can you solve this puzzle with the addition of one line? 10 10 11 = 10.50

Zoe

Zoe Report 2 Mar 2006 12:20

put one of these '/' through the equals sign so it reads (in algebra speak) 101011 'is not equal to' 10.5

Well done Zoe - hadn't thought of that. Do you think that is the only answer? Penny

Zoe Report 2 Mar 2006 12:24

erm - its the one thast sprang immediately to mind. otherwise you nee dto be looking at subtraction or division - and there's nothing that looks obvious that I can see

Would that not be 10.33 recurring and not 10.5 Gloria

Zoe

Zoe Report 2 Mar 2006 13:07

Jess - I can't remember there being simble for mean, median and mode it's none of them tho mean = 10.33333 (recurring) median = 10 mode = 10

Maybe it's binary. Binary 10101 is 21 in arabic numerals Binary 1 is 2 in arabic CORRECTION: see below, it's 1 Put a slash between the last two digits of 101011 to represent 'divide by' So 10101/1 =10.5 Or, in arabic 21 divided by 2 = 10.5 UPDATE: not quite right ! For that to work the original number would be 1010110, not 101011

Fred (“\(*-*)/”) Report 2 Mar 2006 13:47

binary ? isn't binary 1 in the rightmost position equal to decimal 1 10101 = 21 ( 1*16) + (0*8) + (1*4) + (0*2) + (1*1) 1 = 1 (1*1) 10 = 2 (1*2) + (0*1) a rethink is needed http://www.geocities(.)com/binary_converter/

BrianW

BrianW Report 2 Mar 2006 13:58

Sorry Brian Knew 10 =2 because of a tshirt i saw it says 'There are 10 types of people in the world: Those that understand binary, and those that don't!'
