Bought our previous house 2 up 2 down, at the back of Thorpe Park in 1981 for £25,000, sold it 7 years later for £66,000 (cash buyer into the bargain!), they are now going for £195,000! Purchased this one, as we are still in it from 1987, for £87,000, now worth £275,000. Love this house and area, so will be staying put for a lot more years yet! Kim

We paid £80K for our first house together in June 1998, 4 bedroomed Victorian Terrraced house. Sold it after exactly five years to the day, last June, for £265K. Yes that is the truth, we have been very lucky. Down sized and bought semi for £201K. Doubt if it has gone up much since being here though. Jenny.

£42,000 for a 1930s mid-terrace 3-bed house with a long garden. Bought in 1986. We rented it out for a year when we bought our current house (£205,000) five years ago this week. We sold it for £120,000. This is about the amount my husband and his brother got after his parents died and they sold the family home - but that house (semi-detached 1950s, small garden) cost £1,000 in 1953! M-i-l remembers thinking 3% interest on the mortgage was extortionate. Husband and I were paying about 15% in the 1980s!!! nell

In 1964 my parents paid £3600 for their Essex semi. They couldn't afford the one they really wanted as it was £4000. They're still living in it now and hoping to sell it next year to move closer to us. I think they're in for quite a nice surprise - until they see the price of the houses here! Daisy

We paid £4150 for our 3 bed mid terraced house with garage & central heating(much to the envy of my mum in her draughty victorian terrace in Se London) in 1967. It was a brand new house on a new developement in Kent We still here & the houses now are being snapped up as soon as they come on market as are large & have resonable gardens . They sell now for around £195000. Shirley

Lucky Report 5 Jul 2005 20:14

We paid just over £16,000 in 1982 for a 2 bedroom terraced house in Colchester. Took every penny we had saved to fill the gap between the mortgage we could get and the price. Sold it for £49,500 in 1988. Put all the profit on another house nearby and had another mortgage and lost the lot. Prices went down and when we sold 10 years later in 1998 we got £2,500 less than we paid for it!!
