Diana, so sorry to hear about your father. My mother died last November and I can remember how we all felt then. She and my father had Abide With Me, its very moving.

My dad wanted ''Eternal Father Strong to Save'' because of his links with the Navy A friend died in her 50's she had this one I love the tune (as well as the words) Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, Whose trust, ever child-like, no cares could destroy, Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, Be there at our labours, and give us, we pray, Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, Your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day. Nice words Strump but he was deaf and the congregation will be 90% deaf so don't want to insult them with 'let me hear' in the words!! xx

Abide with Me The Lord's My Shepherd ................................................... Jerusalem Written by William Blake And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green And was the holy lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen And did the countenance divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills And was Jerusalem builded there Among those dark Satanic mills Bring me my bow (my bow) of burning gold Bring me my arrows of desire Bring me my spears o'clouds unfold Bring me my chariot of fire I will not cease from mental fight Nor shall my (my) sword sleep in hand 'Til we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land 'Til we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land

Lovly words that may help: Oh love that will not let me go I rest my weary soul in Thee I give Thee back the life I owe That in Thine ocean depths its flow May richer, fuller be Oh joy that seekest me through pain I cannot close my heart to thee I trace the rainbow through the rain And feel the promise is not vain That morn shall tearless be Oh cross that liftest up my head I dare not ask to fly from thee I lay in dust, life's glory dead And from the ground there blossoms red Life that shall endless be Derek

If you have no personal preference, how about The Lord's my Shepherd? Probably his peers would know that, and younger people, too. Thinking of you, Joy

My sympathies in your loss........hope you find comfort. May I suggest......... 'The King of Love my Shepherd is' It's a version of the 23rd psalm, but with a more melodic tune. If you google funeral hymns, you can listen to it online............ I want Jerusalem at mine......... Reg

Diana, If you google merryleachurch and go to the website, there are lots of suggestions of suitable music. if you then google a title, you can see the words and often hear the tune too. A personal favourite of mine is the Peace hymn: 1. Make me a channel of your peace: Where there is hatred, let me bring you love; Where there is injury, your healing pow'r, And where there's doubt, true faith in you. 2. Make me a channel of your peace: Where there's despair in life let me bring hope; Where there is darkness, - only light, And where there's sadness, ever joy. 3. O Spirit, grant that I may never seek So much to be consolded as to console, To be understood as to understand, To be loved as to love with all my soul - . 4. Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, In giving to all that we receive, And in dying that we're born to eternal life. Hope this may help you in your decision. Jay

I also like ''How Great Thou Art'' another friend had Lord of the Dance (its an old Shaker hymn) because she said she didn't want anyone to feel miserable. She went out to ''Macavity'' from the musical CATS - which did make us all smile.

Sorry to hear of your loss pink. Abide With Me is great for the football supporter, (FA cup hymn) but my personal favourite would be Jerusalem. Hope it all goes ok. xx

For my grandparents we had: On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross Prayer of St. Francis (Make me a channel of your peace) Cwm Rhondda (Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,) The Lord’s my Shepherd I know we had 3 hymns for each of them but I can't remember the others just now. This site has quite a few hymes http://www.hymns.me.uk/funeral-hymns.htm Follow your heart and you can't go wrong. (((xxx)))
