A 12 year old girl has contacted her local council to complain about the planned construction of a sex shop on her local High Street. She claims it will encourage paedophiles and perverts to the area. What do you think?

Are you telling me that there are shops where one can buy sex? Do they cater for all, or is it Unisex?

Seriously though, I have known of the existence of sex shops for many years. There used to be one in Birmingham on the way to Dudley Road Hospital. The windows were blacked out and there was a big notice telling under 18s to keep out. There were some shifty-looking men in and out of there, but that was probably because they knew that Society didn't totally approve of the existence or patronage of such Emporia. I don't think it will encourage Perverts and Paedophiles to be drawn away from School Playgrounds just because it sells sex aids and naughty knickers, but if it does, at least there will be a location where they may be easily identified and watched.

I know of many 'normal' people who shop in Sex Shops and they're not perverts or paedophiles, there's nothing wrong with sex! I think it's good this young girl is socially aware and feels comfortable voicing her opinion even if I disagree with it.

cant see a problem with them meself. sex shops that is. its amazing how many people think these places are disgusting dens of iniquity and yet there are very few people who havent enjoyed the pursuit that adults follow behind closed doors. i cant see a link between these scurges on society and the opening of a sex shop. if anything it might help to keep tabs on these filthy vermin by their actions in the shop.

I agree with whats been said (I've said that already today I know). I don't follow the arguement. Is the girl sayign that anyone who uses a sex shop is a paedophile or pervert ? There's on near here, have seen it as I drove past, haven't been in, but haven't seen queues of perverts hanging around it either. What's her view on the Ann Summers shops popping up in every high street I wonder.

Hi Bec I heard the interviews too and thought the girl's mother needed a good hard slap. It's obviously a good thing that a girl of 12 has opinions but it did seem as if she had got the line of thinking from her uptight mother. A 12 year old can't have a reasoned and informed debate on sex shops because she has no experience of life and hopefully no experience of sex and this was demonstrated by her 'padeophiles and perverts' argument. When challenged she actually started to backtrack anyway and said she had spoken in the extreme. I thought it was in pretty poor taste for the mother to let her daughter go on radio to take part in a debate with adults about something she has no understanding of. Did you hear the comments from the bloke who runs a sex shop in Manchester? He was quite justifiably livid that he was by inference being accused of running a business for paedophiles. Both he and the applicant spoke very well and the applicant said he could open an Ann Summers type unlicensed place no problem but preferred to have a fully licensed shop. I've never seen a sex shop that sells anything that would interest a paedophile. Peoples definitions of what is perverse are all different of course. Sex shops are good things, especially if not taken too seriously:) Nothing wrong in buying things to boost your sex life. Did you not think the whole thing smacked of 'sex shops are fine but not in our high street'?

I have to agree with David. When I first read Becx's message my first thought was that the mother was using the girl as her mouthpiece.
