Cumbrian Caz~**~ Report 18 Oct 2007 16:50

Hi all,

My lad Josh had a bad rugby tackle last week end, took a blow to his left ear. He seemed ok but when he got in shower couple of days ago he got water in the ear and was in agony. Took him to docs, given antibiotics and told to come back in a week.

Last night he woke me in tears at 1.30 am and begged me to get him to casualty...once there we had a 3 hour wait!!!!

He was packed off with pain killers and told to go to ENT in morning. They were very good there and syringed ear, checked hearing, he cant hear out of it and gave drops.

Has anyone experience of this?

Love Caz xxx

Hi Caz

my son had a perforated eardrum several years ago and like Josh was in agony. We were on holiday and he was swimming everyday, got home fine and then about 2 days after he had the most awful earache, high temperature etc and when I took him to the Dr's she said his eardrum was badly perforated. She gave him antibiotics and drops and it did heal but took about a week-week and half for his ear to feel completely comfotatble. Now if he gets a cold he suffers with earache in that same ear.Best thing at the mo is to make sure his ear has some cotton wool in it to keep the cold out until it feels better.Put some warm olive oil on the cotton wool-that helps but dont put any in his ear.Poor thing,it really is a painful condition.
Hope he feels better soon

Hi Caz

Poor little mite, hope it feels better soon

It took mine about 2 weeks to stop aching.

Make sure it covered when he goes out, as the cold air can affect it

Caz

If he had a Perforated eardrum trust me they wouldn't of syringed ear, Then its perforated there is a little tear in the eardrum and you don't put anything down there, normally if thats what it is it doesn't affect the hearing.
Hope his feeling better soon

Sorry to hear that Caz. I have no experience of it in myself or my children, but I have heard others saying that it is VERY painful.

Chin up Josh, we are all thinking of you.

Bet that takes the pain away doesn't it?

Just kidding, trying to cheer you up. ;-0)

I am sorry to hear about your son and his ear - nothing worse than pain in your ear is there?

My son is playing rugby tonight and now I am going to forget I just said that lol.

Hope he heals quickly.

Sorry to read of your son's pain Caz.

Alot of it may be due to the injury as well as the actual perforation.
I've had a perforated eardrum for years now and no pain. I've had trouble since being a child and as it is a clean dry break, the ENT chap has decided to leave well alone now as I have nerve damage....nothing to do with the perforation. I have to be careful not to get water in that ear because that would cause greater risk of infection but in a young person there is every good chance that the tear will mend itself and hearing will be restored. While the hole is there, the drum membrane can't vibrate properly so sound can't be relayed. Once the injury heals, everything should be OK.

I wish him a quick recovery.
