I have been moaning about immigration for years - this country is a soft target, it is so easy to get into. I have no objection to anyone coming to this country providing that they will contribute something to it - we need to be more like Australia and America. I believe that if we had tightened up on immigration years ago that we wouldn't have such problems now - as has been stated in another thread, these terrorists are 'home grown'. Kaye x

i agree with what you have said.it is about time the goverement concentrated on the safety of the british people before they deal with others coming in from different countriesxxx):

Definitely. I'd be happy to carry an ID card if it meant that we were safer in many respects. Not entirely happy about what they want to charge us for them, but that's a different matter! Mandy :)

I'm all for ID cards However what if these fanatics are born & bred here on our own soil as so much talk has suggested - will there be any loop holes? will they be water tight? will these people care? Passports are one of the highest form of ID however they too have their loop holes! ID fraud happens all too easily. Much happiness Debi

Chaps, Be careful what you wish for yourself ... the ID cards were purported to be planned to have chips in them ... this would mean that we could be tracked down wherever we are by Big Brother. Would you be happy with this? Jane PS: Even with tighter immigration, there will still be illegals getting in somehow .... but in principle, agree with more controls to protect the indiginous poplulation.

yes and yes. although I still dont think we should have to pay up to £100 for the id cards

Lisa Report 8 Jul 2005 12:16

hi mandy.i too would begrudge paying the cost.what tghe goverment should do is issue id cards and gradually take the cost out on peoples tax.not one lump sum.people will struggle to pay for them otherwise.if the goverment do want all that money and people can't pay.what will they do reposses property take people to court.there would be an uproar.i for one would find it acceptale to have that money taken added on my tax over a space of a year.also i feel that childrens id cards should be freexxxxxx(:

Lisa Report 8 Jul 2005 12:19

paul would you pay if like i said for it to be takenout of your pay over a period of a year?i think i would be happy with that.aso i feel childrens id cards should be free.would that still deter terrorists even if they are visiting the country.what would hapen there??xxx(:

Phoenix Report 8 Jul 2005 12:33

Lisa - I agree with taking the money for ID cards over a year, to a point. If they take it from our taxes then that means that those who don't pay taxes won't have to pay and that those of us who do will have to pay more to cover theirs. I do agree that children should have free ID cards though. Kaye x

see your point kayla.xxxx(:

I suppose if the Government issue ID cards for free then they will just take the money from somewhere else - we will end up paying for them ultimately. Maybe a system similar to what you suggested Lisa would work - if we had a year to pay for them in instalments? But I do beleive that EVERYONE should pay in this instance, with the exception of children and maybe pensioners. What does everyone else think? Kaye x

Lisa Report 8 Jul 2005 12:42

maybe people on benefits should have their instalments taken out of their tax credit???do they get that??xxx(:

I don't understand how these people manage to get in in the first place......some guys (2) from Grenada (a Commonwealth Country) went to England for a holiday and were turned back at the Airport because they were told they were not allowed to work in England.....they were going for a holiday!!!!!......A friend from here who is from Guyana (was British) had to get a Visa to go to England..... My husband when we came last year for a holiday....had to have all sorts of paperwork - a letter from where we were staying....a letter from the bank to make sure he had enough money!!! We got all sorts of references from friends in England including one from a Chief Constable!!! All to make sure he had no trouble.....I even travelled on my Grenadian Passport so that I would be with him at Immigration because he was so worried they would turn him back...... And then these things! Can be in our Country and do this evil!!! HOW!!!!!???????? Jacquie xxxx

I think perhaps we are doing too little too late - most of these terrorists are 'home grown' (see another thread). Lisa - that would be a good idea. Whether they receive tax credits or just benefits, the instalments could be taken from that. The rest of us could either pay extra tax for the year or set up direct debits? My Husband is totally against ID cards - he feels he will loose his freedom. But I for one am prepared to sacrifice a little bit of freedom for a bit more safety. Kaye x

Lisa

Lisa Report 8 Jul 2005 12:55

only thing is kayla people on benefits will not be happy with that.xxxx):

Phoenix

Phoenix Report 8 Jul 2005 12:58

I know Lisa - but it's got to be fair and I think that is the only fair way of doing it. I wouldn't be happy to carry the cost of all the extra id cards that were given to people on benefits - we are already overtaxed! Kaye x
