In 1964 my parents paid £3600 for their Essex semi. They couldn't afford the one they really wanted as it was £4000. They're still living in it now and hoping to sell it next year to move closer to us. I think they're in for quite a nice surprise - until they see the price of the houses here! Daisy |

£42,000 for a 1930s mid-terrace 3-bed house with a long garden. Bought in 1986. We rented it out for a year when we bought our current house (£205,000) five years ago this week. We sold it for £120,000. This is about the amount my husband and his brother got after his parents died and they sold the family home - but that house (semi-detached 1950s, small garden) cost £1,000 in 1953! M-i-l remembers thinking 3% interest on the mortgage was extortionate. Husband and I were paying about 15% in the 1980s!!! nell |

We paid £80K for our first house together in June 1998, 4 bedroomed Victorian Terrraced house. Sold it after exactly five years to the day, last June, for £265K. Yes that is the truth, we have been very lucky. Down sized and bought semi for £201K. Doubt if it has gone up much since being here though. Jenny. |

Bought our previous house 2 up 2 down, at the back of Thorpe Park in 1981 for £25,000, sold it 7 years later for £66,000 (cash buyer into the bargain!), they are now going for £195,000! Purchased this one, as we are still in it from 1987, for £87,000, now worth £275,000. Love this house and area, so will be staying put for a lot more years yet! Kim |
