Pat Maybe many do use it as a tax dodge giving cash to charities, but the Beckhams also give their time to those charitable cases, and have given a lot of their time and effort in helping individual cases. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yes I do think they are extravagant, they spend their money on the daftest of things...but if you had money to burn, and had earned it, why not buy what you want. I certainly would... Elaine x

well what a pointless list. a few comments. Victoria Beckham ? Yes, she's a complete waste of space, but it's the media's obsession with keeping her in the papers that has exaggerated her celebrity status. Jordan ? complete waste of space. Ditto for Jodie Marsh, Abi Titmuss etc I don't think however, that either David Beckham or Tony Blair should be in this list. Tony Blair is the Prime Minister of this country, and whether we think he's doing a good job of it or not, he's certainly not a 'pointless celebrity'. His wife on the other hand... As for David Beckham... yes, OK, his celebrity is exagerrated, and he does seem to enjoy that, but he's not the first footballer to be in that position (George Best ?), but at least he sets a fairly positive example to kids most of the time (apart from the sex scandals lol), you don't hear about him being involved in drink/drugs etc. I read today that he's about to open another soccer school. I also know from my links with amateur football that he's very well thought of at the clubs where he played as a child, and has helped those clubs out on several occasions. I don't really understand why being a successful sportsman is 'pointless' as some seem to think. He is as talented and successful, in his chosen field, as a musician, an author, an actor etc. It's a form of entertainment, which people enjoy, so why is he less worthy of celebrity ? well, that turned into a bit of a rant. sorry. lol

Sorry Elaine - got to add something else:) As disinterested as I am in the Beckhams, I have to say that one of the few 'celebrities' who stirs me to irritation is Rebecca Loos. It actually make me quite Mary Whitehouse-ish to see someone get paid to appear on telly who is famous for sh*gging someone else's partner and selling her story! What's that all about? Her family must be so proud.

Im not saying that I actually like all the celebs mentioned, and I really do dislike this woman. <Vision of a pig comes to mind> I agree a person who has done something bad should not be allowed to wallow in any realm of glory in the spotlight. But the others dont warrent the title pointless. Even Jordan, despite of her once wild lifestyle sems to have changes somewhat. Ive given her a lot more respect since Ive seen what a great mum she is to her sick child. Elaine x

My take on this: 1. People who are famous for doing something are usually known as 'famous footballer' or 'lead singer' or 'charity campaigner' or 'model' or whatever. 2. The term 'celebrity' seems to cover those who aren't famous for anything other than being famous - because they have had sex with someone else who is famous or at least well-known, or because they've appeared on some reality tv show demonstrating their lack of social skill or suchlike. 3. Posh was in a successful girl group, but as her solo career isn't as successful, is now better known as wife of David Beckham. If she were not married to him, I think she would have sunk back into obscurity. 4. David Beckham is a not-bad footballer. 5. PoshnBecks is a well-known 'brand' and presumably sells lots of things, and makes money and contributes to the economy. 6. Therefore PoshnBecks are not 'pointless'. 7. But as there seems to be a need for celebrities generally - to appear on chat shows, do ads, open supermarkets and appear on front pages of magazines, then celebrities can't be said to be pointless. But I think watching them or reading about them is pointless. I've got better things to do with my time. nell

A celebrity is simply 'one who is widely known'. So, who turns these people into celebrities? The press, the public or a good marketing machine. Celebrity is something that a person cannot bring about for themselves, so 'pointless' is simply a matter of perspective. There must be plenty of people who enjoy reading/hearing about the escapades of others to warrant the press giving 'pointless' people such an airing and making them so widely known. I imagine that if you asked another group of people who is 'pointless' you'd get a different set of 'celebrities'. As for 'earning' anything, who gives the celebrities the money that others are so quick to tell them how to spend?
