You mustnt put cotton wool in your ears because you get little threads of it going into your eardrum.
If you use oil in your ear you are supposed to lie on the other side to let the oil go down and then after a while when you turn the excess can just drip out.
Doctor told me this.
My son has also had lots of ear problems - 9 lots of grommets since he was under 2 ending up with having a mastoidectomy (removal of all the bone behind one ear as it was so badly infected) and skin grafts over the perforations when he was about 17.
Thankfully at 23 he rarely suffers now - cant hear too well though unfortunately - and cant go swimming or diving etc. Still he is healthy and thats all that matters. Carol

My son also had a perforated eardrum when he was younger, due to an ear infection. I finally called the doctor out because he was in so much pain. It did get better after a few days and doesn't bother him at all now.

P.S. Josh, he's 22 now and plays rugby for a living.
