Be careful what you wish for - the NHS was built on an ideal of greater compassion, that no-one should go without the basic necessities of life. Look at what life is like in other countries where there is no support system. Even here in the USA millions have no health cover, millions of children even have no basic dental care and the immigration system is broken. Soon it will be so hard to get in - or take so long - that no-one will want to bother. The Patriot Act has been a nightmare all in the name of 'security' (read 'more power for the politicians'). Our ID cards are simply our driving licenses (you can get a basic ID card if you don't drive) - about the only sensible thing that I would wish to export to Britain so far as this topic of conversation is concerned. |

Don't know about everyone else, but I can't afford a passport, let alone ID card too!! The thing is, I reckon i'd be told i'd have to pay (hubby works - silly him!) yet the ones who really should carry them would I suspect get them for free!! If the Government will issue them free to all of us, then I have no problem with carrying one. Oh, but I object to them 'selling' information about me from my card to other 'interested' parties!! Did anyone else know that's what they are intending to do? ;0) Joan |

After reading Karen's reply maybe we need a shake-up of our benefits system too? Rob - I know what you mean about stable door and horse, but better late than never springs to mind also? Kaye x |

ID cards will do nothing to stop illegal immigrants or terrorists. All you have to do is to get a false passport in a foreign country and come to the UK as a tourist or as a student, or a seasonal worker. Then disappear. |

good point.i know with 9/11 the terrorist some of the terrorist applied i can only guess a visa to go to university for a certain length of time.i think the majority on the flights were being educated in germany.so to combat all terrorism you would have to have id cards in all countries.an impossible task.do many countries have thisid system.i think america do don't they???xxx(: |

I know Lisa - but it's got to be fair and I think that is the only fair way of doing it. I wouldn't be happy to carry the cost of all the extra id cards that were given to people on benefits - we are already overtaxed! Kaye x |

I think perhaps we are doing too little too late - most of these terrorists are 'home grown' (see another thread). Lisa - that would be a good idea. Whether they receive tax credits or just benefits, the instalments could be taken from that. The rest of us could either pay extra tax for the year or set up direct debits? My Husband is totally against ID cards - he feels he will loose his freedom. But I for one am prepared to sacrifice a little bit of freedom for a bit more safety. Kaye x |

I don't understand how these people manage to get in in the first place......some guys (2) from Grenada (a Commonwealth Country) went to England for a holiday and were turned back at the Airport because they were told they were not allowed to work in England.....they were going for a holiday!!!!!......A friend from here who is from Guyana (was British) had to get a Visa to go to England..... My husband when we came last year for a holiday....had to have all sorts of paperwork - a letter from where we were staying....a letter from the bank to make sure he had enough money!!! We got all sorts of references from friends in England including one from a Chief Constable!!! All to make sure he had no trouble.....I even travelled on my Grenadian Passport so that I would be with him at Immigration because he was so worried they would turn him back...... And then these things! Can be in our Country and do this evil!!! HOW!!!!!???????? Jacquie xxxx |

I suppose if the Government issue ID cards for free then they will just take the money from somewhere else - we will end up paying for them ultimately. Maybe a system similar to what you suggested Lisa would work - if we had a year to pay for them in instalments? But I do beleive that EVERYONE should pay in this instance, with the exception of children and maybe pensioners. What does everyone else think? Kaye x |

Lisa - I agree with taking the money for ID cards over a year, to a point. If they take it from our taxes then that means that those who don't pay taxes won't have to pay and that those of us who do will have to pay more to cover theirs. I do agree that children should have free ID cards though. Kaye x |
