Happy Wanderer No, cysts are not painful. At least mine were not. Usually they were filled with fluid and could be drained, although I did have one that was fibrous when I was quite young, which I had to have cut out. The lump I had with breast cancer also wasn't painful. I think if your lump is causing some discomfort it is more likely to be something that has become inflamed than anything sinister. Although, you are right to go and get it checked out at the doctors. Hope everything works out ok. Thinking of you :-) xxxx Jenny

I don't normally check mine, but if you know any young ladies who want theirs checked send them along and I will happily oblige. Seriously though girls, it is important to check your health in all ways, not just looking for breast cancer.

my partner at the time found my lump when i was 20. it was only a cyst but was very painful and with working as a care assistant at the time i kept banging it. i had fluid taken off it at hospital who said it all seemed fine , but because of the pain and discomfort it was causing i had a lumpectomy. only problem i had was falling pregnant not long after and it hasnt let the scar tissue heal properly. i do check mine but they always feel the same - i didnt even know i had one until partner had pointed it out and even then i had problems. with having problems in the family i made sure i had went to doctors right away though. i nag my future husband to check himself aswell though as men are normally not bothered about things like that. annie

I had myself checked out by my doctor end of last year - I jumped two cup sizes in the space of a few months and kept getting pains in my boobs and decided to get it checked out, it turned out that my bra wasnt supportive enough, so straight away I got rid of my wonder bra and went for a 'bolder holder' and theyve been fine ever since :-) Karen

I check mine everyday in the shower. Doesnt take 2 seconds and its well worth checking like that if there is anything you can get it checked out straight away.

What concerns me is that scans only begin at age 50 (unless of course there is family history) and cease at 60 BUT they can continue if you request them. How many women know this and request? I write it on the calender each year so I do not forget to request every 3 years. Ann

Oh Yeah I have regular checks as my mum died from breast cancer & my sister had a mastectomy last Wednesday. My other sister had a lump removed about 6 wks ago as well but lucky for her it was just a calcified lump. I am not taking any chances. Please anyone who does not do regular checks start doing so now as it is not fun losing a boob even worse losing you life. Love Cilla
