S&N are a business and clearly aren't going to like it if people infringe their copyright and potentially damage their sales. It's the same reason Ancestry/GaleGroup got shirty when people posted passwords to use Ancestry for free: people won't buy what they can get for nothing. Of course the companies are going to track culprits down. However, I was under the impression that if A had the discs, then they could not offer a look-up, but they could respond to B's plea *as long as* the information was transcribed from the image by A, and no image of the census was passed on. Copyright exists on the format of the census, not the information contained therein. It seems people get caught two ways: the first is by using their real names on the boards, which are then checked against a subscription list; the second is, as Gary suggested, unusual usage patterns. I don't know if GR would have to surrender personal details if another company requested it, but probably 'yes' as it would relate to a legal matter.

Blimey! Have read all your replies and am mind blown. I must admit, I have been 'chary' of putting info anywhere on this site in case it was misused. I really only came into GR to find an adopted rellie - no success so far! However, I find all the threads very entertaining on this Board Thanks everyone1 Lily

Hi Derek, To answer YOUR particular question, when you purchase anything from S & N, they obviously have a record of your details .. especially e.mail etc. In these two cases ... mine and this latest person's, we actually do name indexing (I DID - NOT any more) for this company. The company can see how many times you log onto the website and use the subscriptions ( in this case, the Name Indexing) that you have earnt or paid for... and then if you OVER use your subscriptions, they start asking questions. The person who was suspended yesterday, has had to send a copy of all the names in the Family Tree - and S & N has compared them to the names that have been looked up on the Name Indexing site. The sad thing about this incident is that the person who has been suspended this time, has transcribed in excess of over 50 pieces from the census's ... this information is then sold at £10 per time for one disc. Making a very healthy profit from our hard work. In this instance, this person was using a Name Indexing facility that they had PAID to access at £45 per year and they aren't even complete ... I've had a few free lifts from taxi drivers too - but maybe they had an ulterior motive. (Many years ago one driver used to park up and wait for me) Beth :0

A well Known Census Cd Maker, S & N are one of a number of companies doing this, put S & N census cds in Google and you will find all you want to know

No-one has answered the question someone put on here, Who are S & N.

Gary

Gary Report 11 Aug 2005 23:01

Beth its not about what you or I would do, the census cd makers would not give any one a lift, going that way or not, a bit like a taxi driver would not, its there living, its how they make there money.

Julie Ann In this free Country, you can not help your freinds by copying the latest films and music cds, this is what you are doing with there discs, would you buy a car for £60,000 and then leave it outside your house for anybody passing to use for free.

Gary Report 11 Aug 2005 21:39

Sue you will probably find it is from somebody at the company itself, i a couple of years ago asked the webmaster of the Derbyshire Look up exchange, if i could do look ups from the 1861 census, and she emailed me back saying if it was from a cd disc, the owner of a well known census cd makers (whom i know comes on here) had told her nobody could use his products for this, and so she could not. so i now do all look ups at the local lbrary and have boycoted all products by this firm, but they are all the same. may be if they charged afiver each we would all buy a copy.

Thanks gary, that just about sums it up x JoJo ... S & N genealogy is the name of a company that sells Genealogical items. Google the name and up it comes. Dancer x

Gary

Gary Report 11 Aug 2005 21:03

All census cd makers, not just S&N bar look ups from there discs, the reason being they pay the goverment thousands of pounds for the census images and everybody that gets a free image, rather than buying the cd is taking money from them and if enough do it, they may not recover there outlay, the census image is copyrighted, and it is illegal to send images as people often do on here from Ancestry, i would not be supprised if Ancestry dont start looking at the large amounts of unrelated images some people are downloading, that are not from a family line and they could well suspend subscriptions, the fact you have paid them subs, only covers you for personal research and not licence to supply everybody, they want there investment paying, its all about money.

Germaine

Germaine Report 11 Aug 2005 20:57

A couple of times I have been tempted to buy from S&N but having seen that they hold you to a licence I will not buy. not if you can't use the disc to help others. Also isn't it right that if you have finished your research you have to get permission to be able to sell your discs on. So you may have finished with it yourself but aren't allowed to help any one else, no like someone else I will wait till ancestry have the 41/51 census, £70 a year is better than paying about £50 for something that is only for one year and county.
