We called it french knitting and mine was a wooden cotton reel with 4 nails in the top.Used to use a hair pin or bodkin.

Tatting is done with a small shuttle and fine thread. It is verymuch like macrame but you use your hands and the shuttle to make 'lace'.

As a child I made dolls beds out of empty match boxes and made wool dolls to put in them.
The dolls were made from a few short strands of wool and tied with more wool at the head, neck, arms, body, legs etc....

(showing my age now)

We knew it as corking too Kaz but then grandma was from the Black Country so perhaps that's where it came from, lol. We made pompoms by wrapping wool around the cardboard tops from milk bottles.

oh I had one and it does bring back fond memories. In the summers my mates and I would climb up into our tree house and spend hours corking. It became an obsession and great contest as at the end of each week we would measure to see who's was the longest. We were all working at making one big gigantic rug by putting all our efforts together. Thing is then we argued about whos house would hold this wonderful creation and in the end it never did get made. lol

Sally I do remember having a cotton reel too when my dolly broke. It is a shame it is lost on the kids of today but I'm sure some would like it

Oh just had another memory flashy thing - making pom poms on doughnut-shaped pieces of cardboard!

*still wondering why Brummies called it 'corking'

Yes, I made a carpet by waiting until I had a really long bit of the knitting and sewing it into a catherine wheel......when I was about 12.....

I actually found one last year, it is like a wooden doll and I bought it for when my granddaughter is old enough to take interest.....it is still in its box and is made in India, it is called a Pony French Knitter....

My Dad used to put nail tacks (4) in a cotton reel for me and my Sis.....
