Lynne, have you reported it to the school? Until THEY get it under control, you never will. I used to go straight up to the school if my kids got them. the Head will then call in a nurse, or what ever they do today, and they will find the source. Good luck. It is no fun is it? Deanna

Sadly Deannna schools dont have nit nurses anymore... and what's worse, they are not allowed to send children home anymore either if they have nits. The children are not allowed to be singled out. You dont have to pay for Nit treatment any more.. or go to the doctors.. Boots the chemists run a scheme called 'Pharmacy first', all you have to do is sign up and they can prescribe the Nit treatment from the pharmacy for free... they claim back from the government the same way the doctor does. This also applies to minor ailments such as coughs etc. Em.

Hi Lynn, There is a battery operated comb available which you use to comb the hair, when it comes into contact with the eggs it zaps them, killing them off. It is not as bad as it sounds and is harmless to us. I purchased one from Betterware and use it once a week for my daughter who has extremely long hair and have had no problems since. Regards Shona

Hi Lynne, I have been very fortunate that my girls have not had them. But whilst buying products for my own hair, my hairdresser told me that this product is amazing when it comes to nits and that alot of her clients buy it for that reason because of word of mouth..It's L'oreal Professional Range :-Liss Extreme, it is actually a Serum for perfect shine but it makes the hair so silky it's very hard for the lice to attach themselves. I haven't used it for that reason, but I can vouch for it being a great product and smells lovely too. It goes on towel dry hair and you don't wash it out..And if you use it on hair with nits they just slip out really easy.. Susie

My niece had this problem a few months ago and someone on here told me to try rinsing her hair with Listermint.....she hasnt had them since! Every week her mum rinses her hair with the mouthwash and leaves it on to dry...washing it off in the morning! Then twice a week before going to school she sprays her hair with half mouthwash and half water then lets it dry! Works for her and she was always getting them! Bev

i have the same prob school say they cant do nothin as the children cant be singled out ........ i did my 2 daughters and myself at the week all was clean and lookin good but hey ho she come home yesterday full of them again im nearin breakin point but as horrible as this sounds ive given up im not wastin my money if no1 else is treatin it . its got to the point where my 4yr old is scared of the nit comb and wont come near me if i have it. limmie the only lotion ive found to work was derbac m but u cant keep usin the same ones as they become immune to them xxx

Claire Report 19 Apr 2005 11:52

The lice have a two week life cycle so I religiously combe my daughters hair with a nit combe and conditioner weekly. The preparations from the Chemists are ok Derbac M is the most popular one we sell, but like someone mentioned, they become immune! I'm afraid the only way is to combe combe combe. Par for the course along with coughs. colds, and chicken pox when you have little 'uns. Claire xx

hi, sorry to point out the obvious, but have you treated the whole family? my neice has the same problem and the school has done all it can by sending letters home to everyone.... thing is as a hairdresser i know how horrid they are. you can try to prevent them by using a leave in conditioner (any will do ) and to treat them i reccomend full marks mouse... make sure everyone in the house is treated and also put some on your hair brush too coz eggs can get everywhere! x

Deanna Report 19 Apr 2005 12:04

Em C, I have never heard of anything more stupid than that. How do you all manage to keep your children clear if there is no help? There is no shame in having nits, they will leave a dirty head to live on a clean one! Talk aobout PROGRESS?? I must really be getting old!! Deanna :-0)

Have you tried asking the doctor. When my son had problems with them I got fed up spending so much on various lotions etc. And our GP gave us some wonderful stuff that worked and was free [sorry forgotten the name I'm talking 10 years ago]

My daughter has them at the moment. She caught them during the school holidays so I knew it could only be one of two girls she had got them off. When I warned the 2 Mums, the one I suspected just said 'oh she'll have got them of my daughter. She's always got them'. With that sort of attitude, it's no wonder they're rife. She doesn't even tie her daughters hair up! We are combing and conditioning but I quite like the sound of the L'Oreal treatment so I might give that a go. Ooooooo I'm itching like mad now! lol Jeanette x

Linda Report 19 Apr 2005 12:56

HI I am an expert at this subject my son has had them since chistmas, his school refuses to admit a problem, firstly comb daily even if they do not have nits just to check for them, if nits are found you wil have to use are found some chemicals from the chemist, I have just been into boots they have three main one Full marks - do not wast your money it does not work Lyclear - a conditioner my preferred choice Derbac - this is lotion that you apply overnight I use the two last ones on two week cycles because the eggs are not always killed repat the treatment again after 5-7 days when the head is clear use tea tree shampoo or hair spray as this does not kill the nits but does repell new ones from moving in hope that is of some use Linda P

I don't know about you ladies, but I tend to blow dry my hair a couple of times a week and use straighteners virtually every day. I also have a little help from the hairdresser to make my hair a little blonder! lol. I also use spray gel from time to time. I have never once had nits when my kids have had them. I wonder if it's because of all the things I do to my barnet! PS. Linda, I agree Full Marks is useless!

Its a vicious circle with nits,I think they are named super nits now because they are immune to all deterants. The cheapest and most reliable way is blather with conditioner and just use nit conb as routine. Angie x

I think its asda who do a nit hair mousse, you use it like normal mousse. I've been really lucky 3 kids and they've never caught them, but i use tea-tree shampoo all the time, which is suppose to be good, Beve
