting nearer now. I personally think that I've got to wait for the next census to be put into the public domain before I can double check anything. Sue

The very next thing you should do is get this certificate. It will tell you Charles' father's name so you can then work out which Charles he is

That marriage date makes it look as if he's the one Linda found and not the one whose mother is Ann

Looks as if you've cracked it. Between you - Linda and Susan - you've made an old girl very happy. Certainly I was always told that my g'father's middle name was Edward, but had no proof of that. I was also told he was born in Somerset, but had no proof of that either. You seem to have merged all that info together and come up with an answer. Thank you both very much indeed. Sue

Well if I were you I'd get the certificate of Charles and Mary's marriage asap. You already know for certain that they are your grandparents. Let us know who the certificate says is Charles' father.
He may very well turn out to be related to the Somerset ones I found. Perhaps two brothers moved to Wales at about the same time!
I was just doing a trawl of the 1881 and this one leapt out at me. I wonder if this Walls family should be Wall? Household:

There's a Somerset link again!!! That father's birthplace looks a mistranscription for Wedmore and that is back in the same sort of area.

Thanks Sue - Will do. Interesting that the Charles Wall on this one is classified as a 'scholar' though, - my g'father was illiterate as far as I know. Sue

I thought I'd take a look at the 1851 for Wedmore before I go to bed.
I think it might be useful to take a note in case that Charles Walls is really yours.
The 1851 for Wedmore does not include a single Walls but is positively heaving with people called Wall. If my hunch about John Walls from the 1881 proves to be the right man for Charles' father then I have saved a number of possible Johns of roughly the right age to be him.
