Is it Brian, I think this guy is trying to make out it is a huge job so he can rip me off.

It sounds as if it's the safety cut-out that has gone (it cuts the gas off if there is no flame unless you are holding the knob down).
It's a little thermostat, basically.

You know what Romany I am thinking about doing the same. Just went on the Beco spare parts site and and found the correct thermocouple for £12.99 and in stock! I hate being messed about.

We've got a problem with ours, takes too long to cook things. So Im just going to buy a new one, the Sainsburys website has excellent value cookers, including silver which I want.

Meryl Report 6 Sep 2007 17:08

The guy who came to look at the cooker finally got back to me today and said that the manufacturer Beko my cooker in Flavel do not have the part in stock and it will be 6-7 weeks! What a joke. I rang another person before who had an advert in the local paper which just said gas cookers fixed and phone number. This woman answered with the phone manners of a dog and said she would get her son o ring me later. Am having second thought, no name or any thing on advert.

CORGI means they are registered gas fitters and are competent to carry out repairs.

Thank you all very much for your thoughts on my cooker. When he rings tomorrow and if the price is no more than around £80 I will have it done. Let you all know tomorrow. Feel less like I am being ripped off now.

Thanks again

The thermocouple (that bit that looks like a bit of wire) will be between £3 and £8,but it's the labour costs that are the killers. I don't know how much they charge in your area, but most domestic appliance repairers will charge around £30 call out fee then say another £30 to come back to fit the part. In the days of mass production sad to say it is often cheaper to replace than repair, a good example are modern flat screen televisions,

InspectorGreenPen Report 3 Sep 2007 18:38

It is unlikely that the part itself is more than £5-£10, but you are talking another £50 minimum to come out and fit it.

Sorry, but unless you can find a friend of a friend, this seems to be the going rate these days.

Meryl

Meryl Report 3 Sep 2007 18:29

It just seems a heck of a lot and he was acting like I would be putting him out! Is it a difficult job? Does anyone know how much the part would be not including labour? I am not being a miser I just don't have much money at the moment and would hate to think I was being ripped off. He may have seen me as easy pray.

Albert

Albert Report 3 Sep 2007 18:13

Given that by law only CORGI registered people are allowed to repair gas appliances, your only alternative is to get a second quote, but it is likely to be for a similar amount

Meryl

Meryl Report 3 Sep 2007 18:06

Albert you seem to know about these things. Do you think £70 plus is a lot to have have it fixed? It cost me about £200 new less than three years ago.

Albert

Albert Report 3 Sep 2007 18:02

If we are talking about the oven, and the gas lights with the knob pushed in, but goes out once it is released, then it sounds like the thermocouple is faulty. This is a safety device that is in the flame of the pilot, when the pilot is lit,it heats up and sends an electrical feed to the cooker main gas valve allowing it to open
