Yet another person has been suspended from S & N Name Indexes because they have been doing lookups on this site. GenesReUnited have been mentioned on the e.mail as the source of information. The person suspended has NOT been offering lookups ... but has still been found out because the person HAS been answering requests on the boards. PLEASE folks ... BECAREFUL. Most of you know that I myself was also caught a few months ago ... which is one of several reasons I no longer 'offer' lookup... but it hits hard when your subscriptions are suspended ... especially when you have paid up front a year in advance. I don't understand it. WE pay, so WE should be able to do what we want with it. This site is for helping each other isn't it? I don't actually do look ups for others, but that is because I'm hard pressed to do my own. Gets a bit confusing for me ( I'm an eejit see?)lol I have though been helped an awful lot by people on this site. Deanna x

A lot of people who do 'lookups' on census's 1841 & 1851 are doing so from disc's .... and could be using disc's purchased from S & N Genealogy. There are also people able to search Name Indexes for these same census's ... and they may be using the Name Indexes from S & N Gen. The people who this concerns will understand what I am saying. thats awful. There are alot of people on this site who haven't been doing their tree long (including myself) and rely on others, (not just because they have the subscription) as i will always pay for one, but because they have the experiance. I was looking for a certain family member for weeks. I asked on the tips board and got my answer within 10 mins, (the person i was looking for had the surname mispelled), but i would have never known that. and it doesn't matter how many subscriptions i have!!!! Hi Elaine Bit unfair that isn't it!! I will continue doing look-ups and no-one can stop me because I don't use the S&N Indexes. So they can whistle!! Linda x

I'm not with you on this at all..... Does this mean that when I ask someone to look at 1841 census for me, them giving me the info, if it is from an S & N disc is actually illegal? God help us!! In response to Linda, I won't be buying S & N products then, because the temptation to help others may overwhelm me; in view of the help i've received in the past from some very kind people!!! :0( Joan

Surely if someone asked for a look up, all the you have to do is send the info via email - no one would know then, would they???? jude sarf wales

Hi Jude, I think the only way IS to send the ansa via PM ... but then none of us would know if the request has been answered etc ... and the poor person doing the requesting would be inundated by PM's. I haven't done any further work for S & N since I was suspended ... and I refuse point blank to purchase anything further from them. I'll wait, bide my time and when Ancestry has ALL the census's online, then I'll pay them instead (even with the mistranscriptions :-( Elaine :-)

A couple of times I have been tempted to buy from S&N but having seen that they hold you to a licence I will not buy. not if you can't use the disc to help others. Also isn't it right that if you have finished your research you have to get permission to be able to sell your discs on. So you may have finished with it yourself but aren't allowed to help any one else, no like someone else I will wait till ancestry have the 41/51 census, £70 a year is better than paying about £50 for something that is only for one year and county. All census cd makers, not just S&N bar look ups from there discs, the reason being they pay the goverment thousands of pounds for the census images and everybody that gets a free image, rather than buying the cd is taking money from them and if enough do it, they may not recover there outlay, the census image is copyrighted, and it is illegal to send images as people often do on here from Ancestry, i would not be supprised if Ancestry dont start looking at the large amounts of unrelated images some people are downloading, that are not from a family line and they could well suspend subscriptions, the fact you have paid them subs, only covers you for personal research and not licence to supply everybody, they want there investment paying, its all about money.

hi elaine, i do hope the person concerned has got every branch of their tree back to the dooms day book, because if their name ever becomes public knowledge- i doubt they will ever get any help from on here again ! small minded *^&%$ sue.

Sue you will probably find it is from somebody at the company itself, i a couple of years ago asked the webmaster of the Derbyshire Look up exchange, if i could do look ups from the 1861 census, and she emailed me back saying if it was from a cd disc, the owner of a well known census cd makers (whom i know comes on here) had told her nobody could use his products for this, and so she could not. so i now do all look ups at the local lbrary and have boycoted all products by this firm, but they are all the same. may be if they charged afiver each we would all buy a copy.

just when you think its a free country, ha i dont understand why they ban someone from helping others its so mean, if i had the knowledge id share it

Julie Ann In this free Country, you can not help your freinds by copying the latest films and music cds, this is what you are doing with there discs, would you buy a car for £60,000 and then leave it outside your house for anybody passing to use for free.
