Just had a guy here to look at my oven and be went on that it was a terrible job to do, has to take it apart to thread a wire into the bit were the gas comes out. He may have to order it from Bristol I live in Liverpool. Appox £70 plus. Cooker isn't even three years old yet and cost around £200. Is this a reasonable price?

if its a gas oven wy dioes he need a wire to go in where gas comes out???? sorry am I being really stpid.

His call out fee is probably high with that and the part, it doesn't sound bad.

Mind you I live in the south where everything is expensive........alright if you are rich!!

To put the oven on I push the knob and turn it keeping it pushed in while I light it with a match keeping it pressed in once lit for a few seconds and when I let the knob go it is then lit. Now when I let go the flame and gas go off?
About the wire I don't know and not being rude he was Scottish and I find that accent very hard to follow.

Likely it is the igniter.

Don't be put off by how hard it is - that's his job isn't it? All in cost of £70 doesn't sound unreasonable these days, but check that's what it is you have been quoted, all in.

He just rang me and said he is having a problem getting the part as there is a high demand and will call me back tomorrow. I haven't agreed to let him do it yeat I said I want to know the full price tomorrow.

Any more thoughts? My mum reckons it is too much.

Hi CG, The thought just crossed my mind that if there is a "high demand" for this 'ere bit of wire, maybe the original one was a piece of C----- and I,d be calling the manufacturer and asking for a rebate. lol

Hi CG the problem is since they made it law that all gas fitters have to be corgi registered the prices have shot up.

If we are talking about the oven, and the gas lights with the knob pushed in, but goes out once it is released, then it sounds like the thermocouple is faulty. This is a safety device that is in the flame of the pilot, when the pilot is lit,it heats up and sends an electrical feed to the cooker main gas valve allowing it to open

Albert you seem to know about these things. Do you think £70 plus is a lot to have have it fixed? It cost me about £200 new less than three years ago.

Given that by law only CORGI registered people are allowed to repair gas appliances, your only alternative is to get a second quote, but it is likely to be for a similar amount

It just seems a heck of a lot and he was acting like I would be putting him out! Is it a difficult job? Does anyone know how much the part would be not including labour? I am not being a miser I just don't have much money at the moment and would hate to think I was being ripped off. He may have seen me as easy pray.

It is unlikely that the part itself is more than £5-£10, but you are talking another £50 minimum to come out and fit it.

Sorry, but unless you can find a friend of a friend, this seems to be the going rate these days.
