I just had one of those memory flashbacks and wondered if any of you did corking -
it was a cylindrical shaped thingy with 4 pins sticking out one end with a hole going down the middle and your ...erm ....corking stuff came out the bottom hole - er er and I could only make tea cosies?

Beginning to question my sanity now Lol

Mine was an old Cotton reel, with 4 small nails in the top - we called it French Knitting, my best friend was given a 'posh' one shaped like a wooden doll.

You ended up with yards of it!

Oh thank you for all your replies - so I am not going daft then -!

Aha ahem of course I meant to say french knitting Lol

Wonder why Brummie's called it 'corking' and why do the French knit that way? Do they need a lot of tea cosies?

Yes, I made a carpet by waiting until I had a really long bit of the knitting and sewing it into a catherine wheel......when I was about 12.....

I actually found one last year, it is like a wooden doll and I bought it for when my granddaughter is old enough to take interest.....it is still in its box and is made in India, it is called a Pony French Knitter....

My Dad used to put nail tacks (4) in a cotton reel for me and my Sis.....

Sally I do remember having a cotton reel too when my dolly broke. It is a shame it is lost on the kids of today but I'm sure some would like it

Oh just had another memory flashy thing - making pom poms on doughnut-shaped pieces of cardboard!

The cotton reels are plastic now Kaz, I tried knocking some nails in one and it didn't work.....yes and I made pom-poms too....my Mum taught me to knit and the rest.....never any good with crochet though.....

Do you remember the paper flowers in the 70's....?

Deb ( Steel City)

Deb ( Steel City) Report 31 Oct 2007 19:52

oh I had one and it does bring back fond memories. In the summers my mates and I would climb up into our tree house and spend hours corking. It became an obsession and great contest as at the end of each week we would measure to see who's was the longest. We were all working at making one big gigantic rug by putting all our efforts together. Thing is then we argued about whos house would hold this wonderful creation and in the end it never did get made. lol
