Harry Report 13 Jul 2005 10:49

Over the past year there have been several WELL MEANING threads re Police stopping young people; coloured people. ID cards'; Surveillance cameras; someone knocked Enoch Powells brief mention to 'rivers of blood'. I am absolutely no radical, but I thought that to point out that there are two sides to every story would not go amiss. We live in a funny world. Don,t tell me that ID cards wouldn,t have prevented the latest atrocity - we didn,t know that 24 hours ago and still don,t in the case of the fourth man and organisors of the plot. Happy days. I hope..

After last Thursday, life will never be the same and neither should it be. Radical changes are called for and I.D. cards is one of the ways we can protect ourselves. Having been in the centre of the atrocities, and felt the great fear and outrage, I would even advocate bringing back the birch or more.... BC

but how would ID cards have stopped this, nobody was checked in London for their ID were they?? There will always be people who get through the net .

Harry I entirely agree with Buttercup. It is no good pussyfooting around sensitive issues any longer. Bring back stiff sentences for terrorists and their friends(I see the BBC do not want them called terrorists.)Bring back the cane in schools and the birch for the so called ASBO types. ASBo's are useless and its about time the powers of this country listened to the old folk who in are the main the targets of these scum. In fact terror is now the dominant subject of most newspaper reports these days be it terrorist activities or attacks by hooded yobs on people protecting their property. The 'do gooders ' have led the country down the road we are now on and its about time their thinking was overturned. Rupert

Thanks for your replies. Valerie, Mentioned ID cards above. You couldn,t have said that 24 hours ago. In this case, false passports are akin and the organisors possibly used them. Happy days

Agree entirely with the issue of ID cards... same with DNA ... if people have nothing to hide they will accept it without question... It is not a case of' Big Brother is Watching You'... it is for us to feel safe in our country and within our families. A lot of issues could be solved with a central computer holding everyones DNA. Just the same with ID. We need to secure our country and our families from the likes of those who wish us harm. Anne :))

I completely agree that ID cards are becoming essential but I am not sure how they could have prevented the atrocity that we have seen in the last week. As for punishments being harsher..... ABSOLUTELY - we now have a society that is ruled by values that make no sense whatsoever!! Why can't a parent smack their child if that child misbehaves? It certainly never did me any harm!! But then saying that the worst thing that could've happened to me as would have been my mother saying 'I'm going to tell your Dad' cos just one disappointed look from him would crucify me!!

Lady Liberty, Appreciate what you are saying. But f you were at atube station yesterday morning, who would you have been keeping an eye out for. Were the police studying the camera pictures racist? happy days

Bobtanian Report 13 Jul 2005 11:23

I dont believe that ID cards would have prevented that atrocity, ( unless they were already being watched) I personally am not against ID cards, as such........what DOES concern me, is the info that they might propose to put on it, and who exactly would be authourised to demand to see it? Then what would they do with it? to check biometrics, fingerprints, or whathaveyou, there would be the need for every bobby to carry scanners and the like.......it takes about ten times as long to make a transaction, with a chip n pin card......how long to check an ID card? I wonder.. There was a news Item yesterday, that Dog/Animal microchips are failing........how long will this new ID card technology last, before it needs an upgrade? A sceptical Bob

Harry Im not for one minute suggesting you are racist, I wanted clarification of what a coloured person looked like, (in your opinion). As for who I would be looking for in the Tube station, any body that looked suspicious whether they be black, mixed race or white! And unfortunately there is plenty of racism within our british police force's! Lib

I have no problem with ID cards or any other security measures. I have nothing to hide and do not regard it as an invasion of my civil liberties. Not sure that ID cards would necessarily have prevented last week's terrorist attacks but I see no reason not to have them. What concerns me is the cursory glance given to most passports at airports. Frankly it's a disgrace and the security checks are abysmal except in the UK. On a lighter note, I still measure my actions according to my Dad's approval rating and I'm 44 next week! Daisy

Hi Everyone, What we are experiencing today in our society are direct results of our liberal attittues of the 60. I for one listened to Enoch Powell and remember having a dreadful argument with my step father who had not studied his speach in detail. Unfortunately the govts, and I include all parties in this, have let in too many peoples from other nations and we have been unable to absorb them all and offer them a descent standard of living and status within our society. Many of their young are now dissillusioned and have been turned by agitators who have been allowed into this country to spill poison into young and impressionable minds. Our whole society has plummeted since we were young in the fifties and sixties. We have bred a generation of those who expect to sit with their hands out and for the govt to fill them. There is too much talk of RIGHTS and no talk of RESPONSIBILITY. Children produce children and expect the state to support them.Have you played hunt the wedding ring on your local High Street.I counted 9 unmarried mothers and babies in the length of one 100 yds. These children grow up disassociated from family life and have no male role models. They in turn will repeat the process. WE HAVE NURTURED A BLAME CULTURE . Common sense and a responsibility for our own safety has gone. The young now see adverts encouraging them to sue and get compensation. How stupid THE YOUNG HAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP TO EXPECT INSTANT GRATIFICATION. Whether this be through overuse of credit to acquire what we would have saved for until we could afford it.And then have valued, not changed in a year or so because it was no longer fashionable. We have an increase in rape and assaults against women and children and paedophiles entrap using the net. Yet we dress our young in provocative clothing which leaves little to the imagination. The word SEXY is used to describe anything from toiletries to household cleaners. Yobbish and Laddish culture and behaviour is admired and emulated.Respect for family and older people is at an all time low.

Harry, As law-abiding citizens, neither I, nor my family, would object to ID cards if they were compulsory, but we wouldn't voluntarily carry them because of the risk to our own security if those cards fell into the wrong hands. We are already told that identity theft is a big issue and there are even people who will raid household rubbish bins to obtain a cover identity for unlawful purposes. An ID card would need to have very sophisticated means of storing fingerprints and iris scans before it would be entirely useless to wily fraudsters, which would, of course, be extremely expensive. Apart from that, I agree with others' posts that 'homegrown' terrorism would not be stopped by ID cards. It's only resorting to what the USA now does - checking EVERYBODY coming into the country - and tightening illegal entries to the country that would help. Our security forces need to know who is in the country, who is arriving and who is leaving, and to keep strict tabs on suspicious individuals. It's my belief that such measures are decades too late in any event. I don't know what the answer is - I just hope those in power do! CB >|<

Rose I couldnt agree with you more! Society is what man/woman have made it. Whilst I believe in the freedom of equality and speach for all, I feel more stronger about the self responsibility that comes with it. If people could only see how liberating it is to take responsibility for their own actions and not to fall into the 'blame syndrome' the world would be a much more peaceful place to live! Lib

Hi everyone. Ramblin Rose,I have just read your reply and am annoyed enough to reply.Walking up and down counting who has wedding rings on and dosen't is a sad passtime. Who are you to judge and make remarks about single parents their children and their income? I had been married for 10 years and had 5 children. Both myself and my ex had good jobs.No dept,a mortgage,a car all the happy bits of life.Except love. He took a knife one night and used it on me.Why did he do it? because I was leaving him and he,get this...didn't want the people he worked with, who didn't like him, to laugh at him and tell him he couldn't even keep his wife. Needless to say, when I got out of hospital,I did leave him and the ring was threw away.I have been with another man for the past 10 years and still do not wear a ring.I personally know a woman who had a young family and her husband was killed on christmas eve.She dosen't take her ring off.You really shouldn't judge or talk about these women. Not all single parents live on benifits and want hand outs.Quite a lot do actually pay their tax and live as 'normal married women 'live. The only difference...They aren't actually married. Hop-a-long
