I'm off to but some listerine

Belle56

Belle56 Report 20 Apr 2005 07:55

My grandaughter had a problem with nits, and it cost me a fortune with fancy lotions from the chemist Lyclear, Full Marks, nit combs and conditioner, even went to a health shop and spent around 10 quid on some lotion which had been given a good write up in a newspaper, but to no avail, than some wonderful person on here told me about Listerene, just soak hair and comb through, leave for about 30 mins to an hour and wash off. Nits are attracted to a certain smell that comes from your scalp, it's nothing to do with clean hair /dirty hair, and believe me the smell of Listerene stays on your hair for quite some time, and I can honestly say my grandaugher has never been troubled again, just a quick spray every month keeps the little blighters at bay. Hope this helps someone. Belle.

Don't forget that once you got the walkers out there still the eggs which seem to be stuck on with super glue. I get them out by using my finger nails.

BRING BACK THE GOOD OLD NIT NURSE FOR ROUTINE INSPECTIONS.....................Never mind all political correctness that they plea....as just said irradicate the child abuse that's caused by constantly having nits . for crying out load teachers and the such are not meant to physically comfort a child if they fall and hurt themselves these days what is not going wrong in our schools..... Hi, Surely if a parent continually ignores the problem its like a form of abuse? If you kept a dog flea ridden you'd probably be hauled before the courts by the RSPCA. How can any parent watch a child go through the misery of constant scratching and not deal with it? Perhaps they are trying to deal with it but not sure how to eradicate nits effectively. there is no nit nurse for advice - everything should be washed too - pillows, bedding, towels - and if we had a 'national no nit day' once or twice a year it might help! headlce are rife in my daughters school at the moment, it makes me cross as it can take up to 3 hours to go through her hair as it's so thick and long,it's not the lice but the eggs that are a pain. then you send them to school just for them to bring them back home because all the parents are not checking their own children!!!! Go out and buy a bog standard Tea Tree Oil shampoo, and conditioner if you fancy, and use this all the time. This will do the trick. We get ours from Asda, own-brand.

As nits seemed to be rife in my grandaughters' school, I went to Boots to ask for something with which to treat their hair. The lady I spoke to, told me the hair shouldn't be treated unless they actually had nits. One the one hand, you have the parents who look after their children's hair on a regular basis. On the other hand, you have the minority who just couldn't care less, and don't ever bother to do anything about the problem. I can't see how the schools can get rid of the problem under these circumstances. Joan

i used to use derbac on my girls whenever they got them but it has now given my daughter eczema on her head. i think the best thing to do is to section the hair of and put conditioner on every section(dry hair),comb through and put the things out.then you need to check again seven days later and repeat if necessary. don't think the bit about coloured hair is right though--cause i got them once

it's probably best to go to the doctor to find out what works best in your area as they do become immune to certain lotions and potions. also the reason it's rare to find lice in coloured ( enhanced LoL ) is because peroxide kills them outright and they can't live in the hair.

I think its asda who do a nit hair mousse, you use it like normal mousse. I've been really lucky 3 kids and they've never caught them, but i use tea-tree shampoo all the time, which is suppose to be good, Beve

Angie Report 19 Apr 2005 13:04

Its a vicious circle with nits,I think they are named super nits now because they are immune to all deterants. The cheapest and most reliable way is blather with conditioner and just use nit conb as routine. Angie x

I don't know about you ladies, but I tend to blow dry my hair a couple of times a week and use straighteners virtually every day. I also have a little help from the hairdresser to make my hair a little blonder! lol. I also use spray gel from time to time. I have never once had nits when my kids have had them. I wonder if it's because of all the things I do to my barnet! PS. Linda, I agree Full Marks is useless!

HI I am an expert at this subject my son has had them since chistmas, his school refuses to admit a problem, firstly comb daily even if they do not have nits just to check for them, if nits are found you wil have to use are found some chemicals from the chemist, I have just been into boots they have three main one Full marks - do not wast your money it does not work Lyclear - a conditioner my preferred choice Derbac - this is lotion that you apply overnight I use the two last ones on two week cycles because the eggs are not always killed repat the treatment again after 5-7 days when the head is clear use tea tree shampoo or hair spray as this does not kill the nits but does repell new ones from moving in hope that is of some use Linda P

My daughter has them at the moment. She caught them during the school holidays so I knew it could only be one of two girls she had got them off. When I warned the 2 Mums, the one I suspected just said 'oh she'll have got them of my daughter. She's always got them'. With that sort of attitude, it's no wonder they're rife. She doesn't even tie her daughters hair up! We are combing and conditioning but I quite like the sound of the L'Oreal treatment so I might give that a go. Ooooooo I'm itching like mad now! lol Jeanette x

Have you tried asking the doctor. When my son had problems with them I got fed up spending so much on various lotions etc. And our GP gave us some wonderful stuff that worked and was free [sorry forgotten the name I'm talking 10 years ago]

Deanna Report 19 Apr 2005 12:04

Em C, I have never heard of anything more stupid than that. How do you all manage to keep your children clear if there is no help? There is no shame in having nits, they will leave a dirty head to live on a clean one! Talk aobout PROGRESS?? I must really be getting old!! Deanna :-0)

hi, sorry to point out the obvious, but have you treated the whole family? my neice has the same problem and the school has done all it can by sending letters home to everyone.... thing is as a hairdresser i know how horrid they are. you can try to prevent them by using a leave in conditioner (any will do ) and to treat them i reccomend full marks mouse... make sure everyone in the house is treated and also put some on your hair brush too coz eggs can get everywhere! x

Claire Report 19 Apr 2005 11:52

The lice have a two week life cycle so I religiously combe my daughters hair with a nit combe and conditioner weekly. The preparations from the Chemists are ok Derbac M is the most popular one we sell, but like someone mentioned, they become immune! I'm afraid the only way is to combe combe combe. Par for the course along with coughs. colds, and chicken pox when you have little 'uns. Claire xx
